The $35K VP: Underpaid, Overqualified & Blackballed

What do you do when you've done everything right and you're still being undervalued? In this episode of Black Women S.A.V.E. Black Women, Kamika Dillard sits down with communications strategist and Brand Inc. PR founder Dr. Brandy Sims for an honest conversation about pay inequity, career setbacks, entrepreneurship and knowing your worth. After discovering she was making just $35,000 as a Vice President despite her education, experience and results, Dr. Sims challenged the system, walked away from a workplace that undervalued her and found herself professionally blackballed. Rather than giving up, she turned her skills, relationships and expertise into a thriving PR agency. Together, they discuss the realities of underpayment, advocating for yourself at work, building a business from scratch and why Black women should never allow others to determine their value. The biggest lesson? Sometimes the moment that forces you to walk away is the same moment that pushes you toward something greater. About Dr. Brandy Sims Dr. Brandy Sims is the founder of Brand Inc. PR, with nearly 18 years of experience in public relations across nonprofits, banking, beauty, entertainment and sports. She holds a PhD in Strategic Media Communication, researching social media's influence on radicalized behavior and media literacy. What happens when you stop waiting for permission and start choosing yourself? Reecie shares how she built a platform without waiting for permission, challenged political disinformation when few others were willing to do so and created opportunities by refusing to stay inside someone else's box. Together, they explore Black community, political engagement, media influence and why success means defining happiness for yourself rather than chasing someone else's expectations. The Wisdom of the Beehive: Lessons for Black Women After a Layoff

What if a layoff isn't the end of the story, but the beginning of something new? In this episode of Black Women S.A.V.E. Black Women, Kamika Dillard sits down with apitherapist and founder of The Apiarian Home, Netta Caligari, for a conversation about layoffs, career transitions, healing and what it means to build a life that's aligned with your values. After being laid off for the first time in her career, Netta chose to pause instead of panic. She eventually walked away from the highest-paying role she had ever held, bet on herself and built a business rooted in purpose. Along the way, a personal health journey introduced her to the healing power of hive products, and the beehive became a powerful teacher about healing, purpose and community. In this conversation: Why a layoff can be a signal to pause instead of panic Her one-way door versus two-way door framework for making big life and career decisions How she prepared financially to walk away from stability and bet on herself What a honeybee superorganism teaches us about leadership, community and collective care Why Black women need community, mentorship and support to thrive after major life transitions The biggest lesson? A hive survives because every bee contributes to the whole. When one bee is impacted, the colony is impacted. The same is true for us. Also in this episode: Kamika's Fail Forward File on skipping her mask and making decisions from abundance, and this week's S.A.V.E Strategy: Validate.
