Cold Plunge Near the Trail? Big Truck Day & Best Drug Store in Redmond?

Welcome to Best of Redmond! Redmond's twice-weekly newsletter and podcast about all the amazing things happening in Redmond for the next seven days! 📰 Willows Road Water Main Project Is Moving Toward Construction Okay, so the City of Redmond is getting ready for a water main project on Willows Road between NE 124th Street and NE 116th Street. The project adds about 1,300 feet of new 12-inch water main and includes pavement restoration along the route. Construction is expected to start this summer and run into summer 2027, with traffic control once the work gets going. The project is still in design, so this isn't a “Willows Road is closed tomorrow” situation. If you use that stretch regularly, keep an eye on the City's updates as construction gets closer. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Big Truck Day at Farrel-McWhirter Big Truck Day is Friday, August 14 from noon to 3 p.m. at Farrel-McWhirter Park, 19545 Redmond Road. Kids ages 1 to 10 can climb around trucks, tractors, construction equipment and other big vehicles, plus there's a tractor-pulled wagon ride and a goody bag. There are two sessions, noon to 1:30 and 1:30 to 3, and registration is required. The current registration page lists the cost at $20 to $24 per child, depending on the rate. Also, there can be some serious honking and sirens, so bring ear protection if your kid isn't into that. 🎵 Trombone Shorty Comes to Marymoor Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue hit Marymoor Amphitheater Wednesday, August 19, with St. Paul and the Broken Bones and Tre Burt. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the show starts at 5:30 p.m. at 6046 West Lake Sammamish Parkway NE. This is a big outdoor concert, so plan for parking and getting through the gates before the music starts. Marymoor says concert parking is $20 per car, unless you've got a seasonal parking pass. If you're taking the light rail, the new Marymoor Village connections make that an option, too. 🍷 National Pinot Noir Day at Pint & Pie National Pinot Noir Day lands Tuesday, August 18, and Pint & Pie in downtown Redmond is using it as an excuse to pour some wine. The event listing says they're open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Northwest Brewing Pint & Pie in Redmond. There's no complicated schedule here, which is kind of the point. Grab dinner, order a glass and celebrate Pinot Noir Day without turning it into a whole production. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Drop-In Play at Marymoor Village Drop-In Indoor Play is Thursday, August 20 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Redmond Community Center at Marymoor Village, 6505 176th Ave NE. It's for kids ages 0 to 6, with toys and indoor space for kids to play while parents get a chance to meet other grown-ups. This one is unsupervised, so an adult has to stay with the child. The center recommends gym clothes and athletic shoes, and the equipment is provided. There's a fee for drop-in play, with fee assistance available by phone. 🎨 Erasure Poetry Workshop with Redmond's Poet Laureate Redmond Poet Laureate Nancy Mburu is leading an Erasure Poetry Workshop Saturday, August 15 for adults 18 and up. The idea is pretty cool: take an existing piece of text and create something new by removing words and reshaping what's left. It's part of Redmond's Community Storytelling Poetry Project, which is collecting local experiences and turning them into poems and multimedia stories. 🥁 Wednesday Drum Circle The Wednesday Drum Circle is August 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Redmond Senior & Community Center, 8703 160th Ave NE. It's an adults-only midday session where you can show up, drum, meet people and basically shake off whatever the morning threw at you. Hand drums and other percussion instruments are available, or you can bring your own. You can register for the month or drop in for the weekly class. If you've got an hour free around lunch and want to do something completely different, this is about as different as it gets. 🐾 Take Your Dog to Marymoor If your dog needs to burn off some serious energy, Marymoor's 40-acre off-leash dog area is open during park hours, from 8 a.m. to dusk, at 6046 West Lake Sammamish Parkway NE. Dogs can run off leash inside the designated area, but outside that zone they need to be on a leash no longer than eight feet. There are trails, water access and plenty of room for dogs to do dog stuff. Marymoor charges a $1 parking fee, too. Bring water, bags and a towel if your dog considers mud a recreational activity. 🚲 Bicycle Bling: Know Your E-Bike Class King County Parks is putting up signs reminding trail users that Class 3 e-bikes and other unauthorized motorized vehicles aren't allowed on regional trails. Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are permitted, but Class 3 bikes can provide pedal assistance up to 28 mph. The county says regional trails have a 15-mph speed limit, too, and deputies are starting with education and warnings. So if you've got an e-bike, figure out which class it is before you hit the trail. And whatever you're riding, slow down when the trail gets busy. 🕰️ Redmond History Minute Okay, it's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond. Bill Brown is the famous 30-year mayor, but who was Redmond’s first mayor after incorporation in 1912? A) Luke McRedmond B) Fred Reil C) Georgia Erskine D) James Clise Answer: B – Fred Reil Funny one: A – Luke McRedmond (the guy who got the name, but not the job) Story: Fred Reil was Redmond’s first mayor, elected after the town finally hit 300 residents and incorporated. Bill Brown comes later—and steals most of the spotlight—but Reil is the one who got the first crack at running a newly incorporated Redmond. Answer revealed at the bottom of this newsletter. 🔮 Redmond Rumor Mill Okay, here's a fun one. We've been hearing that a recovery-focused gym could be looking at space somewhere near the Burke-Gilman Trail. Think cold plunge, sauna, compression boots and the kind of stuff people use after absolutely destroying themselves on a bike ride. We don't know the business, we don't know the location, and we don't know if it's happening at all. That's why it's a rumor. Would you actually use a place like that in Redmond? If you've got a guess or have heard something, head to our Facebook page at facebook.com/BestOfRedmond and drop it in the "Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses" post. 🗳️ Your Picks: Best drug store in Redmond Alright, that's it for this week. ZZ Top and Cheap Trick are at Marymoor Live Tuesday, August 11, with doors at 4 p.m. and the show starting at 6 p.m. at Marymoor Park, 6046 West Lake Sammamish Parkway NE. You’re getting two bands with a whole lot of recognizable songs between them, so this is more crank-it-up than sit-quietly kind of night. If you’re going, give yourself extra time for parking and getting through the entrance. And maybe don’t expect to hear a lot of new stuff. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Outdoor Family Story Time at the Library If you’ve got little kids, the Redmond Library is taking story time outside Thursday, August 13, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. It’s on the grassy area between the library and City Hall at 15990 NE 85th Street. One thing to know: there can be some serious honking and sirens, so bring hearing protection if your kid is sensitive to loud noises. 🐾 Sniffer Dog Day at Pickles Playland Got a dog who thinks every walk is a full-blown investigation? Pickles Playland has Sniffer Dog Day Friday, August 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its Redmond daycare. If your dog loves sniffing everything, this one should be right up their alley. 🚲 Redmond Is Adding More Bike Parking Here’s some new bike news for downtown Redmond. The city is planning two additional locations for on-demand bicycle lockers, with installation expected by the end of summer. One will be near 164th Avenue NE and the west end of the downtown light rail station, close to Redmond Town Center. The other is planned near 161st Avenue NE, close to Downtown Park. The lockers give riders a secure, weather-protected place to stash bikes, scooters and gear. If you ride downtown, keep an eye out for these. Not having to drag your bike into every store could be pretty handy. ✨ Harry Potter DroneArt Show at Marymoor Okay, this is a little different. The Harry Potter DroneArt Show takes over the sky above Marymoor Park Friday and Saturday, August 14 and 15, with the show starting at 9:15 p.m. at 6046 West Lake Sammamish Parkway NE. It’s a free celebration of local food, farms and sustainability, with a farmers market, local chefs and restaurants, cooking demos, live music, farm animals, tree climbing, a street-band parade and a beverage garden. Basically, there’s a lot going on, so you can make this as short or as long a stop as you want. Bring the family, wear shoes you don’t mind getting dirty, and leave some room for food. 📚 EnGAYging in Sapphistry at the Redmond Library If you’re looking for something a little quieter Sunday, the Redmond Library has EnGAYging in Sapphistry from 2 to 3 p.m. August 16 at 15990 NE 85th Street. The club normally practices Mondays and Thursdays, but Thursday practices have shifted to meet days for the season. Question: Redmond's Derby Days bicycle race started as a fundraiser in 1939 to buy what for the town? A) A new water tower B) Christmas decorations and school athletic gear C) A town clock D) A public library Answer revealed at the bottom of this newsletter. 🔮 Redmond Rumor Mill Here's one we've been hearing from a couple of different directions. Sources say a boutique running club could be looking at a space on Cleveland Street. From what we've heard, it wouldn't be just a running shoe store or just a gym. Think locker rooms, a wall of running gear, post-run coffee, and organized group runs that make it feel more like a club than a retail shop. Now, we haven't been able to confirm any of that yet, and we don't know if a lease has been signed or if talks are still in the early stages. But if it does happen, would you join a place like that, or stick with your current running group? If you've got a guess or have heard something, head to our Facebook page at facebook.com/BestOfRedmond and drop it in the "Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses" post. 🗳️ Your Picks: Best Barber in Redmond Alright, that's it for this week. What started as a practical way for the community to raise a little money eventually grew into one of Redmond's longest-running traditions. It's a great reminder that some of Redmond's biggest annual events started with neighbors simply pitching in to make the community a little better.

She'll be joined by local author Elaine U. Cho for a conversation at Brick & Mortar Books beginning at 6:30 p.m. If you're into science fiction, fantasy, or just enjoy hearing authors talk about the writing process, this should be a fun evening. These events often fill up, so arriving a little early isn't a bad idea. 🏛️ Get Answers from Labor & Industries If you've got questions about wages, paid sick leave, workplace safety, or an L&I claim, here's a chance to talk to someone face-to-face. The Washington Department of Labor & Industries is holding a free information desk at the Redmond Library on Wednesday, August 5, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome, interpreter services are available if needed, and small business owners can also get information about workplace requirements. Sometimes it's easier getting answers from a real person than searching online. 🎵 Dark Star Orchestra Heads to Chateau Ste. Michelle If classic Grateful Dead music is more your style, Dark Star Orchestra takes the stage at Chateau Ste. Michelle on Friday, August 7, with the show starting at 6:00 p.m. The band is known for recreating legendary Grateful Dead concerts note for note while still adding a little personality of its own. Gates open about ninety minutes before showtime, giving everyone plenty of time to settle in before the music begins. Bring a few friends and enjoy another great summer concert close to home. 🔮 Redmond Rumor Mill Okay... here's one we've been hearing from a few different people. Rumor has it a Persian bakery and café could be looking at a space near Redmond Town Center. We've heard talk of fresh bread, saffron lattes, and rose water pastries, and apparently the owner has built a loyal following selling at local farmers markets. We haven't been able to confirm any of it yet, so for now it's still just a rumor. But if it turns out to be true, this could become a pretty popular stop for coffee and pastries. If you've got a guess or have heard something, head to our Facebook page at facebook.com/BestOfRedmond and drop it in the "Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses" post. 🗳️ Your Picks: Best Walking Trail in Redmond Alright, that's it for this week. Secret Chef Dinners? Redmond Arts Festival & Best Fruit Stand in Redmond?

Welcome to Best of Redmond! Redmond's twice-weekly newsletter and podcast about all the amazing things happening in Redmond for the next seven days! 🎨 Redmond Arts Festival Takes Over Town Center The 15th Annual Redmond Arts Festival is back Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 2 at Redmond Town Center, and this is probably the biggest thing happening around town this weekend. More than 60 Pacific Northwest artists will be there selling original work, and you can actually meet the people who made it. They've also got live music and hands-on art activities for kids throughout the weekend. Admission is free, so walk around, grab something to eat, and make an afternoon out of it. 🎷 Jump In at Open Jazz Night Open Jazz Night is happening Thursday, July 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and you can either join the band or just hang out and listen. Bassist John Roth hosts the night, and they've got an upright piano plus a microphone for singers. Musicians of all experience levels are welcome, so you don't need to be some kind of jazz legend to participate. Not interested in getting onstage? That's completely fine too. Show up early, grab a seat, and enjoy a pretty relaxed Thursday night. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Yoga Story Time at the Library Yoga Story Time is happening Friday, July 31 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Redmond Library for kids ages two and older. Certified instructor Neha from Soul Lumos combines a children's story with simple, beginner-friendly yoga movements, so the kids get to use their bodies and their imaginations. A caregiver needs to stay, but registration isn't required. Bring a yoga mat or a large towel if you've got one. They’ll have a few extra mats available, but probably not enough for everybody. 🐾 Meet the Pigs at Farrel-McWhirter The pigs at Farrel-McWhirter Park are getting their own meet-and-greet Sunday, August 2 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Volunteers and park docents will introduce everyone to the farm's resident pigs, share a few animal facts, answer questions, and explain how the park's farm programs work. The event is free and should be fun for kids, animal people, or anybody who's somehow lived in Redmond for years without meeting the pigs. Advance registration is requested, so get your name on the list before heading over. 🕰️ Redmond History Minute Okay, it's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond. What major transportation project in 1916 permanently lowered Lake Washington and helped end the region's steamboat era? A) Opening of the Lake Washington Ship Canal and Ballard Locks B) Completion of SR-520 C) Construction of the I-90 floating bridge D) Arrival of the railroad Answer revealed at the bottom of this newsletter. 🔮 Redmond Rumor Mill So there's this rumor floating around Old Redmond about a possible chef's counter pop-up incubator. The idea would be a shared space where local chefs take turns hosting limited, ticketed dinners with a completely different menu every time. No permanent restaurant menu. Maybe not even a sign out front. Just a mailing list, a handful of seats, and a new chef running the show for each dinner. We don't know whether this is real yet. Have you heard anything about it? If you've got a guess or have heard something, head to our Facebook page at facebook.com/BestOfRedmond and drop it in the "Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses" post. 🗳️ Your Picks: Best Fruit Stand in Redmond Alright, that's it for this week. Head on over to facebook.com/BestOfRedmond, find the post called "Your Picks," and drop your vote in the comments. We want to know who you think is the best fruit stand in Redmond. 📻 Don't Miss the Podcast If you enjoyed this newsletter, you're gonna love the companion podcast. Find it at bestofredmond.com. We'll see you in the next one... or maybe before then, walking around Redmond. 🎯 History Minute Answer The answer is A – Opening of the Lake Washington Ship Canal and Ballard Locks When the Lake Washington Ship Canal opened in 1916, the water level in Lake Washington dropped by about nine feet. That permanently changed shorelines around the Eastside, dried up the Black River, and connected the lake to Puget Sound through the Ballard Locks. It also helped bring an end to the steamboat era, which had once been one of the main ways people and goods moved around the region. The project completely reshaped the geography of the area, and its effects are still visible today.

Just remember to skip the outside alcohol and clean up before you head home. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream at the Library This is one of those library events that kids will be talking about on the ride home. Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream Science is happening Thursday, July 30, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Redmond Library, where you'll watch liquid nitrogen experiments and see ice cream made right in front of you before getting a sample yourself. No registration is required, but space is limited, so getting there a little early is probably a good idea. 🧘 Free Yoga at Marymoor Park If you've been meaning to stretch a little more this summer, here's a good excuse. YogaSix Redmond is hosting a free outdoor yoga class on Thursday, July 30 at the Velodrome Picnic Area in Marymoor Park. It's open to all skill levels, so whether you've been doing yoga for years or you're trying it for the first time, you can just show up with a mat and join in. Bring a friend or the whole family if you'd like. It's free, but registering ahead of time is a smart idea so you'll get updates if the weather or location changes at the last minute. 🐴 Meet the Farm Animals at Farrel-McWhirter Park If you've got kids who love animals, Farrel-McWhirter Park is doing a one-hour farm animal program on Thursday, July 30, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. It's at Farrel-McWhirter Park, 19545 Redmond Road, where families can get up close with some of the park's animals and learn a little about how they're cared for. It's a nice way to spend an hour outside without having to drive out to a farm, and younger kids usually have a blast meeting the animals in person. Show up a few minutes early since these programs tend to fill up once they get started. 🚲 Pie Ride on the Eastside Trails If riding your bike and rewarding yourself with pie sounds like a good plan, this one's for you. The LUMPS Redmond Eastside Pie Ride rolls out on Wednesday, July 29, at 11:10 a.m. from the East Lake Sammamish Trail near Whole Foods in Redmond. Riders head along the Sammamish River and Bear Creek Trails to the Northshore Senior Center in Bothell for homemade pie or cookies before taking a small detour on the ride back to burn off at least a few of those calories. The pace is moderate, there's a required safety briefing before the group leaves, and you'll want to bring water and be ready to ride on time. ⚔️ Summer Swords & Spirits for Adults If you've ever wanted to try fencing, or you already fence and just want a fun night with other adults, Summer Swords & Spirits is happening Saturday at 5:00 p.m. This is a 21-and-over event with a fencing tournament followed by a relaxed social gathering. Registration is $35, and everyone is asked to bring a dish or snack for the potluck. There will be alcoholic drinks for those who want them, plus non-alcoholic options, so it's just as much about hanging out as it is about the competition. If you're planning to fence, sign up ahead of time so organizers know how to set up the tournament divisions. 🐦 Learn the Secrets of Redmond's Woodpeckers Here's something a little different if you like getting outside. The Eastside Audubon Society is hosting Woodpeckers: Behaviors and Habitats at Marymoor Park on Saturday, August 1, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. You'll learn how to identify local woodpeckers by both their markings and the sound of their drumming, plus hear why these birds can pound on trees all day without giving themselves a headache. The class is geared toward adults, but families are welcome and kids under 12 attend free with an adult. Registration is required since the group is capped at about a dozen people, so don't wait if this sounds like your kind of Saturday morning. 🐾 Bring Your Dog to Bark & Bourbon If your dog gets more excited about meeting new friends than you do, this one's worth a look. Bark & Bourbon is happening on Sunday, August 2, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Northwest Spirits in Woodinville. Bring your pup and they'll get complimentary pup cups, treats, and a bandana while you enjoy the Happier Hour menu. They also run a "Goodest Doggo" contest, with the winner chosen by Instagram votes and a prize for both the pup and their owner. It's an easy way to wrap up the weekend if you're looking for a dog-friendly afternoon close to Redmond. 🕰️ Redmond History Minute Okay, it's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond. Which company founded in Redmond made thrusters used on NASA Mars missions? A) United Control B) Rocket Research Company (Aerojet Rocketdyne) C) Microsoft Research D) Blue Origin Eastside Answer revealed at the bottom of this newsletter. 🔮 Redmond Rumor Mill Here's one that's been popping up in conversations around town. We've heard a Japanese convenience store concept could be headed to the Redmond Town Center area. Think onigiri, katsu sandwiches, Pocari Sweat, and other grab-and-go favorites. From what we've heard, it wouldn't be a full restaurant, more like a curated convenience store, and people keep mentioning the nearby Microsoft campus as part of the reason it makes sense. We haven't been able to confirm any of it yet, so for now it's still just a rumor. What would you hope to see if this ends up happening? If you've got a guess or have heard something, head to our Facebook page at facebook.com/BestOfRedmond and drop it in the "Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses" post. 🗳️ Your Picks: Best Ice Cream in Redmond Alright, that's it for this week. Head on over to facebook.com/BestOfRedmond, find the post called "Your Picks," and drop your vote in the comments. We want to know who you think is the best ice cream in Redmond. 📻 Don't Miss the Podcast If you enjoyed this newsletter, you're gonna love the companion podcast. Find it at bestofredmond.com. We'll see you in the next one... or maybe before then, walking around Redmond. 🎯 History Minute Answer The answer is B – Rocket Research Company (Aerojet Rocketdyne). Redmond's tech story didn't begin with software. Rocket Research Company designed and built propulsion systems that were eventually used on NASA Mars missions, helping establish the city's reputation for serious engineering long before it became known around the world for Microsoft. It's a fun reminder that Redmond has been home to big ideas for a lot longer than most people realize.

Best of all, it's free, family friendly, and easy to pair with breakfast or shopping afterward. 🚲 Bicycle Bling: Bike Season Is in Full Swing With Derby Days almost here, bikes are front and center again in Redmond. The festival features the nation's oldest continuous community bike race, and you'll see riders of every age enjoying the weekend festivities. Earlier this summer, Eastside residents won rebates of up to $2,000 through the Pedal Forward Eastside program, helping more people make the switch to e-bikes. And if your own bike needs a little attention before the weekend, local shops like Element Cycles are helping riders stay ready for another busy summer on the trails. 🧠 Trivia Night at Marymoor Village If random facts are your thing, grab a few friends and head to the Redmond Community Center at Marymoor Village on Thursday, July 23, from 5:30 until 7:30 PM. The Redmond Youth Partnership Advisory Committee is hosting a free community Trivia Night with questions covering everything from pop culture to who-knows-what. There will be prizes, plenty of laughs, and it's open to all ages, although kids under 12 need an adult with them. Not a bad way to kick off the weekend a little early. 🎨 Let's Make Art Together The Redmond Library is hosting Let's Make Art! Adult Art Club on Sunday, July 26, from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM. Bring whatever creative project you're already working on, whether it's painting, knitting, drawing, or something completely different, and spend a few hours hanging out with other local artists. There's no registration required, and all experience levels are welcome. Sometimes it's just easier to finish a project when you're surrounded by other people making things too. 🐾 Meet Some Future Best Friends If you've been thinking about adopting a dog, Saturday could be your lucky day. Church of Pug Rescue will be at the Woodinville PetSmart from noon until 3:00 PM with adoptable pugs, French bulldogs, and other small-breed dogs looking for new homes. Even if you're not quite ready to adopt, you can learn about fostering, meet the rescue volunteers, or bring along a new or gently used leash or harness to donate. You never know... your next best friend might already be waiting. 🕰️ Redmond History Minute Okay, it's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond. The Old Redmond Schoolhouse, built in 1922, today serves mainly as a: A) Private office complex B) Community center C) Brewery D) Bed-and-breakfast Answer revealed at the bottom of this newsletter. 🔮 Redmond Rumor Mill Here's one we've been hearing that has us curious. Word is the mobile espresso cart that's been serving Marymoor Park events for the past couple of seasons may be getting a permanent home. The rumor is they're in talks for a kiosk near the park entrance, serving coffee year-round with a focus on single-origin pour-overs. We haven't been able to confirm any of that yet, so for now it's just neighborhood chatter. The big question is... could Marymoor finally be getting a permanent coffee stop? If you've got a guess or have heard something, head to our Facebook page at facebook.com/BestOfRedmond and drop it in the "Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses" post. 🗳️ Your Picks: Best Dog-Friendly Business in Redmond Alright, that's it for this week. Head on over to facebook.com/BestOfRedmond, find the post called "Your Picks," and drop your vote in the comments. Find it at bestofredmond.com. We'll see you in the next one... or maybe before then, walking around Redmond. 🎯 History Minute Answer The answer is B – Community center. The Old Redmond Schoolhouse educated local students for about 75 years before getting a second life as a community gathering place. It's one of the few historic buildings in town that's still serving the community every day instead of simply becoming a landmark. And yes... if you guessed C) Brewery, you're definitely not the first person to wish that were true.
