Embracing the Excitement Medicine Hat Stampede "Endless Summer"

As the anticipation builds for the Medicine Hat Stampede, excitement is palpable among the community and visitors alike. This year promises a vibrant lineup of events, engaging themes, and a commitment to providing unforgettable experiences. Join us as we explore what’s in store for the Stampede and how you can be part of the action. In this year’s Stampede, the theme is "Endless Summer," which aims to encompass all the fun and festivities that summer brings. Ryan McCracken, the Marketing and Sponsorship Coordinator, shared that the theme includes not only the rodeo but also free entertainment and summer activities like enjoying a cold drink in the sun. This holistic approach ensures that attendees can experience the joy of summer through multiple facets of the event. The Stampede thrives on community involvement, with over 30 volunteer-driven committees. If you’re interested in getting involved, Ryan encourages potential volunteers to reach out via phone or visit the Stampede office. An upcoming volunteer information night will allow interested individuals to meet committee representatives and learn about various roles available. This is a fantastic opportunity for those looking to contribute to their community and gain behind-the-scenes experience. The events calendar is packed with thrilling activities. The traditional rodeo has seen changes this year, with two night rodeos instead of three, allowing for a more intense atmosphere and the potential for bigger acts. Performances by Tom Cochrane and Johnny Reed will kick off the festivities, promising unforgettable entertainment. Notably, the Bronx and Honky Tonks rodeo will take place from April 10 to 12, featuring all the beloved staples and a VIP patio that has been well-received in previous years. This year, the Stampede is introducing exciting new events, including the Wild Pony Races, which will add a unique flair to the lineup. This event, brought in by committee chair Neil Siblecki, is designed to captivate audiences and create memorable moments. Moreover, the Cars and Guitars event in August will merge classic cars with live music, featuring a Jimmy Buffett tribute concert that promises to bring a festive atmosphere to the grounds. Dive into the Cause: The 2026 Medicine Hat Polar Plunge

Every year, brave souls gather for the Medicine Hat Polar Plunge, where plunging into icy waters serves a greater purpose. With the Special Olympics National Summer Games just around the corner, this year's event promises to be more impactful than ever. Join us as we explore the significance of this unique fundraising effort and why it’s essential to support our local athletes. What is the Polar Plunge? The Polar Plunge is a thrilling event where participants jump into freezing water to raise funds for the Special Olympics. This winter tradition, humorously tagged as "freezing for a reason," not only challenges participants physically but also serves a noble cause. As Brian and Dave Allen discuss, the weather forecast for this year’s plunge on February 8th shows promise with temperatures expected to be around four degrees Celsius, a welcome change from the typical frigid conditions. This event is part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which has merged with the Special Olympics to raise funds and awareness for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Brian highlights that this year is particularly special, as the National Summer Games will be hosted in Medicine Hat, marking a significant milestone for the local community. The plunge not only raises money but also fosters community spirit and support for our athletes.   Dave, a seasoned participant, shares his experience of jumping into the icy dumpster, a unique twist that sets Medicine Hat apart. He describes the initial shock of the cold water and the adrenaline rush that follows. Despite the freezing temperatures, the sense of camaraderie and support from fellow participants makes the experience exhilarating. The event encourages not just jumping into icy water but also promotes teamwork and community involvement.   The athletes involved in the Special Olympics are referred to as "athletes"—a term that resonates with their dedication and hard work. Brian emphasizes that the Special Olympics is more than just big events; it encompasses year-round activities that help athletes build skills, confidence, and friendships. The upcoming plunge is an opportunity for the community to rally behind these athletes, encouraging their journey and celebrating their achievements. The 2026 Medicine Hat Polar Plunge is more than just a daring dive into cold water; it symbolizes community support for the Special Olympics and its athletes. As we gear up for this year’s event, let’s come together to raise funds, volunteer, or simply cheer on those brave enough to take the plunge. 5. From Struggles to Success a conversation with Nadine Niba

From Struggles to Success a conversation with Nadine Niba

In the latest episode of Bring Back the Porch, host Brian welcomes Nadine Niba, who shares her incredible journey from Cameroon to Canada with nothing but a suitcase, a hundred dollars, and a dream. Nadine’s story is a testament to resilience and the true meaning of the American dream, filled with challenges, triumphs, and valuable lessons for anyone pursuing their goals. Nadine’s journey began with a common belief among many immigrants: that moving to a developed country would guarantee success and wealth. "There was the mentality that if you move to this part of the world, you're going to make it big," she recalls. For Nadine, Canada represented hope and opportunity. However, she soon realized that the reality was far from the dream she had envisioned. Upon arriving in Calgary as an international student, Nadine was overwhelmed by the high cost of living and education. She initially thought that life would be easy, with a good job waiting for her. Instead, she found herself struggling to make ends meet, with tuition fees of $22,000 a year and living expenses piling up. "A hundred dollars is not gonna do anything," she candidly admits, highlighting the disparity between expectations and reality. With limited resources, Nadine had to get creative to survive. After her mother managed to send her $6,000 to cover her first semester's tuition, Nadine worked tirelessly to support herself. Balancing three jobs while attending school, she often felt exhausted and defeated. "I was always behind on rent," she shares, revealing the emotional toll of her circumstances. Despite the hardships, Nadine persevered, relying on her determination and hard work to keep moving forward. Nadine’s breakthrough came when she met a kind stranger on the train who recognized her struggle and directed her to the Women in Need Society in Calgary. This organization provided her with food, clothing, and even furniture for her empty apartment. "It felt like Christmas," Nadine recalls, illustrating the profound impact of community support during her darkest days. Just when Nadine was ready to give up and return to her home country, she received a job offer that changed everything. "The week I was supposed to go back, I got my first job offer," she says, expressing gratitude for the opportunity that shifted her trajectory. Nadine now works in a corporate role she once aspired to, proving that persistence and hard work can lead to success. Nadine Niba’s story is a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by many immigrants and the strength it takes to overcome adversity. Her journey highlights the importance of community, resilience, and the belief that dreams can come true with hard work and determination.  Hey we need your support.
