    Is artificial intelligence going to wipe out humanity? Could AI cause human extinction within the next ten years? Are we living through the beginning of a global collapse, or are our minds being asked to process so many real and possible threats at once that the future itself has begun to feel like an emergency? In Mailbag XLI of The Observable Unknown, Dr. Juan Carlos Rey responds to listener Sarah F., who writes that she is “scared to death” by what she sees happening in the world. She’s worried about artificial intelligence. The economy. Natural disasters. Political and social frustration. The possibility that AI could eventually destroy humanity. And beneath all of it is a more personal question: How do you keep your common sense when everything arriving through the screen seems to say that the world is coming apart? The episode begins with the question Sarah most needs answered: No, there is currently no established scientific finding that AI will wipe out humanity within ten years. Researchers do take catastrophic AI risk seriously, but that is very different from having a reliable extinction timetable. The 2026 International AI Safety Report describes wide disagreement among researchers about future loss-of-control scenarios. Some experts believe sufficiently capable future AI systems could create catastrophic or even existential risks. Others judge those scenarios far less plausible. That difference is central to this episode: “AI extinction is a risk researchers are studying” is not the same statement as “humanity has ten years left.” Will AI Cause Human Extinction? There is a serious scientific and policy discussion about AI existential risk. Researchers study whether future AI systems could become capable enough to evade human oversight, pursue long-term goals, conceal behavior, resist shutdown, gain access to consequential systems, or otherwise operate beyond meaningful human control. Those are legitimate research questions. They should not be trivialized. But neither should uncertainty be converted into prophecy. The 2026 International AI Safety Report says current AI systems lack the capabilities necessary for the kind of loss-of-control scenario associated with existential catastrophe, while also noting that relevant capabilities are advancing and deserve continued monitoring and safety work. So when someone says: “AI is going to kill everyone in ten years,” the appropriate question isn’t simply: “Could something terrible happen?” It is: What evidence supports that particular probability and that particular timetable? Possibility is not probability. Concern is not prediction. Prediction is not inevitability. And uncertainty is not a countdown clock. AI Risk Versus AI Doom The episode draws a sharp distinction between taking AI risk seriously and living psychologically as though the worst possible AI scenario has already been decided. Artificial intelligence can create genuine risks. These events may occur in completely different places, involve different causes, and unfold across very different timelines. But the nervous system receives them through the same screen. The world begins to feel less like a planet containing billions of lives and countless simultaneous conditions and more like one room in which everything is going wrong at once. Doomscrolling and the Nervous System This is one reason doomscrolling can become psychologically corrosive. The problem isn’t simply exposure to bad news. Some bad news is important. The deeper problem is the destruction of distance, scale, probability, and time. Something happening somewhere becomes emotionally immediate. Something that might happen later begins feeling present. A projection begins feeling like an event. A possibility begins feeling probable. A probability begins feeling inevitable. And eventually the body is responding not only to what has happened but to thousands of things that could happen. That is an enormous burden to place on a nervous system built to respond to much smaller fields of immediate danger. Present, Plausible, Predicted The episode offers a simple framework for recovering proportion: Present. Plausible. Predicted. A present threat is occurring now. A plausible threat could occur and has enough supporting evidence to deserve preparation. A predicted threat is a forecast, scenario, projection, or argument about something that may happen in the future. These categories aren’t interchangeable. If your house is burning, act. If wildfire danger is approaching your community, prepare. If someone online announces that civilization will inevitably disappear in ten years, investigate before allowing the claim to occupy your nervous system as though the event has already begun. The governing principle is: A possible future is not automatically a present emergency. Catastrophic Thinking and Future Anxiety Catastrophic thinking performs a peculiar psychological trick. It makes the nervous system experience a possible event before the event exists. A person can spend years emotionally inhabiting: The recession that might come. The war that might expand. The disease they might develop. The climate catastrophe that might occur. The AI takeover that might happen. The relationship that might end. The job they might lose. The mind begins treating imagined futures as current environments. And even when the feared event never arrives, the years spent living inside it are still gone. That doesn’t mean people should ignore future risk. It means preparation and pre-suffering are not the same thing. Is the Economy Really Collapsing? Sarah also describes the economy as “falling apart.” Economic hardship can be completely real at the household level even when national statistics don’t describe economic collapse. Housing costs, debt, food prices, job insecurity, medical expenses, stagnant opportunities, or personal unemployment can create genuine financial distress. But national collapse is a larger claim. As of the latest available U.S. figures, real GDP increased at a 1.5% annual rate during the second quarter of 2026. In August 2026, unemployment was 4.1%, with nonfarm payroll employment increasing by 162,000. Those statistics don’t mean everyone is prospering. They do mean that “the economy is collapsing” is not a precise description of the current national data. This is another example of the distinction between: “I am under economic pressure.” and “The entire economic system is collapsing.” The first may be painfully true. The second requires separate evidence. Climate Anxiety and Natural Disasters Sarah’s concern about natural disasters also deserves care rather than dismissal. Climate risk is real. The World Meteorological Organization’s 2026 update projects that global temperatures are likely to remain at or near record levels through the coming years. It estimates an 86% chance that at least one year between 2026 and 2030 will surpass 2024 as the warmest year on record, with continuing consequences for climate-related hazards. That is serious. But serious information still needs context. Climate risk does not require spending every hour psychologically positioned inside every flood, fire, hurricane, drought, and heat wave occurring anywhere on Earth. Awareness should produce informed behavior. It should not require permanent neurological occupation. The Difference Between Information and Occupation One of the deeper themes of this Mailbag is that information can cross a threshold and become occupation. You begin trying to remain informed. Then every alert feels urgent. Every projection feels personal. Every disaster feels nearby. Every expert disagreement feels like evidence that nobody knows anything. Every uncertainty becomes another reason to keep searching. The search creates more fear. The fear creates more searching. And before long, information has stopped serving judgment. Judgment is serving information. That is the moment to change the dose. How to Stop Doomscrolling Without Becoming Uninformed The episode proposes a practical experiment.     What decides what you notice before you decide what to do? Why can two people experience the same conversation, walk away with completely different memories, and both feel certain they saw what mattered? Why does one critical sentence eclipse ten compliments? Why can one worried thought dominate an otherwise ordinary morning? And how much of what we call choice has already been shaped by what attention allowed into consideration? In Interlude LXXXVIII of The Observable Unknown, Dr. Juan Carlos Rey continues the arc Agency and the Human Will by moving one step upstream from decision-making. Before we choose an action, something has already selected what receives mental priority. That leads to the central insight of the episode: Your life isn’t made only from what happens to you. It’s made from what repeatedly earns your attention. Drawing on psychologist and philosopher William James and cognitive neuroscientist Michael Posner, this episode explores attention, selective attention, perception, attentional bias, executive control, awareness, anxiety, focus, cognitive selection, decision-making, and human agency. William James and the Psychology of Attention In The Principles of Psychology, William James offered one of the most memorable descriptions of attention: “My experience is what I agree to attend to.” The statement contains a profound problem. Human beings are surrounded by more information than consciousness can treat equally. Sound. Movement. Memory. Physical sensation. Language. Expectation. Threat. Desire. Faces. Objects. Internal thoughts. Something must be selected. Something must remain background. Attention helps determine which parts of reality become psychologically prominent. This means two people can occupy the same room while inhabiting very different experienced worlds. One remembers the criticism. Another remembers the encouragement. One notices who failed to acknowledge them. Another notices who smiled. One detects danger. Another sees possibility. The external situation may be shared. The attended world isn’t. Attention Comes Before Choice We often imagine decision-making in a simple sequence: Something happens. We evaluate it. Then we choose what to do. But there’s another stage hiding between event and choice. Something happens. Attention edits. Then evaluation begins. This matters because we can’t deliberately choose among possibilities that never entered consideration. A decision can feel completely rational while still being constructed from a very narrow sample of reality. Before asking: “Why did I choose this?” it may be useful to ask: “What did I notice before I chose?” And then: “What didn’t enter the decision at all?” Michael Posner and the Science of Attention The episode then turns to the work of Michael Posner, whose research helped make attention experimentally measurable. Posner’s work demonstrated that attention can shift toward expected information even before the eyes physically move toward it. A cue can prepare the mind for something likely to appear in a particular location. When the expectation proves accurate, responses may become faster. Most of the messages are ordinary. One contains an unexpected expense. Which message dominates the morning? Or imagine worrying that your partner is becoming distant. They spend twenty minutes speaking warmly to you. Then they become distracted for thirty seconds. Which part does your mind replay? The thirty seconds. The issue isn’t necessarily that your perception is false. Your partner really may have become distracted. The expense really exists. The question is why one signal acquires disproportionate psychological weight. Attention doesn’t need to invent reality to distort proportion. It only has to keep returning to one part of it. What Are You Prepared to Notice? Attention doesn’t merely ask: What happened? It can also reflect: What am I prepared to detect? Someone who fears betrayal may become exceptionally sensitive to ambiguous signals of rejection. An anxious employee may detect tiny changes in a supervisor’s tone. Someone raised around unpredictable conflict may become highly sensitive to silence, posture, facial expression, or changes in pace. A person preoccupied with social status may immediately notice who possesses authority. A person deeply in love may find one particular face inside a crowded room almost instantly. The signal may be real. The deeper question is why that signal became foreground while everything else became scenery. Attention Can Train the Reality You Experience What you repeatedly attend to becomes easier to detect. What becomes easier to detect may begin appearing everywhere. And what appears everywhere can eventually feel like the structure of reality itself. That creates a powerful feedback loop. A person constantly scanning for disrespect may become extremely good at finding possible disrespect. A person searching constantly for danger may experience the world as increasingly dangerous. A person monitoring rejection may begin detecting rejection in increasingly ambiguous situations. The same process can become useful. A musician hears distinctions others miss. A physician notices symptoms that an untrained observer might ignore. An experienced teacher detects the moment a student stops understanding. A parent notices a tiny behavioral change that signals something important. Expertise often involves educated attention. Attention itself isn’t the problem. The deeper question is: Who educated yours? Who Trained Your Attention? Your family may have trained it. Your profession may have trained it. Fear may have trained it. Ambition may have trained it. A former relationship may have trained it. A teacher may have trained it. Trauma may have trained it. Advertising may have trained it. Social media may be training it. Algorithms may be competing to train it right now. This becomes especially important in an environment where attention has economic value. Digital systems continually compete for what you notice next. Urgency. Outrage. Novelty. Threat. Status. Conflict. Uncertainty. All can become extremely effective at capturing attention. The question isn’t merely: “What am I looking at?” It’s: “What is repeatedly teaching me where to look?” Attention and Human Agency This is why attention belongs inside an arc about agency and free will. The previous Interlude asked: Am I choosing this, or am I merely the place where this keeps happening? Attention asks an earlier question: Before I chose, what had already been selected for me? That distinction changes how we think about freedom. Agency doesn’t begin only when someone performs an action. It may begin when they notice how their field of consideration is being constructed. If the only information entering conscious consideration supports one conclusion, the resulting choice may feel inevitable. Increasing agency may require widening the field. Temporal Architecture™ and Attention Dr. Rey also connects attention to Temporal Architecture™ and one of its recurring principles: Different states make different decisions. But different states also create different attentional worlds. Exhaustion can make certain signals louder. Threat can narrow focus. Urgency privileges what feels immediate. Anxiety can increase attention toward possible danger. A calmer state may allow information into consideration that fear pushed into the background. This means one of the wisest things a person can do before making an important decision may not be gathering more information. It may be changing the state of the person who’s gathering it. Sleep. Walk. Wait. Step away. Ask another person what they noticed. Read the message again tomorrow. Deliberately search for evidence that contradicts the interpretation already dominating attention. The goal isn’t to eliminate perspective. It’s to discover when perspective has quietly become a tunnel. The Illusion of Attentional Reality Attention can create a convincing illusion: What I keep seeing must be all there is. But what repeatedly enters awareness isn’t necessarily the complete environment. It’s what repeatedly wins selection. That distinction can matter in relationships, work, politics, anxiety, social media use, leadership, personal development, and ordinary daily judgment. The person who continually sees danger may need to ask what their attention has stopped registering. The person continually seeing incompetence in an employee may need to ask what evidence of competence has become psychologically quiet. The person convinced a relationship is failing may need to ask what ordinary signs of connection no longer feel significant enough to notice. Attention determines neither truth nor falsehood by itself. It determines what gets examined first. And first often has enormous power. Learning to Notice Differently Perhaps freedom begins earlier than choice. Not merely: Choosing differently. But: Learning to notice differently. That doesn’t mean forcing optimism. It doesn’t mean ignoring danger.

But none of those things automatically tells you what you must do next. This sounds simple until your nervous system has learned a different rule. Your partner becomes quiet, and you immediately start reviewing the day. Your parent sounds disappointed, and suddenly a decision you felt good about becomes morally suspicious. A colleague seems irritated, and you spend hours preparing a defense against something they haven’t said. Someone dislikes your boundary, and their unhappiness enters your body as evidence that the boundary was wrong. At that point, you’re no longer merely noticing another person’s emotional weather. You’re living inside it. Emotional Over-Responsibility One reason this pattern can be difficult to recognize is that it often looks admirable from the outside. It can resemble: Generosity. Loyalty. Patience. Professionalism. Spiritual service. Parental devotion. Romantic commitment. Sensitivity. Maturity. Strength. A person may appear exceptionally capable while their inner life becomes increasingly crowded. Other people remain psychologically present long after leaving the room. Their possible reactions influence decisions they know nothing about. Their preferences acquire votes in conversations they were never invited into. Sometimes even the dead retain emotional authority. A deceased parent can still disapprove. A former partner can still seem capable of withholding affection. A teacher from decades ago can still pronounce judgment. Distance doesn’t necessarily end an old obedience. Emotional Conscription The book names one version of this process Emotional Conscription. The term doesn’t describe ordinary empathy. It isn’t a diagnosis. Human beings naturally affect one another. We comfort each other. We regulate through voice, presence, attachment, reassurance, touch, and shared meaning. Relationships require responsiveness. Emotional Conscription names something more specific: the point where emotional participation starts losing choice, reciprocity, or proportion. Their anxiety becomes your emergency. Their disappointment becomes your wrongdoing. Their anger becomes your command. Their relief becomes the condition under which you’re permitted to rest. The book treats Emotional Conscription as a practical construct for recognizing a pattern, not as a clinical label. Borrowed Urgency Another concept in the book is Borrowed Urgency. Someone else feels anxious. Suddenly their time pressure enters your body. The message must be answered now. The disagreement must be resolved now. The problem must be fixed now. Or is saying that “fear itself can become a neurotransmitter” a poetic metaphor that crosses a scientific line? In Mailbag XL of The Observable Unknown, Dr. Juan Carlos Rey responds to listener Margaret R., who asks for clarification about a haunting phrase from an earlier Interlude: Is fear literally a neurotransmitter, or was that metaphorical language? The answer is clear. Fear isn’t a neurotransmitter.     How much of your life have you actually chosen? You didn’t choose your first language. You didn’t choose the family into which you were born. You didn’t choose your earliest beliefs, your first fears, the century that received you, or many of the experiences that taught your nervous system what danger feels like. Yet, eventually, the world begins asking what you chose. So where does personal responsibility begin inside a human being shaped by forces they never selected? In Interlude LXXXVII of The Observable Unknown, Dr. Juan Carlos Rey begins a new arc, Agency and the Human Will, by examining one of philosophy and psychology’s oldest questions: What does it mean to choose when every chooser has already been shaped? Drawing on the work of psychologist Albert Bandura and philosopher Harry Frankfurt, this episode explores free will, human agency, desire, habit, responsibility, environmental influence, self-regulation, decision-making, and the possibility of changing what happens next without pretending that human beings somehow exist outside cause and circumstance. The governing idea is simple: You don’t have to have chosen what shaped you to choose what happens next. What Is Human Agency? Discussions of free will often become trapped between two extremes. Either human beings are completely free... or every thought, desire, emotion, and action is caused by something that came before it. But those possibilities may not exhaust the problem. You can be shaped by an environment while also learning to alter the environment that will shape you next. That’s where Albert Bandura becomes especially useful. Bandura’s work on human agency rejected a picture of people as passive products of whatever surrounds them. Human beings are affected by environments, but they can also select environments, avoid them, modify them, interpret them, and create new conditions through their own behavior. That creates a loop: The environment acts upon the person. The person acts upon the environment. The changed environment then acts upon the person again. Agency doesn’t have to stand outside causation. Agency can enter the causal chain. You Didn’t Choose the First Reaction. What About the Next One? Imagine someone grows up in a household where raised voices reliably signal danger. Years later, another person raises their voice during an argument. The body may respond before conscious thought arrives. Muscles tighten. Attention narrows. Defensiveness appears. Maybe the person freezes. Maybe they attack. Maybe they apologize immediately even when they’ve done nothing wrong. That first response may carry years of learning behind it. But recognizing where a response came from can change the relationship someone has with it. The person may eventually notice: “My body believes something old is happening.” And then another possibility appears. They might slow the conversation. Leave the room. Ask for time. Refuse to repeat a familiar response. Return later in a different state. The past still explains the alarm. It no longer has to dictate the entire conversation. That’s one form of agency. Not: Nothing caused me. But: Something caused this, and now I have a relationship to the cause. Harry Frankfurt: Do You Want What You Want? Philosopher Harry Frankfurt offers another route into the problem of free will. Human beings don’t merely have desires. We can sometimes take a position toward our own desires. You can want something while also wishing you didn’t want it. You can feel an impulse to say something cruel while knowing you don’t want cruelty to define your behavior. You can crave approval while disliking how much authority approval has acquired over your decisions. You can desire the cigarette while also wanting to become someone who no longer wants cigarettes. This creates an extraordinary second question. Not simply: What do I want? But: Which of my wants deserves authority? That distinction matters because desire and endorsement aren’t identical. An impulse can occur without becoming a command. An emotion can arrive without becoming an identity. A thought can appear without being adopted as a value. And a desire can speak without receiving the final vote. Am I Choosing This, or Is This Simply Where the Pattern Keeps Happening? This becomes the recurring question of the new arc: Am I choosing this, or am I merely the place where this keeps happening? Patterns have a peculiar way of becoming identities. “I’m impatient.” “I’m jealous.” “I’m terrible with money.” “I always choose the wrong person.” “I shut down when I’m criticized.” “I ruin relationships.” “I can’t control myself around food.” “I’ve never been disciplined.” Listen closely to what happens. A repeated behavior gradually becomes a statement about what someone is. The pattern stops being something the person does. It becomes the person. And once a pattern becomes identity, changing it can begin to feel strangely unnatural. But history isn’t the same thing as destiny. An explanation isn’t a prophecy. Knowing why a behavior developed doesn’t mean the behavior has to keep receiving authority forever. Agency Isn’t Omnipotence This episode also places an important boundary around the idea of personal choice. Agency doesn’t mean that human beings can simply choose anything. You can’t decide not to require sleep. You can’t vote exhaustion out of existence. You can’t think your way out of every biological limitation, economic constraint, trauma response, social condition, or relationship. Human agency exists inside limits. Sometimes the available choice is enormous. Sometimes it’s extremely narrow. But narrow isn’t the same thing as nonexistent. This distinction protects agency from becoming another form of blame. The point isn’t: “You could have chosen anything.” The better question is: “What range of choice was actually available here, and can that range be increased?” Temporal Architecture™ and the Conditions of Choice Dr. Rey connects this question to Temporal Architecture™. One of its recurring principles is: Different states make different decisions. The exhausted version of you doesn’t necessarily possess the same decision-making range as the rested version. The frightened version of you may interpret uncertainty differently from the secure version. Someone who has recovered may regain patience, perspective, and behavioral range. This means agency isn’t only about trying to make better decisions inside whatever conditions happen to exist. Sometimes agency means altering the conditions under which the decision will be made. Sleep before deciding. Leave the room before answering. Create distance between impulse and access. Ask for more information. Move the meeting. Delay the purchase. Remove the temptation. Write the commitment down. Ask someone else to hold you to what mattered before the difficult moment arrived. Sometimes the most consequential choice happens before the moment we normally call the choice. Why Environment Matters to Free Will This has practical consequences for self-control, productivity, relationships, addiction, workplace behavior, leadership, habits, and everyday decision-making. People often treat difficult behavior as a test of character. But behavior also occurs inside an arrangement. What is within reach? What happens automatically? What requires effort? What happens when someone is tired? What does the environment continually cue? Who is present? How much time exists before action is required? What happens immediately afterward? A person who wants to change may sometimes gain more by changing the structure around a decision than by repeatedly demanding greater willpower from the same exhausted self. That doesn’t eliminate responsibility. It makes responsibility more practical. Instead of asking only: “Why can’t I control myself?” someone can ask: “Why do I keep putting this decision in the hands of the version of me least prepared to make it?” Habit, Impulse, Choice, and Responsibility Interlude LXXXVII: Agency also establishes the questions that will guide the rest of the arc. Attention. Habit. Impulse. Delay. Decision. Commitment. Regret. Responsibility. Authorship. Direction. Freedom. Each asks a different version of one underlying problem: How much authorship can a shaped creature acquire over what shaping happens next? Attention determines what becomes available to thought. Habit allows yesterday’s repetitions to enter today with less conscious negotiation. Impulse produces desires before reflection catches up. Delay changes how the future competes with the present. Commitment allows one version of the self to constrain another. Regret reopens imagined alternatives. Responsibility asks what explanation changes about accountability. Authorship asks how people interpret lives they didn’t completely design. Freedom asks how much of that process can meaningfully become ours. Is Complete Freedom Even the Right Goal? Who forms an alliance, marriage, friendship, allegiance, dependency, or separation? Visibility: Revealing and Hiding. What becomes known? What remains concealed? A secret can exist unchanged for decades until knowledge of it rearranges every relationship around it. Valence: Rising and Falling. Who gains or loses honor, trust, status, desirability, legitimacy, or moral standing? Transfer: Giving and Taking. What changes hands? Money, authority, knowledge, names, inheritance, wounds, objects, responsibility, or power. Stability: Securing and Breaking. What becomes dependable, protected, promised, threatened, fractured, or destroyed? Position: Replacing and Restoring. Who occupies whose place? Who returns? Who is displaced? What role, title, identity, or authority gets restored? Polarity: Reversing and Returning. When does ally become enemy, student become teacher, victim become aggressor, or one role invert into another? Then comes the pattern that stretches across time: Repeating and breaking the cycle. Sometimes the deepest story isn’t a single change. It’s the recognition that the same change has happened again and again until someone finally refuses to repeat it. The book’s Story Relation Map formalizes these axes and applies them to scenes, character, and larger narrative structures. A love story may involve visibility, joining, belonging, status, risk, and the possibility of separation. A homecoming may involve physical return, but the deeper story concerns whether someone can still belong to the world they left. This allows Narrative Architecture to ask a more precise question than: “What kind of plot is this?” It asks: Which relationships are changing, in what direction, and what does the change cost? The framework doesn’t argue that culturally distinct stories are secretly identical. Its purpose is careful comparison, not flattening difference. The book explicitly warns against treating works from different languages, religious traditions, eras, and communities as interchangeable simply because they contain comparable relational movements. A Practical Tool for Writers and Filmmakers For writers, screenwriters, playwrights, directors, editors, and storytellers, the framework becomes immediately practical. When a scene feels flat, the usual question is: “What should happen next?” Narrative Architecture suggests another: What relationship is different when this scene ends? Characters can argue for ten pages while producing no meaningful change. Another scene can contain one sentence and permanently alter a family. That distinction helps reveal the difference between activity and story. The book applies the method to scene construction by examining the relational consequences produced across sequences. It argues that a chase should alter more than physical distance, a fight should change more than bodily condition, and information should change more than what a character knows. As the book puts it: Action becomes story when relation pays the bill. A scene can reveal a secret. Lower someone’s status. Create suspicion. Break a bond. Transfer authority. Change who belongs. Make reconciliation impossible. Once those outcomes are mapped, repetition and missing structural support become much easier to see. Character Arcs Are Relational Arcs This approach also changes how we think about character development. A character doesn’t have to become “better” to have an arc. Their relationship to self may change. Their relationship to family may change. They may lose membership in a group. Their duty may become intolerable. Their world of value may collapse. Someone may finish a story outwardly unchanged while becoming radically different in relation to power, loyalty, memory, love, or identity. The appendix maps character through relationships to self, intimate bonds, group belonging, position and duty, and the world of value, making character development less dependent on vague claims that someone has simply “grown.” Why Suspense Works Suspense also becomes relational. The audience may know something a character doesn’t. A secret may threaten a marriage. A hidden weapon may alter who possesses agency before it’s ever used. Someone’s apparent ally may already belong to another side. The tension isn’t merely: “What will happen?” It can be: Which relationship is about to become something else? That distinction helps explain why suspense can exist in a quiet room with no visible action. The audience understands that the relational structure is unstable. Something is about to be revealed, broken, transferred, reversed, or taken away. Narrative Architecture Beyond Fiction The Secret Scaffolding of Story eventually moves beyond novels and films because the same questions appear throughout human culture. Families tell stories about who they are. Religions tell stories of creation, fall, covenant, sacrifice, exile, redemption, and restoration. Political movements tell stories about belonging, displacement, legitimacy, betrayal, and return. Rituals publicly perform relationships. Civilizations preserve stories because relations must survive individual lifetimes. The book devotes its later chapters to identity, ritual, religion, myth, politics, and civilizational storytelling. A family saying, “We don’t talk about that,” is already organizing visibility. A nation saying, “This land belongs to us,” is organizing boundary. A ruler claiming succession is making a statement about position. A marriage ceremony changes bond and status. An initiation changes belonging. An apology may attempt restoration. A revolution can be understood as a conflict over who possesses authority and whether an existing arrangement can continue. Story isn’t merely entertainment. Stories tell people who belongs, who owes, who deserves, who remembers, who rules, and what must change. Narrative Literacy as Moral Literacy That realization gives the theory an ethical dimension. Once you become accustomed to asking what changed, further questions follow. Who gained? Who lost? Who was welcomed? Who was expelled? Who became visible? Who was concealed? What was given? What was taken? What broke? Who was restored? And when the official ending arrives, what remains unpaid?     Mailbag XXXIX: When Everything Starts Looking Like a Conspiracy | Misinformation, UAPs, COVID, Neuralink, Human Trafficking, and Critical Thinking

    What happens when so many extraordinary claims begin arriving at once that you can no longer tell what deserves belief, what deserves investigation, and what deserves dismissal? Was COVID deliberately engineered? Are birds being replaced by surveillance drones? Are governments secretly controlled by hidden oligarchic networks? Are ICE detainees being used for Neuralink experiments? Are earthquakes and extreme weather being created as weapons? Is human trafficking occurring on the enormous scale sometimes claimed online? Do UAP videos prove extraterrestrials are already here? And if even a fraction of those things might be true, is constantly monitoring them actually the rational thing to do? In Mailbag XXXIX of The Observable Unknown, Dr. Juan Carlos Rey responds to Joan H., an intelligent and increasingly overwhelmed listener who feels as though her ability to distinguish reality from speculation is beginning to slip. Joan isn’t asking whether strange things happen. She’s asking a much harder question: How do you remain open-minded without becoming vulnerable to every extraordinary claim that crosses your screen? The answer begins with a distinction that sits at the heart of this episode: Intelligence and epistemic discipline aren’t the same thing. A highly intelligent person can build a sophisticated explanation from unreliable premises. The mind’s ability to connect dots doesn’t guarantee that the dots belong to the same picture. When Possibility Starts Feeling Like Probability Modern information environments create a peculiar problem. Verified facts. Legitimate unanswered questions. Technically possible scenarios. Unsupported allegations. Misleading statistics. Rumors. Fabrications. They can all arrive through the same device. They use the same fonts. They appear in the same feeds. They may be delivered with identical confidence. After enough exposure, the mind can begin losing an essential distinction: Possible doesn’t mean probable. And probable doesn’t mean proven. This Mailbag explores what happens when uncertainty itself becomes psychologically threatening. A question remains unanswered. Someone offers an explanation. The explanation creates three more mysteries. Those mysteries lead to another theory. Soon the listener isn’t becoming better informed. They’re becoming what Dr. Rey calls epistemically unfinished. Every answer generates another threat. Every missing detail becomes evidence of deeper concealment. And uncertainty begins to feel less like a normal feature of knowledge and more like proof that someone is hiding something. COVID Origins: Uncertainty Isn’t Evidence for Every Theory The episode uses the continuing debate over the origins of COVID-19 as an example of how quickly uncertainty can be misused. There’s an enormous difference between saying: “A question hasn’t been completely resolved.” and saying: “My preferred explanation must therefore be true.” The inability to fully exclude one possibility doesn’t automatically support a much stronger allegation. These examples reveal another problem in conspiracy thinking. A claim can sound plausible because some of its individual components are real. Surveillance technology exists. Drones exist. Neural implants exist. Government detention exists. That doesn’t mean a story connecting all four has evidence behind it. Real ingredients don’t automatically produce a real conclusion. This episode encourages listeners to separate: What exists? from: What has actually been demonstrated to be happening? Those are radically different questions. Weather Modification, Earthquakes, and Technological Warfare Some conspiracy theories become persuasive because they begin with real science. Human activity can influence certain geological events. Weather modification has a genuine technological history. Governments have researched unconventional forms of warfare. But the existence of a technology doesn’t prove that a particular disaster was caused by it. This distinction matters. A person can move from: “Humans can influence natural systems” to: “This particular earthquake was deliberately produced” without noticing that the second claim requires an entirely new body of evidence. The episode offers a simple principle: Capability isn’t evidence of use. Something being technologically conceivable doesn’t establish that it explains the event currently being discussed. UAPs, UFOs, and Extraterrestrial Claims The episode also addresses UAPs, UFO videos, the Tic Tac incident, extraterrestrial intelligence, and unexplained aerial phenomena. Some observations remain unresolved. But unresolved doesn’t mean extraterrestrial. A strange image can remain strange. An unidentified object can remain unidentified. Missing information doesn’t automatically become evidence of alien technology. Dr. Rey draws a sharp distinction: “Unexplained” isn’t a synonym for “extraterrestrial.” That doesn’t require dismissing the subject. It requires preserving the question until the evidence justifies a stronger answer. Curiosity remains possible without premature certainty. Human Trafficking and Frightening Statistics Joan also asks about human trafficking and why the numbers she encounters can sound unimaginably large. Human trafficking is real and serious. But the way statistics are presented can radically change what listeners think a number means. A statistic might represent: Detected victims. Hotline contacts. Police reports. Investigations. Estimated prevalence. Modeled prevalence. Known cases. Potential cases. Those categories aren’t interchangeable. A frightening number can become even more frightening when people unknowingly change its meaning while repeating it. Dr. Rey offers a rule worth carrying far beyond trafficking statistics: Never let a frightening number become more precise in your imagination than it was in the source. Before reacting to a number, ask: What exactly was counted? Who counted it? Over what period? In which population? Does the number describe confirmed cases, reports, estimates, or projections? Statistics aren’t automatically deceptive. But statistics stripped of definitions can become extraordinarily misleading. Why Conspiracy Theories Can Feel So Satisfying The episode also examines research into the psychology of conspiracy belief. Conspiracy explanations can become attractive when people are trying to restore understanding, security, control, or social meaning during periods of uncertainty. They offer something emotionally powerful: A story. There’s an agent. There’s a motive. There’s a hidden plan. There’s someone responsible. Confusion becomes organized. But the explanation may create a trap. Rather than reducing uncertainty, it can require an ever-expanding conspiracy to explain every contradiction. The theory becomes difficult to falsify because missing evidence itself becomes evidence. No documents? They were destroyed. Contradictory witness? They were compromised. Independent investigation? Part of the cover-up. No predicted event occurs? The plan changed because people discovered it. A theory that can explain every possible outcome may feel extraordinarily powerful. But that creates a problem: If nothing can prove a theory wrong, very little can meaningfully prove it right. The Three-Box System for Evaluating Extraordinary Claims Dr. Rey offers Joan a practical method for managing frightening information. Put claims into one of three categories. Established Strong evidence exists across credible, independent sources. The claim can reasonably guide belief or action. Open Legitimate questions remain. Evidence may be incomplete, contested, or insufficient to support a firm conclusion. The appropriate response is neither belief nor dismissal. It’s: Keep the question open. Unsupported A specific allegation has been made, but the evidence offered isn’t strong enough to carry it. Here, one of the episode’s most important principles applies: You don’t have to disprove every unsupported claim you encounter. The person making the claim carries the burden of supporting it. That single distinction can dramatically change how someone navigates conspiracy content online. Three Questions That Can Protect Your Thinking When encountering an extraordinary claim, ask: What exactly is being claimed? Strip away emotional language and identify the precise proposition. Then ask: What evidence would I require before believing this? Decide before becoming emotionally invested. Finally: What evidence would make me change my mind? That final question is crucial. Because if the answer is: “Nothing could change my mind,” you may no longer be investigating. You may be defending a story. Accuracy Before Excitement One of the simplest lessons in misinformation research is also one of the most useful. Before asking: Is this shocking? Is this terrifying? Does this explain everything? Could this go viral? Does this confirm what I’ve suspected? Ask: Is this true? That small shift toward accuracy can interrupt the emotional momentum that makes sensational information so powerful.
