Israel's Lobby: American in the Grip of a Foreign Power by Eli Clifton and Ian Lustick

also viewable on Substack:  https://palestinebookshelf.substack.com/p/israels-lobby-america-in-the-grip Copy of the summary:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KiBSLYqj5qd2TXU4cE9pLfRGg3Pdis7rd5fwQxwx-Tw/edit?pli=1&tab=t.300iwxi1y48g MAIN THESIS The Israel lobby channels extreme Israeli political impulses into U.S. decision-making, subordinating American national interests, security, and democratic norms to those of a foreign power.   This influence is more dangerous today than in earlier periods because of changes such as the evisceration of campaign-finance rules, Israel's rightward shift, and the lobby's turn toward suppressing dissent rather than defending policy.   The book updates and intensifies the earlier analysis in Mearsheimer and Walt's The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy, arguing the lobby now polices speech and helps turn Israel into what the authors term a "crazy state." HISTORICAL CONTEXT Since the 1970s Israel has been the largest recipient of U.S. aid, regularly receiving roughly a quarter of all U.S. military assistance worldwide; cumulative inflation-adjusted aid since 1948 exceeds $300 billion. The relationship is framed against George Washington's Farewell Address warning against foreign influence, entangling alliances, and the elevation of emotional or ideological attachments over genuine national interest.   The book traces the lobby's evolution and its success in securing unconditional support across administrations despite occasional intelligence-community or diplomatic pushback. DETAILS OF THE LOBBY'S INFLUENCE Documents enormous aid packages (including at least $16.3 billion in military aid after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks) and favorable terms unavailable to other recipients.    Illustrates congressional dynamics (e.g., AIPAC's ability to marshal votes and punish critics such as Rep. Jim Moran) and the role of megadonors in elections and policy.   Notes the criminalization of criticism, campus speech restrictions, and the equation of policy critique with attacks on Jews EVIDENCE AND RESEARCH Combines investigative reporting with political-science analysis.   Relies on aid statistics, declassified materials, public statements by Israeli and U.S. officials, congressional records, and examples spanning multiple administrations.   Quotes and details specific episodes to illustrate mechanisms of influence. October 7th, Three Years On by Stephen Heiner

#EndTheOccupation also viewable on Substack:  https://palestinebookshelf.substack.com/p/october-7th-three-years-on Copy of the summary:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KiBSLYqj5qd2TXU4cE9pLfRGg3Pdis7rd5fwQxwx-Tw/edit?pli=1&tab=t.54452r23av6i MAIN THESIS The conflict and the scale of death and displacement since October 7 are the continuation of a long-planned process of ethnic cleansing that began with political Zionism in the late 19th century.   Framing everything as a response to October 7 ignores prior history (especially the Balfour Declaration, the Mandate, and 1947–48), Israeli actions such as the Hannibal Directive, and the documented toll of the subsequent campaign.   Palestinians possess a legal and moral right to resist occupation; a Jewish state in the historic land requires ongoing displacement, creating an irresolvable trilemma of size, Jewish majority, and democracy. HISTORICAL CONTEXT Opens with Heiner's August 2023 visits to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Jericho, and Hebron, including the Ibrahimi Mosque/Cave of the Patriarchs and the Kiryat Arba settlement.   Traces political Zionism from Theodor Herzl's 1896 *Der Judenstaat*, the First Zionist Congress (1897), failed Ottoman negotiations, and the 1917 Balfour Declaration (which Heiner, citing Rashid Khalidi, calls the first of six acts of war against Palestine and the foundational lie).   Covers the British Mandate (1917–1948), demographic realities, land purchases and expulsions, the 1936–39 Arab Revolt, Peel Commission, Jewish militias, the UN partition, Plan Dalet and pre-May 14 expulsions, the 1948 war, and the subsequent chain of wars and operations through 2023–present. EVIDENCE AND RESEARCH Draws on his own 2023 travel observations, settler statements, and archival/historical works he has reviewed (Pappé, Benny Morris's revised refugee study, Alison Weir, Alfred Lilienthal, Eugene Rogan & Avi Shlaim, Rashid Khalidi, Ghassan Kanafani, and others).   Cites demographic figures, UN partition percentages, Balfour text, Golda Meir's "bride already had a groom" anecdote, Moshe Dayan's 1967 remarks, the 2018/19 Nation-State Basic Law, and contemporary casualty reports from the UN and Israeli human-rights groups.   References films (Palestine 36) and the broader Palestine Bookshelf catalog for deeper reading. Requiem for Gaza by Chris Hedges & Joe Sacco

also viewable on Substack:  https://palestinebookshelf.substack.com/p/requiem-for-gaza-by-chris-hedges Copy of the summary:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KiBSLYqj5qd2TXU4cE9pLfRGg3Pdis7rd5fwQxwx-Tw/edit?tab=t.w21irq3o66ov MAIN THESIS Hedges and Sacco present Israel's post-October 7 military campaign as the culmination of a long colonial project of ethnic cleansing and erasure of Palestinian presence and identity, enabled by U.S. and Western support.   The book argues that the violence exposes a series of Israeli "lies" (about the two-state solution, adherence to laws of war, human shields, aid diversion, and the scale of civilian casualties) while revealing explicit or implicit plans for mass expulsion.   Through interviews and drawings, it aims to combat erasure, preserve memory of destroyed places and lives, and record both massacres and stories of resilience.   HISTORICAL CONTEXT Set against the long history of the Gaza blockade, prior Israeli operations, and Hedges' and Sacco's earlier reporting (Palestine, Footnotes in Gaza).   Begins with the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023 and Israel's subsequent response, which the authors frame as providing a pretext for a long-desired campaign of removal and destruction.   References broader Zionist history, myths (e.g., Ehud Barak's "villa in the jungle"), and the denial of Palestinian historical presence as an existential threat to the Zionist project.   EVIDENCE AND RESEARCH Primary material from Hedges and Sacco's spring 2025 interviews in Cairo with 29 Palestinian families who had recently left Gaza, supplemented by Hedges' prior knowledge and Israeli sources (Haaretz reporting, military intelligence figures claiming high civilian casualty rates, polls showing majority support among Israeli Jews for ethnic cleansing of Gaza).   Cites U.S. military aid figures (~$21.7 billion since October 7), ICJ orders and the Genocide Convention (which Israel has not complied with), gas field and canal proposals, and data on malnutrition, infrastructure collapse, and ongoing violations.   Sacco contributes graphic sections depicting daily life under bombardment and forced displacement; the book includes notes and bibliography.  Find other summaries like this at Palestine Bookshelf: www.palestinebookshelf.org #EndTheOccupation

No Land to Stand On: Notes from Detention by Mahmoud Khalil

also viewable on Substack:  https://palestinebookshelf.substack.com/p/no-land-to-stand-on-notes-from-detention Copy of the summary:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KiBSLYqj5qd2TXU4cE9pLfRGg3Pdis7rd5fwQxwx-Tw/edit?pli=1&tab=t.53iwk88thyz0 MAIN THESIS Khalil's detention was not based on any crime or evidence but on his advocacy for Palestinian rights and criticism of Israeli policies and Columbia's ties to Israel. He argues that Palestinians are treated as an exception to standard legal and human rights norms—"innocent until proven guilty, unless you are Palestinian"—and that accusations of supporting terrorism or posing a foreign-policy threat serve to suppress legitimate political speech. The memoir frames his case as part of a larger pattern of targeting Palestinian identity, activism, and existence itself. HISTORICAL CONTEXT Khalil was born in the Khan al-Shih camp (established 1949 for Nakba refugees) southwest of Damascus. Palestinians in Syria held most citizen rights except voting, office-holding, and multiple property ownership. His family later lived in conditions of restriction in Lebanon's Shatila camp. At Columbia, post-October 7, 2023 campus protests highlighted the university's pro-Israel institutional biases (including ties to Tel Aviv University and donors). His arrest occurred amid broader U.S. efforts to deport pro-Palestine student activists, using foreign-policy and immigration provisions. EVIDENCE AND RESEARCH The memoir draws on Khalil's prison diary, personal correspondence (especially with his wife Noor), court documents, and firsthand observations of detention conditions and legal proceedings. It references his pre-detention work (including at the UN Observer Mission) and critiques of Palestinian political factions. Heiner's review incorporates these elements alongside historical background on Syrian and Lebanese camps and Columbia's institutional context. Independent coverage (Guardian, New York Times, Kirkus) corroborates the core timeline of the 2025 arrest, 104-day detention, and ongoing legal battles. What Price Israel? by Alfred M. Lilienthal

also viewable on Substack:  https://open.substack.com/pub/palestinebookshelf/p/what-price-israel-by-alfred-m-lilienthal Copy of the summary:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KiBSLYqj5qd2TXU4cE9pLfRGg3Pdis7rd5fwQxwx-Tw/edit?pli=1&tab=t.gws9mcgs6xrs MAIN THESIS If Israel is "the Jewish state," Jews who are citizens of other countries are exposed to a charge of dual loyalty. Lilienthal argues that what is called rising antisemitism is largely anti-Israelism, produced by occupation, settlements, and the oppression of Palestinians. Lilienthal considered Judaism  a religion, not a race or a nationality. Hebrew, Israelite, Jew, and Judaism name different groups in different periods and should not be collapsed into one continuous people. Zionism, he says, puts nation above faith, claims the diaspora for an "ingathering," and leaves American Jews with no honorable Zionist position except moving to Israel. HISTORICAL CONTEXT Lilienthal notes that with the return from Babylon in 538 BC: many captives stayed in exile, and Alexandria later held more Judaeans than Jerusalem. He uses this against the claim of an unbroken 2,000-year longing to return. He traces the words Hebrew, Israelite, and Jew to separate periods, and says the later use of "Jew" for anyone practicing Judaism broke any lineal claim to the ancient community in Canaan. The political story runs from Herzl and the Balfour Declaration through the 1947 UN partition vote, the May 1948 declaration, Truman's recognition, and the early-1950s fight over refugees, Jerusalem, and American Jewish allegiance. CONTROVERSY AND RECEPTION Lilienthal, a Jewish lawyer and writer, was attacked by the American Israel lobby after the 1949 article. The review says he later received a death threat he attributed to the Haganah. His denial of a Jewish people or race anticipated later arguments such as Shlomo Sand's, and remains sharply disputed by both Zionist historians and many scholars of Jewish peoplehood. Critics of the book treat the partition-pressure and forced-migration claims as overstated or conspiratorial, and argue that he downplays Arab rejection of partition and the Jewish refugee crisis after World War 2. The Biggest Prison on Earth: A History of the Occupied Territories by Ilan Pappe

also viewable on Substack:  https://open.substack.com/pub/palestinebookshelf/p/the-biggest-prison-on-earth-a-history Copy of the summary:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KiBSLYqj5qd2TXU4cE9pLfRGg3Pdis7rd5fwQxwx-Tw/edit?pli=1&tab=t.n2f2aqj3vf1j MAIN THESIS Pappé is uneasy with the word "occupation." He argues it falsely separates "democratic Israel" from the territories and indirectly legitimizes Israeli rule over the rest of former Mandatory Palestine. He also rejects the legal idea of occupation as temporary. By 1987 it was already described as the longest military occupation, and Israeli governments treated it as open-ended. The policy set in cabinet meetings in the second half of June 1967, and in July and August, is presented as still in force: keep the land, do not carry out another full 1948-style expulsion, and do not grant citizenship.  When mass expulsion was judged impractical, the alternative was containment: Palestinians kept in their areas as inhabitants, not citizens, unable to move, expand, or count in the national demographic balance.  HISTORICAL CONTEXT The book rejects the common claim that 1967 was a war of self-defense to preempt an all-Arab attack.  After Kennedy's assassination, the United States is described as entering a pattern of non-interference, with only polite protest when Israel went further than others accepted—including after the attack on the USS Liberty. Abba Eban is quoted predicting that Washington would endorse, or at least not reject, Israel's unilateral decisions on the territories and Jerusalem. EVIDENCE AND RESEARCH Pappé is presented as relying on Israeli cabinet minutes and other official records from 1967 onward, plus later military and legal material. Many claims are in the speakers' own words: Dayan, Eshkol, Rabin, Aran, Bentov, Gazit, and Sharon-era planning officials. Additional material includes a soldier's account by Amos Kenan (published decades later in Haaretz), a Catholic nun's report on destroyed villages, B'Tselem testimonies, and the Save the Children injury estimate. Gaza: Doctors Under Attack By Karim Shah

also viewable on Substack:  https://open.substack.com/pub/palestinebookshelf/p/gaza-doctors-under-attack-by-karim Copy of the summary:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1KiBSLYqj5qd2TXU4cE9pLfRGg3Pdis7rd5fwQxwx-Tw/edit?pli=1&tab=t.lsgvw3fyttbm MAIN THESIS The film argues that attacks on medical personnel are systematic and intentional, not isolated mistakes or incompetence.   Destroying "human infrastructure" (trained clinicians) sets Palestinian health care back for years, beyond what rebuilding structures can fix.   IDF statements that Israel follows international and Israeli law are seen as false in light of the film's footage and testimony.   HISTORICAL CONTEXT Set after October 2023; all 26 hospitals in Gaza have been attacked.   Places the film in a pattern of UN reporting (cited as a 31 December report), ICC proceedings, and earlier channel videos on prisons and war crimes.   Contrasts protected status of medical convoys and hospitals under international law with the conduct shown in the documentary.   EVIDENCE AND RESEARCH Relies on the documentary's video (convoy footage, hospital scenes), doctor testimony, a UN report on hospital attacks, and Israeli whistleblowers (voices altered).   The discussion rejects "mistake" or "incompetence" explanations by pointing to other Israeli capabilities (e.g., pager operation) and repeated similar incidents.   The discussion also cross-references B'Tselem prison documentation ("Welcome to Hell"). DETAILS OF THE ATTACKS ON HOSPITALS AND STAFF Described pattern: strike surrounding areas, then close with ground troops, sniping, tanks/bulldozers, siege, cutoff of power and water, mass graves dug by doctors in white coats.   Al-Shifa: mass graves, maternity ward hit by a tank shell, no Hamas command center found after capture (per the film/host). Doctors including Dr. Adnan stay in the north, slip evacuation columns, work at Indonesian Hospital then Al-Awda.   After hospitals are emptied or wrecked: detention of health workers, alleged torture, rape, and refusal of treatment by some Israeli medical staff; Israeli social-media and whistleblower material is cited.   Find other summaries like this at Palestine Bookshelf: www.palestinebookshelf.org #EndTheOccupation
