The Power of Touch: Why Connection Matters After Loss (Episode 50)

After losing a husband, one of the things a widow may miss most is something that can be hard to put into words: touch. Holding hands. A hug. An arm around your shoulder. A hand on your back. Sitting close together. Those small, everyday moments of physical connection can suddenly be gone, and their absence can feel incredibly deep. In this episode of A Widow’s Life, Vickie and Cindy talk about the power of touch and why connection matters so much after loss. They share personal stories about missing the physical touch of their husbands and discuss how a simple hug, a gentle touch on the arm, or simply staying present with someone can communicate, You matter. I see you. I care about you. This conversation also goes beyond physical touch. Sometimes we “touch” another person through kindness, encouragement, a smile, a thoughtful gift, a meal, a note, or simply taking the time to notice someone. In this episode, you’ll hear about: Why widows may deeply miss physical touch after losing a spouseThe importance of asking for a hug when you need oneHow simple physical connection can help us feel cared for and less aloneWhy consent and sensitivity matter when offering someone a hug or physical touchHow Jesus used touch as an expression of compassion and careWhy a hug can become a ministry all by itselfWays to “touch” someone’s heart through kindness, encouragement, and thoughtful gesturesHow serving and caring for others can also help bring connection back into our own livesThe importance of letting God touch your heart so you can reach out and touch the lives of others You may not always know what someone around you is carrying. Sometimes the smallest act of kindness—a hug, a smile, a kind word, or simply staying and listening—can mean more than you realize. And if you are the one longing for connection, remember: it is okay to say, “I need a hug.” You were never meant to walk through grief completely alone. 🎙️ The Power of Touch: Why Connection Matters After Loss

Building New Pathways After Loss: Renewing Your Mind with God’s Truth (Episode 49)

Grief changes so much about our lives—including the thoughts we think, the routines we follow, and the pathways our minds naturally travel. In this episode of A Widow’s Life, Vickie and Cindy talk about what it means to begin creating new pathways after loss. Just as walking the same trail through the grass eventually creates a visible path, repeatedly thinking the same thoughts can create deeply established patterns in our minds. But those patterns don’t have to determine where we go next. Together, they explore the connection between Scripture, our thoughts, and what we are learning about the brain. They discuss the importance of renewing the mind, recognizing negative thought patterns, and intentionally replacing them with the truth of God’s Word. For widows, creating new pathways doesn’t mean erasing the life you shared with your husband or forgetting the memories you treasure. It means learning how to build something new alongside what was there before—new routines, new experiences, new ways of thinking, and new reminders that your life still has purpose and value. Vickie and Cindy also talk about the Lord’s Prayer and how slowing down to truly consider its words can help redirect our thoughts toward God—His provision, His will, His forgiveness, His protection, and His presence. You’ll also hear practical encouragement for creating new pathways in everyday life: taking a walk, trying something different, learning a new skill, changing a routine, getting your body moving, practicing gratitude, and intentionally speaking God’s truth when your thoughts begin pulling you toward fear, loneliness, or discouragement. You may still be able to say, “I miss my husband,” while also saying, “God still has good things for my life.” You may feel lonely today while reminding yourself that you are not alone. And you may acknowledge that your life has changed while still believing that your life has value. Creating new pathways takes repetition. It happens one thought, one choice, one prayer, and one step at a time. So today, ask yourself: What new pathway could I begin creating? You don’t have to change everything at once. Choose one small thing, begin there, and trust God as He continues leading you forward. Blessings, Vickie & Cindy A Widow’s Life

When Life Doesn’t Make Sense: What I Know to Be True About God (Episode 48)

When life doesn’t make sense, what can we hold onto? In this episode of A Widow’s Life, Vickie and Cindy talk about the truths they have learned to return to when circumstances feel overwhelming, prayers seem unanswered, and the future feels uncertain. Grief can leave us asking hard questions: Why did this happen? Why did God allow it? When will things change? While we may not always have the answers, we can remind ourselves of what we know about the character of God. God is good. God is faithful. God loves us. God is with us. And He will never leave us or forsake us. Cindy shares a powerful story from a difficult season in her life when it seemed like everything was going wrong. In the middle of the frustration, she found herself declaring out loud, “God is good. He loves me. He’s merciful. He’s faithful.” Years later, that moment of faith became an example her daughter remembered during a difficult season of her own. Vickie also shares about a time after losing Barry when several painful circumstances piled up at once and she wondered how much more she could handle. An unexpected message from her pastor reminded her to keep praying, keep believing, and keep standing in the gap for her family. Together, they explore the difference between knowing about God and truly knowing Him personally. The more time we spend with Him—through prayer, His Word, and remembering His faithfulness—the more deeply we learn to trust His character even when our circumstances haven’t changed yet. They also encourage listeners to create their own “book of remembrance”—a record of the times God has shown up, answered prayer, provided encouragement, or carried them through something difficult. Those memories can become anchors of faith when another hard season comes. If life feels uncertain today, take some time to remind yourself of what you know to be true: “My God is good to me.” “My God is faithful to me.” “My God loves me.” “My God will never leave me.” Your feelings may change from day to day, but God’s character does not. We hope this episode encourages you to keep trusting, keep praying, and keep getting to know the God who promises to walk with you through every valley.

A Time to Laugh: Finding Joy Again After Loss (Episode 47)

Grief can be exhausting. It can make life feel heavy, drain your motivation, and sometimes even make laughter feel inappropriate. But joy and grief are not opposites. In this episode, Vickie and Cindy talk about the importance of allowing yourself to experience fun, laughter, and simple pleasures again after loss. Ecclesiastes 3:4 reminds us that there is “a time to weep and a time to laugh,” and sometimes both can exist in the very same day. They share how laughter and fun can give your heart a much-needed rest from grief, reduce stress, restore energy, strengthen relationships, and help you reconnect with parts of yourself that may have been buried beneath loss. Fun may look different now than it did when your husband was alive—and that’s okay. It might be coffee with a friend, taking a walk, playing a game, dancing to an old song, feeding the birds, working on a craft, swimming, learning something new, or simply doing something that makes you smile. You may even feel guilty the first time you realize you are enjoying yourself again. But experiencing joy does not mean you loved your husband any less or that your grief is over. It simply means you are allowing yourself to keep living. In this episode, we talk about: Why laughter and grief can exist togetherHow fun can reduce stress and restore motivationLetting go of guilt about enjoying life againRediscovering childhood interests and old hobbiesFinding new things that bring you joyTaking small steps when you don’t even know what sounds fun anymoreHow your own joy can encourage other widowsTrusting God to help lead you into a new season of life Sometimes laughter really can be medicine for a grieving heart. You don’t have to wait until the grief is completely gone before you allow yourself to smile again. Start small. Try something. Call a friend. Take the drive. Get the ice cream cone. Turn on the music. And give yourself permission to enjoy the life that is still in front of you.
