Violent Off-Duty Incident Changed NYPD Cops Life

Jumped Off Duty: The Night That Changed Everything August 30, 2014. 4:35 in the morning. Off duty and running on no sleep after a full tour, Krute walks into a Bronx bodega to grab baby wipes for his infant daughter. His phone is dead in the car. No radio, no cuffs, no backup. And three men follow him to the back of the store. What happened over the next seven minutes changed the way he saw his training, his faith, and his life. Krute has lived several lives: a Thai-Chinese kid bullied in the South Bronx, a Marine who deployed to Al Anbar, an NYPD cop who spent two years on Impact in the busiest precinct in the city, a Buddhist monk walking barefoot through northern Thailand for alms, Army special operations, and a Portland cop elected union VP in the middle of 100+ days of riots. In this episode he breaks down what each chapter taught him, including the special operations selection he quit, only to learn the finish line was at the top of the very hill he walked away from. We also get real about what the job costs: moving across the country for a "dream house" and steady days, then coming home to an empty house. Falling in love with the image of being a father instead of being one. Making the badge your identity. And how he rebuilt, as a dad, a man of faith, and a career coach helping cops find their next chapter before they burn out. If you've ever wondered who you are without the uniform, this is the episode. WHAT WE COVER • The off-duty night that changed everything • Growing up Thai-Chinese in the South Bronx • Joining the Marines because his best friend did • Two years on Impact in the 4-4 • Why 90% of policing is verbal • East Coast vs. West Coast policing • Becoming a Buddhist monk in Thailand • Suffering, attachment, and Christianity • Quitting at the top of the hill • Leaving NYPD for Portland, then the George Floyd riots • Coming home to an empty house • "I fell in love with the image of being a father" • 3 steps to prepare to leave the job in 6 months • Why you should never job hunt when you hate your job CONNECT WITH KRUTE Instagram: @[handle] Website: eastcoastcareer.com 📲 Connect with Lenny: Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/purposeoverpension/ TikTok – https://www.tiktok.com/@purposeoverpension?_t=ZP-8yvXjeYqxSg&_r=1 Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/lenny.bradley.12/ Email: contact@purposeoverpension.com Purpose Over Pension is a podcast for law enforcement officers and first responders who want to build a life bigger than the job — faith, family, fitness, finances, and purpose. Demon Deliverance, Real Estate Investing and Policing In The Bronx

Ilya came to America from a Russian housing block where eight families shared one bathroom. He joined the NYPD, made felony collars as a rookie, and got punished for it. He was drinking before roll call, running a burner phone for the women, and gambling in Atlantic City on his RDOs. He requested a post in the 4-6 for the summer — the same post Officer Miosotis Familia was assassinated on the next night.   He retired at eight years. Built a real estate business. Made more than the chief of the department. Bought the Mercedes, the watches, the custom home in the Dominican Republic. And he says he has never felt emptier in his life.   Then his son fell into a coma. His marriage collapsed. His business partners took everything. And in the middle of the wreckage he heard a voice say: *"I allowed you to crash — but now I'm going to build you back up, and I'll be your foundation."*   Today he runs an international ministry and prays deliverance over people. In this conversation he talks about what he thinks we were really looking at on some of those EDP jobs — and he answers the guys who are already calling him crazy.   This one is for every cop who hit the pension and still felt like something was missing.   00:00 Retiring from the NYPD 00:20 Hitting rock bottom 00:57 Crying out to God 01:31 Demons and deliverance 01:48 Welcome to the podcast 02:24 Opening in prayer 03:28 From millionaire to faith 05:38 Growing up in Russia 07:50 Moving to America 10:18 Becoming an NYPD officer 11:09 From troublemaker to cop 13:54 Selling drugs and hustling 19:02 The Russian discipline 20:48 First years in the 52 23:02 A wild arrest 26:17 Getting in trouble for doing the job 28:26 Transfer to the 44 30:52 A close call with a gun 31:53 Domestic violence call 34:38 Justice system frustration 35:04 Recognizing God's protection 37:41 Mental and spiritual toll 39:55 Coping with sin 42:01 NYPD's dark culture 46:48 The need to be vulnerable 47:04 Getting married for the wrong reasons 48:01 Double life and gambling 53:00 Caught cheating 54:08 Psych evaluation 57:24 Rebuilding through boxing 01:01:41 Searching for a new path 01:04:22 I quit the NYPD 01:07:15 First real estate deals 01:10:25 My mentor's advice 01:12:59 Close call with death 01:14:32 The decision to retire 01:18:20 The golden handcuffs 01:21:34 Resisting the FDNY 01:23:01 The pride before the fall 01:25:53 Still feeling empty 01:27:36 Realizing God is real 01:29:01 Baby Christian signs 01:31:11 Moving to the Dominican Republic 01:33:40 My son's coma 01:36:30 God's voice in the storm 01:40:30 Falling back into sin 01:43:40 Caught red-handed 01:45:16 God's message: I allowed you to crash 01:46:46 Preparing for the prayer 01:48:48 Spiritual attack before breakthrough 01:50:44 Fighting temptation and rebuking the devil 01:53:06 Giving my life to Jesus 01:55:29 The God Glock name 01:57:02 The verse that changed my life 01:58:47 Reuniting through Christ 02:00:35 Brothers in Christ 02:02:22 Kingdom partnership 02:04:00 A new chapter in coaching 02:06:12 Spiritual warfare is real 02:09:10 A child possessed 02:10:53 Memorable deliverance 02:15:27 Freemasonry and the NYPD 02:17:43 Exposing the darkness 02:20:00 Deliverance in the Dominican Republic 02:22:20 What about the skeptics? 02:23:41 The battle is real 02:28:00 How demons enter 02:30:10 A message to police officers 02:32:03 Continuing the conversation 02:34:03 My wife's baptism in the Spirit 02:36:44 Grateful for transformation 02:38:44 Purpose over pension 02:39:50 Where to find me 02:42:34 Final prayer     **CONNECT WITH ILYA** Instagram: @ilya_the_evangelist YouTube: @ilyatheevangelist   For prayer, deliverance, or real estate mentorship — reach out on Instagram.   ABOUT PURPOSE OVER PENSION Retired NYPD Detective Lenny Bradley sits down with cops, first responders, and people who've been through it — real conversations about faith, identity, addiction, and what's on the other side of the job. Why Cops Are Losing If They Don't Multiple Streams Of Income

He Retired at 47 With a Base Pension and Zero Regrets — Here's the Plan Joe "Nyce"  did 20 years with the Harrison PD and walked out the door at 47 with his marriage intact, his health intact, three kids he never missed a game for, and multiple businesses already running. His pension is a base pension. The most overtime he ever made in a year was $9,000. And he'll tell you that was the plan from day one. In this episode Joe breaks down how he did it: 8 and a half years on midnights so he could coach every one of his kids' teams, the "5-5-5-5" blueprint for building a life outside the badge before you retire, how he went from $400 in the bank during COVID to owning a nutrition store, and why the badge was never his identity — just the vehicle God gave him to serve. We also get real about the stuff nobody talks about: the divorce math (why build a pension just to give half of it away?), the unceremonious way departments say goodbye, what he saw as a school resource officer dealing with kids and porn, and why he says every cop needs to understand "we are not just cops." If you're a first responder who wants to get to the other side of your career with everything intact, this is the episode. WHAT WE COVER • Why 9/11 pulled him out of Hollywood and into a patrol car • 8.5 years of midnights, 3 hours of sleep, and never missing a game • The divorce math every cop needs to hear • How "Joe Nyce" the bar mitzvah MC became a business • $400 in the bank during COVID and the pivot that saved his family • Why he paid $10,000 to learn from Eric Thomas • The 5-5-5-5 plan: learn the job, master it, build a business, prepare to leave • God first, family second, mission third, goals last • Why departments treat you like a number — and how to leave anyway • "Leave it better than you found it" TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Why cops lose their identity 01:12 Welcome to the podcast 01:18 The wellness event inspiration 03:18 Trauma and personal connection 05:10 The 9/11 calling 06:04 From acting to police work 10:12 Work ethic from sports 12:52 Family first: a provider's mindset 15:34 Sacrificing with midnights 18:24 Health and fitness on midnights 21:52 The school resource officer opportunity 23:06 The entrepreneurial spirit 24:00 From dancer to MC 27:00 The birth of Joe Nice 28:36 Starting a wedding business 31:09 Going out on his own 31:53 Faith and baptism 33:58 Living a life of service 34:56 Police salary and pension 36:52 The divorce rate for cops 37:40 Eric Thomas and speaking 39:21 The importance of coaching 44:53 The cost of coaching 46:55 Coaching and leadership lessons 49:16 Every cop should be an entrepreneur 50:31 Transferable skills from policing 52:06 Passion into profit 55:20 Proving people wrong 56:04 Pivoting during COVID 58:43 Key entrepreneurial successes 01:02:00 Starting at a manageable scale 01:03:00 Balancing work and family 01:05:23 Retirement and new beginnings 01:07:47 Fulfillment in policing 01:10:30 The 20-year plan 01:12:25 Walking away from the department 01:17:50 Identity beyond the badge 01:19:25 The importance of leaving policing 01:20:48 Leadership and culture change 01:22:46 Leave it better than you found it 01:24:56 NYPD vs. suburban policing 01:28:48 One Degree Coaching 01:31:28 The 20-year plan for cops 01:32:17 Purpose over pension 01:33:30 Where to find Joe Nice CONNECT WITH JOE Instagram: @joe_nyce Facebook: Joe Nyce Parello Coaching: onedegreecoachingprogram.com 📲 Connect with Lenny: Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/purposeoverpension/ TikTok – https://www.tiktok.com/@purposeoverpension?_t=ZP-8yvXjeYqxSg&_r=1 Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/lenny.bradley.12/ Email: contact@purposeoverpension.com#purposeoverpension Purpose Over Pension is a podcast for law enforcement officers and first responders who want to build a life bigger than the job — faith, family, fitness, finances, and purpose. The Truth About Being A Woman In The NYPD

For eight years, she stayed silent. In this episode, Simone — a retired NYPD officer turned schoolteacher — sits down and tells her full story publicly for the very first time. She grew up between Brownsville, Brooklyn and Queens Village, served five years as an EMT, and spent over a decade on the NYPD in the 113th Precinct in South Jamaica, Queens. But when she became a new mother and was denied her legal right to take breaks to pump breast milk for her son, she made a decision that would cost her friendships, take eight years of her life, and ultimately force an entire department to change. She took on the NYPD — and won. Her fight pushed the city into compliance, put lactation facilities in commands and public buildings citywide, and created a brand-new patrol guide procedure that now protects every woman who comes after her. This is a raw conversation about faith, courage, the culture women face in law enforcement, and what it really means to put your PURPOSE over your PENSION. In this episode: • Growing up between Brooklyn and Queens, and how it shaped her • Leaving the Nation of Islam and finding her own faith in God • Five years as an EMT before the badge • The unspoken culture women navigate on the job • Being targeted after speaking up — and documenting everything • The moment "enough was enough" and the call that started it all • Eight years of legal battle, isolation, and leaning on faith • The settlement, the policy change, and the legacy she left behind • Retirement, teaching, and what purpose over pension means to her 🎙️ Purpose Over Pension is where law enforcement and first responders find their second life — grounded in faith, purpose, and truth. 👉 Follow @purposeoverpension for more stories like this. 🔔 Subscribe and turn on notifications so you never miss an episode. From Hunting Child Predators To Luxury AirBnB Investor.

In this episode of the Purpose Over Pension Podcast, retired detective Kyle Paterson sits down in New York to tell one of the most raw stories we've had on the show — a journey through loss, darkness, addiction, and ultimately, freedom. It started with heartbreak. At 17, Kyle lost his mother to cancer after watching her fight it for three years. That loss sent him to UC Berkeley determined to find a cure — until a ride-along in West Oakland changed everything and pulled him into a life of public service. He became a cop at 22 and a detective by 28, eventually landing in the work he found the most meaningful and the most haunting: investigating internet crimes against children. Kyle opens up about what those cases showed him, how common the problem really is, and the toll of carrying that weight home every night. That weight had a cost. Like so many in law enforcement, Kyle turned to alcohol to cope — until the day he was the one preaching "get help" to everyone else and finally had to look in the mirror and make the call for himself. He shares his path to sobriety, the therapist who he says saved his life, and how he clawed his way back. Today, Kyle is sober, retired from the badge, and building a life of purpose with his wife and four kids — running a portfolio of luxury short-term rentals and coaching first responders on how to build their own Plan B beyond the pension. This one covers it all: grief, the reality of police work, addiction and recovery, faith, family, and financial freedom. If you're a cop, a first responder, or anyone who's ever felt trapped by the job, this conversation is for you.
