Westminster Talking the Text Podcast for Sunday, February 8, 2026 | Isaiah 58:1-12 and Matthew 5:13-20 | with Donovan Drake, Guy D. Griffith, Ashley Higgins, Stephanie Boaz, Will Wellman, and Sophie Maness Isaiah 58:1-12 The fast that God chooses  58:1Shout out; do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their rebellion, to the house of Jacob their sins. 58:2Yet day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments; they want God on their side. 58:3"Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?" Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day and oppress all your workers. 58:4You fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high. 58:5Is such the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? 58:6Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? 58:7Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them and not to hide yourself from your own kin? 58:8Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. 58:9aThen you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, "Here I am." 58:9bIf you remove the yoke from among you, the pointing of the finger, the speaking of evil, 58:10if you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness and your gloom be like the noonday. 58:11The LORD will guide you continually and satisfy your needs in parched places and make your bones strong, and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water whose waters never fail. 58:12Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in. Matthew 5:13-20 The teaching of Christ: salt and light  5:13"You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything but is thrown out and trampled under foot. 5:14"You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. 5:15People do not light a lamp put it under the bushel basket; rather they put it on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 5:16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. 5:17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. 5:18For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. 5:19Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 5:20For I Discover more about the welcoming community at Westminster Presbyterian Church! Westminster Talking the Text Podcast for Sunday, February 1, 2026 | Micah 6:1-8 and Matthew 5:1-12 | with Donovan Drake, Guy D. Griffith, Ashley Higgins, Stephanie Boaz, & Will Wellman Micah 6:1-8 The offering of justice, kindness, humility  6:1Hear what the LORD says: Rise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice. 6:2Hear, you mountains, the case of the LORD, and you enduring foundations of the earth, for the LORD has a case against his people, and he will contend with Israel. 6:3"O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me! 6:4For I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. 6:5O my people, remember now what King Balak of Moab devised, what Balaam son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the saving acts of the LORD." 6:6"With what shall I come before the LORD and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? 6:7Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?" 6:8He has told you, O mortal, what is good, and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God? Matthew 5:1-12 The teaching of Christ: Beatitudes  5:1When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 5:2And he began to speak and taught them, saying: 5:3"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 5:4"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5:5"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 5:6"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 5:7"Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. 5:8"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 5:9"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 5:10"Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 5:11"Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 5:12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Westminster Talking the Text Podcast for Sunday, January 25, 2026 | Isaiah 9:1-4 & Matthew 4:12-23  | with Donovan Drake, Guy D. Griffith, Ashley Higgins, Stephanie Boaz, & Will Wellman Isaiah 9:1-4 Light shines for those in darkness  9:1But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. 9:2The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness-on them light has shined. 9:3You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. 9:4For the yoke of their burden and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. Matthew 4:12-23 Christ revealed as a prophet  4:12Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. 4:13He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 4:14so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 4:15"Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the gentiles-- 4:16the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." 4:17From that time Jesus began to proclaim, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." 4:18As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea for they were fishers. 4:19And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fisher of people." 4:20Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 4:21As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. 4:22Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. 4:23Jesus went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people. Westminster Talking the Text Podcast for Sunday, January 18, 2026 | John 1: 23-42 | with Donovan Drake, Guy D. Griffith, Ashley Higgins, Stephanie Boaz, & Will Wellman John 1: 23-42 23He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’” as the prophet Isaiah said. 24Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. 25They asked him, “Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”26John answered them, “I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, 27the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.” 28This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing. 29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ 31I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.” 35The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, 36and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” 37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. 40One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). 42He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter). Discover more about the welcoming community at Westminster Presbyterian Church! Westminster Talking the Text Podcast for Sunday, January 11, 2026 | Third Sunday of Christmas & Holy Baptism | Isaiah 42:1-9 & Matthew 3:13-17 | with Donovan Drake, Guy D. Griffith, Ashley Higgins, & Stephanie Boaz Isaiah 42:1-9 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry out or lift up his voice or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth, and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness; I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. Matthew 3:13-17  Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now, for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw God's Spirit descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from the heavens said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." Discover more about the welcoming community at Westminster Presbyterian Church! Westminster Talking the Text Podcast for Sunday, January 4, 2026 | Second Sunday of Christmas| JOHN 1: 1-18 | with Donovan Drake, Guy D. Griffith, Ashley Higgins, & Stephanie Boaz JOHN 1: 1-18 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it. There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth. (John testified to him and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.'") From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is the only Son, himself God, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made him known. Discover more about the welcoming community at Westminster Presbyterian Church! Westminster Talking the Text Podcast for Sunday, December 28, 2025 | First Sunday of Christmas| Matthew 2:13-23 | with Donovan Drake, Guy D. Griffith, Ashley Higgins, & Stephanie Boaz Matthew 2:13-23 The slaughter of innocent children  Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, "Out of Egypt I have called my son." When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned from the magi. Then what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they are no more." When Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child's life are dead." Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. And after being warned in a dream, he went away to the district of Galilee. There he made his home in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, "He will be called a Nazarene.” Discover more about the welcoming community at Westminster Presbyterian Church! Westminster Talking the Text Podcast for Sunday, December 21, 2025 | Fourth Sunday of Advent | Matthew 1:18-25 | with Donovan Drake, Guy D. Griffith, Ashley Higgins, & Stephanie Boaz Matthew 1:18-25 Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be pregnant from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to divorce her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "Look, the virgin shall become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means, "God is with us." When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.
