Five Doctors Said No and She Lost Her Legs

A 21-year-old in the UK is facing a double leg amputation after her legs locked bent backward at a 45-degree angle — for eight years. She was turned away by five surgeons before one agreed to help, by which point the damage was irreversible.  Dr. Chang and Jackie break down what went wrong, who bears responsibility, and why a delay in care can turn a treatable problem into a permanent one. Jackie raises the anonymous question that frames everything: "I've told four different doctors something is wrong and they keep telling me it's anxiety. How do I keep advocating for myself?" Dr. Chang addresses why women's health in particular remains understudied and why two things can be true at once — you can have anxiety and a real problem. The conversation ends with practical advice: find doctors who listen, use the internet to locate specialists, and never stop pushing. Source: People, Locked and Turned Upwards at a 45-Degree Angle. Looksmaxxing: How Far Is Too Far?

A 19-year-old emails every surgeon he can find: he has been buying testosterone online for a year, he wants a jaw implant, and maybe rib removal. They all either ignore him or say no, and he wants to know whether he is being failed by gatekeepers or protected from something he cannot see. Dr. Chang and Jackie say it plainly: the no is the protection. The conversation runs through the looksmaxxing world young men are living in right now, where an influencer like Clavicular is told his nose, jaw, and bones are all fixable with a syringe, a hammer, and enough discipline. They get into bone smashing (punching your own face to remodel it), the danger of unregulated testosterone at an age when your body should be making plenty of its own, and the Dr. Miami rhinoplasty that got live-streamed as entertainment. Jackie explains the red flag that ends the consult before it starts, and Dr. Chang makes the case for why saying no is the mark of a good surgeon, not a bad salesman. When The One Who Loves You Can't Handle Your Decision

The second a husband sits in on the pre-op, the implant size goes up. Esthetician Carey has watched it happen for seven years at Congressional Plastic Surgery — and she's never once had a woman come back to a post-op wishing she'd gone smaller. But the same companion chair that produces a cheerleader can also produce someone who quietly takes the decision over. Dr. Chang and Carey get into the strangest dynamic in a cosmetic surgery practice: what happens when the people who love someone can't handle her decision, or try to steer it. They frame it around Sharon Stone, who recently revealed that when her doctor recommended a double mastectomy, the person who fell apart wasn't her — it was her husband, who called it ridiculous and walked out. (They're divorced now.) Then they take an anonymous question from a woman whose husband says he doesn't want her to change, and work through how to tell genuine concern from control: the partner who fixates on lift scars until she second-guesses herself, the Botox he'll never notice but the charge he will, and the appointment that got easier the moment one husband stopped coming. E! News, Sharon Stone ended her marriage over her husband's reaction to her mastectomy decision HOSTS Carey McLaughlin Licensed Master Esthetician With a Bachelor of Science degree from Frostburg State University and a Master Esthetics education from the Esthetic Institute in Vienna, VA, Carey brings both clinical knowledge and hands-on expertise to her role as Master Aesthetician. Since joining the practice in 2019, she's been dedicated to helping patients feel confident and cared for—whether through customized skincare treatments or supporting them before and after surgery. When not in the office, you can find Carey in a Pilates class or catching up on the latest reality shows on Bravo. Rib Remodeling Sounds Insane, But Is It?

Take a small instrument, score the bottom three ribs until they crack, then live in a corset for twelve weeks while your skeleton heals into a narrower shape. It sounds extreme. Dr. Christopher Chang’s reaction? It’s not that far from reshaping a forehead or a brow bone — something surgeons do every single day. Jackie brings the trend straight off TikTok, where rib remodeling — the RibXcar procedure out of South America — is racking up jaw-dropping before-and-afters and earning the nickname “the year of the waist.” Dr. Chang breaks down what actually happens to your floating ribs, why a piezoelectric device makes the incision little more than a puncture, and what a global study’s 3.7% complication rate really means once you separate a bruise from a pneumothorax. He also answers the woman whose waist won’t drop below 20 inches no matter how hard she trains — and explains why chasing a specific number might be the real mistake. Plus, the Met Gala corset question everyone’s asking. The $60k Viral Chemical Peel From Hell

A peel that promises no downtime sounds like the safe choice. Dr. Christopher Chang and Jackie explain why it can be the opposite — and why the moment a chemical hits the skin and turns frosty white, the person holding the brush has seconds to decide whether they are looking at the result or the start of a problem. They run through every depth of peel, from over-the-counter salicylic acid to the phenol and croton oil peels going viral on TikTok that look like someone peeling off a Halloween mask. Dr. Chang explains what is happening underneath: a peel is a calculated injury, and a deep one is a chemical burn the body has to heal. The conversation gets into why California estheticians are licensed by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology — the same agency that oversees hairstylists — and what it means when a med spa’s medical director signs off on charts from fifty miles away. And the viral story of influencer Victoria Nelson, who says a routine Beverly Hills facial ended with an unplanned chemical peel and more than $60k in corrective treatments. Will My Surgeon Talk About Me on TikTok?

A woman writes in worried that her plastic surgeon — who runs one of those TikTok accounts that pick apart celebrity faces — might end up doing the same to her. Dr. Chang's answer is shorter than expected: smart surgeons are humble surgeons, and humble surgeons don't tear other doctors' work apart on the internet. Dr. Chang and Jackie go through the week's biggest celebrity surgery moments — the fisheye-lens Olivia Wilde photo that got turned into a Gollum meme, the Kris Jenner "furious facelift" headlines that ended up way overblown, and the Denise Richards facelift coverage that has plastic surgeons fighting each other online about who's really qualified to call themselves a facelift expert.  They get into why the Kris Jenner story is actually useful for setting expectations — your face isn't going to stay tight and swollen forever, and a year out it'll look different than it did at month one — why doctors publicly criticizing each other's work is what Dr. Chang calls "trashy," and why the New York Times piece framing TikTok face breakdowns as a credentialed new way to judge women's looks misses what's really going on.  Plus: news anchors covering bruising on camera, and the real reason men don't talk about their plastic surgery. She Went In For a Mommy Makeover And Never Came Home

A woman calling for her pre-op consult had one question before anything else: is the surgeon going to leave as soon as the surgery's over? Jackie's answer was no. But the question itself is now what every woman wants answered — because in Cincinnati, a 47-year-old mom of three went in for a mommy makeover and never came home. Rachel Tussey documented her surgery prep on TikTok for weeks before going in at Journey Light Surgery Center in February. Her husband was told everything went great. Minutes later she was unresponsive. Dr. Chang and Jackie pull apart what the family was actually told — "without oxygen for six minutes" — and why that phrase probably came from the hospital later, not the recovery room.  They get into why anesthesia is the layer of surgery you should trust most rather than fear, how pain medicine absorbing too quickly in fat can change a recovery room in seconds, who's actually at risk for a clot or embolism, and why outpatient surgery is not the safety downgrade people assume. Plus: the surgeon is now suing the surgery center. Your "Board Certified" Surgeon Might Not Be Who You Think

A woman in Richmond went in to have her implants removed. She came out of surgery without her breasts. Dr. Chang and Jackie pull apart what actually happened — and what it reveals about how the words "board certified" can mean almost anything. The anonymous question this episode answers: how do you evaluate a surgeon when your insurance only covers a handful of options? Dr. Chang breaks down the difference between the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the half-dozen other "boards" out there (yes, he could make one called the Board of Chang Plastic Surgery), why breast cancer care needs two surgeons with opposite goals, and the quiet local nurse network that already knows who's good. Jackie weighs in on what it feels like in an OR when something is going wrong. Plus: how Dr. Sasa Grae Espino reportedly kept operating while the Virginia Medical Board sat on multiple complaints, before 29 women filed suit.
