    In this installment of Famous or Infamous Trials, Dr. Josh Carpenter begins the story of Father Hans Schmidt, the only Catholic priest executed in the electric chair in the United States. Before reaching the murder and trial that made Schmidt infamous, the episode looks closely at his childhood in Germany, his intensely religious upbringing, early reports of unusual behavior, fascination with blood, and the family and psychiatric history that would later become central to his insanity defense. The episode also examines a recurring problem in criminal trials: how much weight should be given to childhood memories and family testimony reconstructed years after the crime? Dr. Carpenter explores the tension between evidence suggesting genuine psychological disturbance and the possibility that Schmidt and those around him later exaggerated parts of his history to support an insanity defense. The result is the beginning of a larger story about mental illness, criminal responsibility, religious obsession, and the difficult legal question of what it means to truly understand that an act is wrong.
