    An Interview with Bruce Langford

Bruce Langford's boundless energy and electric charisma reverberate off the walls of the Orcas Center when he's leading the Orcas Choral Society's evening practices as their Artistic Director. An Interview with Thor Hanson

Conservation biologist and renowned author Thor Hanson was one of the first people on my mind when I began this interview show. His books have been in and out of our house for years, and his passion for all things nature is contagious. I’ll let excerpts from his website (thorhanson.net) tell his story: Thor Hanson was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, where he now lives on an island with his wife and son. He caught his first salmon at age four, and often collected a wide array of temporary summertime pets, from caterpillars and tadpoles to garter snakes, hermit crabs, and tree frogs. His early interest in the natural world steered him towards a career in conservation biology. Hanson received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Redlands, his master’s from the University of Vermont’s Field Naturalist Program, and his doctorate in a joint program through the University of Idaho and  the Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza, Costa Rica. Hanson’s research and conservation activities have taken him around the globe. He has studied Central American trees and songbirds, nest predation in Tanzania, and the grisly feeding habits of African vultures. He served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Uganda, where he helped establish the mountain gorilla tourism program in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and he has also helped manage a brown bear tourism project for the U.S. Forest Service in Alaska. He often works at the interface between natural and human systems, and has conducted research on habitat fragmentation, endangered species, and the ecological impacts of warfare. Hanson is a Guggenheim Fellow, a Switzer Environmental Fellow, and an independent conservation biologist. In addition to his writing, he consults for conservation groups and government agencies, and is a sought-after public speaker. Hanson co-hosted the PBS Nature series American Spring Live, and has appeared as a guest on programs ranging from NPR’s Fresh Air to On Point, Science Friday, The World, The Splendid Table, and Book Lust with Nancy Pearl. Hanson is the author of Close to Home, Hurricane Lizards and Plastic Squid, Buzz, The Triumph of Seeds, Feathers, and The Impenetrable Forest, as well as the illustrated children’s favorites, The Escape Artist, Star & the Maestro and Bartholomew Quill.   Honors for his books have included The John Burroughs Medal, The Phi  Beta Kappa Award in Science, The AAAS/Subaru SB&F Prize, and three  Pacific Northwest Book Awards, and his writing has been translated into more than ten languages.  Hanson’s academic work includes co-editorship of the volume Warfare Ecology, as well as dozens of papers in such journals as BioScience, Conservation Biology, Environmental Conservation, Neotropical Ornithology, Neotropical Primates, The Pan-Pacfic Entomologist, and Molecular Ecology. His popular articles and essays have appeared in publications ranging from Audubon and Orion to The Wall Street Journal, The Times of London, The Los Angeles Times, The American Scholar, The Guardian, and The Huffington Post.

An Interview with Kaj and Tashi Litch

Winning the 2026 Telluride National Bluegrass Band Contest in Colorado was a dream come true for The Litch Brothers. Kaj and Tashi Litch estimate they've played about 500 shows around the country since they were children. They have been dropping jaws with their bluegrass skills for over a decade, which is phenomenal for being in their early 20s! After learning how to play the violin/fiddle from their mother, they branched out to other instruments and began performing as the Crow Valley String Band (mother Rachel on fiddle and father Jim on bass), then became a duo called Brother for Sale, renamed to Brograss, and they now play as The Litch Brothers: Tashi (mandolin), Kaj (guitar), Evan Snoey (fiddle) and Ben Lewis (bass). Not only do Tashi and Kaj excel in music, but in just about everything they pursue. Tashi attended Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, where he studied music through the Conservatory and earned a Bachelor of Musical Arts. He went on to East Tennessee State University, studying Appalachian/roots music in the very places it was developed. Kaj just finished his degree at Yale in Global Affairs and Human Rights and will be continuing his education at Oxford, peppering in 15 upcoming shows through October in Washington, Tennessee, and Maryland with the band. Tashi and local American roots musicians Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms co-founded and continue to organize OrcasFest, one of our newer annual festivals here on the island, which entails a weekend of performances, workshops, dances, and concerts at venues all around Eastsound from musicians who have traveled sometimes far and wide to be here. For more information about it, go to www.orcasfest.com. You can get tickets at Darvill’s or on litchbrothers.com to see The Litch Brothers here at The Grange on Thursday night before they head off-island again (hurry, as they’re selling out!). You will not regret it. They also happen to be some of the most genuine, polite young men you could ever meet. For more information about them, go to www.litchbrothers.com.
