When Life Doesn't Go to Plan: Breast Cancer, Fertility & Friendship

Today on Scrambled, we're joined by Jamie and Mayan, the women behind The Friendship Diagnosis, a community created to help women navigating breast cancer in their 20s and 30s feel a little less alone. Jamie, who lives in New York City, was diagnosed with hormone-positive breast cancer nearly two years ago. Mayan, a nurse living in Denver, was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in January 2026. Despite coming from different backgrounds and being at different stages of life, the two found each other during treatment through a mutual friend, forming a friendship that would become something much bigger. What started as a connection during one of the hardest chapters of their lives turned into The Friendship Diagnosis: a platform dedicated to building community, raising awareness, and reminding other young women going through breast cancer that they don't have to navigate it alone. We're talking about what it's like to receive a breast cancer diagnosis in your 30s, how cancer changes the way you see your future, and the unexpected friendships that can come from shared experiences. We also get into the conversations around fertility that often accompany a diagnosis, including their personal egg-freezing journeys, making difficult decisions about motherhood, and navigating fertility preservation alongside cancer treatment. Plus, we discuss how cancer impacts relationships, friendships, and life's timelines, what it's like watching your peers hit milestones while your own future feels uncertain, and what they wish more people understood about being diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age. This is an honest, moving conversation about friendship, resilience, fertility, and finding community when life takes an unexpected turn. A breast cancer diagnosis can turn your world upside down, and in the midst of making difficult decisions about treatment, questions about fertility and future family building can feel overwhelming. But for those who hope to have children, understanding your options early can make a meaningful difference. On this episode of Scrambled, we’re joined by Dr. Sheeva Talebian, a reproductive endocrinologist at CCRM Fertility, for an important conversation about breast cancer, fertility preservation, and family planning. Dr. Talebian also breaks down the unique considerations for patients with hormone-sensitive breast cancer, including how fertility specialists approach ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval when time is of the essence. We explore what family building can look like after treatment, how a BRCA mutation may factor into reproductive decisions, and what patients should know as they navigate their options. Plus, Dr. Talebian shares her own breast cancer journey and how experiencing cancer as both a physician and a patient has shaped the way she cares for others. Whether you’re navigating a diagnosis yourself, supporting someone you love, or simply looking to better understand the relationship between cancer treatment and fertility, this episode offers practical information, perspective, and reassurance that family-building options may still be available. Welcome to episode 45 of Scrambled the Podcast. In this episode Ash & Alyssa are joined by guest Dr. Lucy M. De La Cruz, nationally recognized breast surgical oncologist and Chief of Breast Surgery at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, for an eye-opening conversation about what every woman deserves to know about her breast health. You’re Allowed to Be Jealous: Infertility, Grief & How to Support a Friend w/ Therapist Sophia Witheiler

Welcome back to Scrambled! This week, we’re joined by Sophia Witheiler, a licensed mental health counselor in New York and trauma-informed psychotherapist at LEL Therapy. Sophia primarily works with young adult women in their 20s–40s who are navigating complex trauma, anxiety, perfectionism, and attachment issues. She also runs a fertility support group for people navigating the emotional complexities of fertility struggles and family planning. In this episode, we’re talking about the side of fertility that doesn’t always get enough attention: the emotional toll. From the anxiety and uncertainty of trying to conceive to jealousy, grief, relationships, boundaries, and the pressure to “stay positive,” we unpack what it can actually feel like to navigate fertility struggles and how therapy and community can help. We talk about what therapy can look like during fertility struggles, how to cope with living somewhere between hope and disappointment, and why partners may experience the same journey in completely different ways. Sophia also shares insight into why pregnancy announcements, baby showers, social media, and even friendships can become unexpectedly difficult and why having those feelings doesn’t make you a bad person. We also get into the things people say when they mean well but accidentally make things harder, including “just relax” and “everything happens for a reason,” and what friends and family can say instead. Plus, we talk about setting boundaries around intrusive questions, navigating pregnancy announcements, muting social media, skipping events when you need to, and communicating your needs without feeling guilty. And finally, we answer some listener questions about fertility timelines, finding more acceptance and reducing anxiety in your 20s and 30s, and what to consider when you’re thinking about freezing your eggs but the financial side feels overwhelming. A reminder: fertility journeys are incredibly personal, and there is no single “right” way to experience or navigate them. If you’re struggling, you deserve support, whether that comes from a therapist, support group, partner, friend, or another trusted person in your life. So, Why Cant I Get Pregnant Again? Secondary Infertility w/ Dr Arielle Bayer

Today we’re so excited to welcome Dr. Arielle Bayer, a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist at CCRM Fertility of New York. Dr. Bayer specializes in helping patients navigate fertility challenges, and she’s also passionate about reproductive health advocacy and making fertility care more personalized and accessible. On today’s episode, we’re talking about something that isn’t discussed nearly enough: secondary infertility. Because what happens when you’ve already had a baby, assumed getting pregnant again would be straightforward, and suddenly… it isn’t? We’re getting into what secondary infertility actually means, why it can happen even if you had no trouble conceiving the first time, and what the fertility workup and treatment process can look like. We’re also talking about the emotional side of it, he guilt, confusion, isolation, and complicated feelings that can come with wanting another baby while also feeling incredibly grateful for the child you already have. Dr. Bayer walks us through everything from age and ovulation to sperm quality and changes in reproductive health, plus when it makes sense to seek an evaluation and what treatment options are available, from trying on your own to medication, IUI, and IVF. And, of course, we’re asking the questions you might be thinking about but are afraid to say out loud, including how pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, or complications from a previous pregnancy can impact future fertility, and whether having successfully conceived before can actually tell you anything about your fertility today. If you’ve ever wondered, “My body worked before… so why isn’t it working now?” this episode is for you. And if you’re supporting someone going through secondary infertility, we’re talking about how to show up for them in a way that acknowledges what they’re going through without minimizing it simply because they already have a child. We’re so grateful to Dr. Bayer for joining us and helping us unpack a topic that deserves so much more conversation. As a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist, Dr. Batcheller has helped countless patients navigate their fertility journeys. But she also brings a deeply personal perspective to the conversation. After facing her own fertility preservation challenges in her 30s, she went on to expand her family in her 40s, welcoming her son at age 41. We dive into the so-called "40+ pregnancy boom" and discuss what's driving more women to pursue parenthood later in life. Dr. Batcheller breaks down the realities of fertility after 40, what medical advancements have changed, and why age is only one piece of the fertility puzzle. Dr. Batcheller shares advice for those currently navigating IVF, common misconceptions about fertility treatments, and the lessons she learned both as a physician and as a patient. Whether you're actively trying to conceive, considering egg freezing, or simply curious about how fertility is evolving, this episode offers valuable insight and hope.
