How to Stand Up to a Bully (The Bully is China)

“We’ll defend ourselves. If you defend and help us, good. If you don’t, well, too bad. We wanted to show everybody that we are capable and we are willing to stand up for ourselves.” “The Philippines did it by the book. Like, we don’t have a robust military. We don’t have fancy jets. We didn’t have a very shiny, big, hulking Navy. We used to joke that our air force was more air than force.” “So the Philippines said, OK, we’ll go to court. We’ll argue before these judges and then may the best country with the better claim based on international law. May they win.” “The Philippines, we are fighting for an international system that is governed by laws, by international laws, by norms, by agreed norms, by treaties, not by the law of the jungle.” Michel Andre P. del Rosario is the former Assistant Secretary for the Presidential Communications Office of the Philippines. He spearheaded efforts across government to highlight China’s illegal, aggressive, coercive, and deceptive actions in the West Philippine Sea, and to signal to the world’s democracies that the Philippines would stand up for the rule of law with or without international help. Andre now leads the Center for Information Resilience and Integrity Studies (CIRIS), an organization focused on promoting societal resilience and preserving information integrity.
