If someone accidentally brought up any passage about sin, judgment, or repentance, these people quickly chastised them as using outdated scare tactics, having no comprehension of true love, aligning themselves with judgmental right-wing legalists, or being so spiritually immature that they just didn’t understand. Obviously, the answer is supposed to be Christianity, isn’t it? And yet the church isn’t always very unified—at all. At last count, there are over 45,000 Christian denominations globally. Narrow it down to just one denomination, and chances are that even that one isn’t very unified. Narrow that denomination down to just one church in that one denomination, and even just one life group in that church, and if you’ve been part of a church longer than a month, you can guess it’ll have its share of disunity. My deck provides the perfect spectator seat to the herd of deer that frequently visit the back field. I became captivated by a tender fawn, fumbling to climb the bank from the creek to catch up to its mother. In that moment, it was in need of family. This pack comes to graze a couple times a day. Sometimes they wander, sometimes they stampede, and sometimes they frolic and play. Together. I wonder how well they’d fare without one another—especially the young ones. I often wonder the same about the Lord’s disciples. How many times, even unaware, are they in need of family (if only to frolic)? Listen for more... I was wrapped up in all of “my” things, and my tunnel vision didn’t allow me to always see other things that should have been important. I was focused on growing a student ministry, growing as a leader, learning everything I could learn, and honestly, appearing to be a spiritual hero that “my people” couldn’t live without. Even when I scheduled in father-son time, I was often preoccupied with church ministry. Throughout most of my son’s life, my day off has been Tuesday. Most of my friends in ministry take off on Mondays or Fridays, but I’ve always found Tuesday to be a perfect stopping point, allowing me to regroup after the weekend, rest, and then finish the week strong. Because my wife has also worked most of our son’s life, that meant Tuesday became known as “Man Day.” Listen for more...     How Does Holiness Relate to Love? | Richard Jett

Isn’t it good enough just to be a loving person? And what does it even mean to be holy? The word itself means “set apart.” So, some have answered the question of how to be holy by removing themselves as far as possible from the world. For example, they become monks or nuns. Is that what it means to be holy? When we look at the Bible, we see that holiness sets us apart from sinful thoughts and behaviors. So, would holiness mean submitting to a somewhat colorless life defined by “shall not” rules? Is that how we become holy? Here’s a better way to ask the question: how does Jesus, God in the flesh and holiest of all, model for us what it means to be holy? He had 12 dudes traveling with him 24/7 and had “scum of society” hanging around him so much that the religious people accused him of being a glutton and drunkard (Matthew 9:11; 11:19; Mark 2:16; Luke 5:30; 7:34). And if we don’t talk about the things that bother us, we often internalize our angst in ways that can become debilitating and dangerous. But how do we talk about the things that bother us without being slanderous or gossipy? Many of us go to safe spaces. A safe space is that person we can be totally open and transparent with about our joy and pain. A safe space can be a very good thing (even essential). But there is a real danger in a safe space: sometimes calling someone a safe space is just coded language for saying they are the one with whom we gossip, betray confidences, or behave unprofessionally. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, it’s actually something that I can explain fairly easily (which isn’t always easy for me when it comes to things like dishware). It’s a plain mug with “I” and then a heart. Then, under the I-heart is an N and a Y. Put all four symbols together, and it says, “I love New York.” As a souvenir, the “I love New York” mug basically translates into, “When I went to New York City, I found it to be very lovable. I enjoyed it. I’m a fan. I’ll go back if I can.” Listen for more... The lightning-quick speed of communication and the vast array of communication methods we have are astounding. I am old enough to have seen the development of many of these methods. I have gone through having only a home phone to my own mobile phone to a number of different ways you can reach me now. Yet despite the technological advances, people are more disconnected from each other on a personal and spiritual level. This disconnection is one area in which the Church needs to step into the void.
