    2389 -Minneapolis Policing; Fight For Public Renewables w/ Michelle S. Phelps, Gabriel Hetland

    It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Michelle Phelps, professor of sociology at the University of Minnesota, to discuss her recent book The Minneapolis Reckoning: Race, Violence, and the Politics of Policing in America. Then she speaks with Gabriel Hetland, associate professor of Latin American, Caribbean & Latino studies at SUNY Albany, to discuss his recent piece on the Build Public Renewables Act (BPRA) published in The Nation entitled "This Solar Panel Kills Fascists." First, Emma runs through updates on Biden’s lame duck action, AOC’s bid for Dem lead on Congressional oversight, Meta’s Trump donation, Fetterman’s support for Trump’s cabinet, Manchin-Sinema hand the NLRB to Trump, Trump’s ICE reform, the Albertsons-Kroger lawsuit, LA’s new minimum wage policy, the NYT Tech Guild, and the UK’s puberty blocker ban, also watching Joy Reid and Elizabeth Warren unpack the dangers of the GOP’s attack on the CFPB. Professor Michelle Phelps then joins, diving right into the start of her research on Minneapolis’ relationship with policing at the first peak of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2016, originally wrapping up in 2019 before the murder of George Floyd – and the global (and Minneapolis-based) abolitionist movement that followed – brought this topic back to the fore of her research, as she unpacks the direct correlation between communities being at heightened risk of police violence also being the ones most at risk of the community violence said police are supposed to prevent, creating a complicated relationship between being the community most in need of public safety reform AND the community most in need of public safety systems writ large. As she walks through Minneapolis’ reaction and overwhelming abolitionist organizing effort in response to the murder of George Floyd, Professor Phelps explores the amorphous relationship between police and crime, and the relationship race and poverty have to both, which puts marginalized communities in such a tight bind when it comes to mitigating all violence, and the ultimate need to rethink where to investment to most benefit public safety. Expanding on the story in Minneapolis, Michelle and Emma unpack the evolution of the political establishment pushback to the abolitionist movement, tackling the relationship between Mayor Frye and the Minneapolis Police Department and the economic incentive of being an entertainment destination for suburbanites, before wrapping up with the ultimate sentencing of killer Cop Derek Chauvin and the minimal reciprocity it provided. Professor Gabriel Hetland then walks Emma through the genuinely incredible “New York State Build Public Renewables Act,” unpacking its plan for a green energy transition and the creation and maintenance of a robust clean energy grid bolstered by union labor, an investment in low and moderate-income workers, and an emphasis on public input and ownership. Expanding on this, Professor Hetland tackles New York’s growing problem of skyrocketing energy costs and the fundamental fact of renewable energy’s lack of profitability, wrapping up by emphasizing the importance of a shift away from private- and profit-driven energy systems. Katie Way then walks Emma through the evolution and eventual decision in the acquittal of Daniel Penny over his killing of Jordan Neely on the NYC subway system, with the prosecution emphasizing the diagnosis of asphyxiation as the cause of death and Penny’s lack of remorse toward and consistent attacks against Neely during interviews, while the defense’s ultimately successful argument hinged on pinning his death on drug abuse and sickle cell disease – a tact often employed by cops, as seen with the murder of George Floyd – and spinning witness accounts and the coroner’s report as the result of “political pressure.” After expanding on the ultimate decision to acquit Penny, Way and Emma step back as they unpack the greater narrative built around this case, with many elites and people on the right coming to the defense of Penny with general anti-homeless and anti-immigrant fear-mongering, zeroing in particularly on Eric Adams’ and his Administration’s use of this story to bolster his police-driven plan to solve (jail) New York City’s unhoused problem (people), as they wrap up the interview with the growing frustration around safe-blue state Democratic Parties’ failure to provide progressive alternatives to conservative fear-mongering around crime and homelessness.     It's News Day Tuesday! Emma speaks with Gregory Brew, analyst with the Eurasia Group's Energy, Climate, & Resources Team, to discuss the fluid situation in Syria now that rebels have taken control of Damascus. Then, she speaks with Thomas Birmingham, reporter and intern at The Nation based in New Haven, to discuss his recent piece entitled "In the US, Tenants Are Usually on Their Own. Can a New National Tenant Union Change That?." First, Emma runs through updates on the charging of the United Healthcare CEO killer, Pete Hegseth’s nomination, Lara Trump’s future in politics, Pete Buttigieg’s potential governor run in Michigan, Tulsi Gabbard’s nomination, Bibi Netanyahu’s corruption case, Ukraine’s defense, Democratic leadership, Boeing layoffs, and wildfires in Malibu, before touching on developing succession drama in the Murdoch family and the right-wing media’s response to the killing of United Healthcare’s CEO. Wrapping up, Thomas and Emma discuss Biden’s role in pushing back against corporate landlords at the tail-end of his tenure and the importance of showcasing proper tenant power as this fight continues.     2384 - South Korea Coup Fails; Syrian Civil War Flares Up w/ John Carl Baker, Giorgio Cafiero

John Carl Baker then joins, diving right into a step-by-step breakdown of how South Korean President Yoon’s attempt (and failure) to declare and enforce martial law last Tuesday developed, beginning with his declaration and assembling of soldiers and police around the National Assembly, through the rampant protests to allow legislatures to enter the assembly to vote down Yoon’s attempted coup, and to the overwhelming 190-0 (in an assembly of 300) veto of the President’s martial law. After briefly touching on the limited vocal support for Yoon from among his conservative allies, Baker steps back to explore the history of South Korea’s conservative ties to dictatorship, beginning with Japan’s brutal 30-year occupation of Korea through the end of the Second World War – an occupation bolstered by cooperation and support from conservative, capitalist, and right-wing Koreans – and through the sequential regimes of Chon Doo-hwan and Park Chung-hee from the 1960s-80s, with Park Geun-hye (daughter of Chung-hee) even rising to the Presidency just a decade ago only to be impeached over her corrupt practices, also unpacking the continued prevalence of authoritarian strains within the South Korean right over the last century. He and Emma then look at the non-coup-related failures of Yoon’s regime that created both his overwhelming unpopularity and the strong opposition he sought to undermine via coup, wrapping up the interview by unpacking the role of the US in backing Yoon’s regime, and what the ideal future of US-Korean relations would look like to the Korean electorate. Professor Giorgio Cafiero then joins, first running through updates on the recent sweeping offensives by Syrian rebels, successfully taking both Aleppo and Hama from the Assad regime, before taking a sharp step back as he walks us through the evolution of the 13-year Civil War, beginning with the Arab spring and spurring the intervention of myriad regional and international actors, through the 2015 intensification of conflict at the hand of increased Russian support for Assad and Iranian-backed groups, and to the lull in tensions that started in 2020, only to break this past week. After parsing through the more specific history of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and the deep and complex ties between the Syrian and Iranian regimes, Emma and Professor Cafiero tackle the prevalent role of external conflicts in how the impact of these Syrian Rebel conquests will unfold, with Iran’s involvement in Hezbollah’s conflict with Israel and Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine giving two major parties conflicting interests.     2382 - Massive Sex Discrimination Case At Supreme Court w/ Ian Millhiser

    It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Ian Millhiser, senior correspondent at Vox, to discuss some of the oral arguments going on in front of the Supreme Court this week. First, Sam runs through updates on South Korean President’s declaration of martial law, Israel’s myriad violations of their ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, the continued gutting of the IRS, US military domestic operations, Scott Walker’s Act 10, the nomination of Kash Patel, Trump’s plurality win, Dinesh D’Souza’s apologies, Trump’s threat to Gaza, US military aid to Ukraine, and Elon’s legal problems, also touching on Democratic Establishment’s staunch opposition to getting money out of primaries. Ian Millhiser then joins, diving right into the impending oral arguments on United States v. Skrmetti, marking the first full hearing on the constitutional question of the government’s ability to restrict the rights of (and explicitly target) transgender people (a term first used at the Supreme Court in 2010), outlining the case’s origin in the extensive red-state backlash to trans rights under the Biden Administration, with myriad prohibitions and restrictions placed on gender-affirming care for people under 18. After stepping back to tackle Skrmetti’s connection to Bostock v Clayton County (2020) and the Court’s decision (held by Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Gorsuch) that any discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation constitutes, no matter what, a form of sex discrimination, Millhiser and Sam parse through the various problems that still face the prosecution, including the extension of this question beyond the workplace, and the added context of exceptions for presumptively unconstitutional governmental actions, whether the Court is likely to get fully on-board with the defense’s conspiracy-centered argument about “trans ideology,” and what a more limited (though still devastating) decision in favor of the State’s right to discriminate against trans people could look like. Next, Ian looks to the FDA v. R.J. Reynolds Vapor Co, a case centered on the FDA’s ability to regulate tobacco and tobacco products, first walking through the history of the FDA’s right to regulate tobacco products, and their initial (and very late) attempts to reign in the ever-growing vaping industry beginning in 2016, before wrapping up by expanding on the role of the Chevron doctrine - the deference of the Courts to federal agencies when it comes to reading the ambiguity of federal legislation – in problematizing what should be an open-and-shut case for the Conservative majority. And in the Fun Half: Sam parses through the stream of denunciations from the past life of Trump’s new Defense Secretary nomination Pete Hegseth, including statements from a former non-profit he worked at, and his mother.
