    THE LAC-MÉGANTIC RAIL DISASTER

Episode 236 | Historical Events In this History episode we focus on the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster of July 6th, 2013 — a 73-car freight train carrying 7.7 million liters of Bakken crude oil that rolled unmanned down a hill in Quebec and derailed in the center of a town at 105 kilometers per hour, killing 47 people and destroying half of Lac-Mégantic's downtown. The fire burned for five days. The train's engineer had gone to a hotel for the night. A locomotive fire brought out local firefighters who, in extinguishing it, inadvertently disabled the air brakes that had been holding the train on the grade. We examine the specific regulatory conditions that produced the disaster: a railway with a weak safety culture and a practice of leaving single-operator trains unattended on grades overnight; DOT 111 tank cars that regulators and safety advocates had been raising concerns about for years; Bakken crude oil shipped under protocols designed for heavier, less volatile crude; and a regulatory system that required safety management plans without verifying whether they were adequate. Three employees were charged with criminal negligence and acquitted in 2018. The Canadian government announced a bypass route around Lac-Mégantic's town center in 2023. It is under construction as of mid-2026. This podcast features narration with a synthetic AI voice.
