NASCAR In Charlotte: Sam Mayer Calls Out NASCAR’s O’Reilly Drivers

Sam Mayer calls out NASCAR’s O’Reilly drivers, and Garrett Smithley responds with a different perspective on equipment, resources, and the work behind the finishing order. Chase Holden and Garrett Smithley break down the Blue Cross NC 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on this week’s episode of RaceSpace Podcast. Episode 30 opens with a rainy Charlotte weekend on the oval—not the Roval—and the busy week that came before it. Garrett fills in on Carson Hocevar’s mini-golf team, we head to Corey LaJoie’s Kickball Klassic, and Shane van Gisbergen shows what he can do with a kickball. There’s Bobby Labonte bringing his own putter, Kaden Honeycutt’s competitive streak, Gio Ruggiero’s fan-made artwork, and more golf with Garsen at The 500 Club. Then Garrett takes you inside a difficult night in the No. 0 Mullis Construction Chevrolet. He explains the handling problems, the brake issue the team found afterward, and why racing without practice left them chasing adjustments. He also shares a post-race mouthguard report showing a nearly 10 G non-crash event, opening a discussion about head-motion data and NASCAR’s safety research. Corey Day wins again after Las Vegas, tightening the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series championship battle with Sheldon Creed, Jesse Love, and Justin Allgaier. Four drivers leave Charlotte separated by 15 points, with Phoenix next and Talladega, Martinsville, and Homestead still ahead. Sam Mayer’s post-race comments lead to a bigger question: how much does a finishing position really tell you about a driver? Garrett discusses the differences in equipment and funding, the effort throughout the field, and what a hypothetical ride swap might reveal about the drivers. In the Bank of America 400 recap, Chase Briscoe earns back-to-back Cup wins while Christopher Bell is left with a narrow defeat. We discuss Denny Hamlin’s pit-road setback, Kyle Larson’s growing Chase lead, and why beating someone on track does not always mean gaining on them in points. The Truck Series discussion covers Layne Riggs’ bounce-back win and his championship fight with Kaden Honeycutt. We close with Garrett’s firsthand reflections on Kyle Busch’s Celebration of Life at Charlotte, Samantha Busch’s words, Brexton’s burnout, and what the evening meant to the NASCAR community before looking ahead to Phoenix Raceway. Kyle Larson Wins Gateway—18 Cautions Shake Up the NASCAR Chase

Kyle Larson wins at Gateway after 18 cautions turn the NASCAR Cup race into a survival test. His 51-race winless streak is over—and the Chase fight heads to Bristol with Larson nine points behind Denny Hamlin. Chase Holden and NASCAR driver Garrett Smithley are back for RACESPACE Episode 26, breaking down the Enjoy Illinois 300 at World Wide Technology Raceway: Larson’s four-tire call, Joey Logano’s speed, Alex Bowman’s emotional runner-up finish, and the brake failures that disrupted the championship battle. Was this old-school NASCAR at its best, or did the chaos go too far? The NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series delivered its own drama: Jesse Love’s first win of 2026, Sheldon Creed taking the points lead, a major pit-road pileup, and another clash between Corey Day and William Sawalich that also affected Justin Allgaier. Garrett brings the view from the pit box—not the driver’s seat this weekend—as Myatt Snider races the No. 0 SS-GreenLight Racing / BRK Racing Chevrolet to a lead-lap P25. Hear Garrett’s account of the brake-balance issues, what the team learned, and why he is looking for redemption when he returns to the car at Bristol. We also discuss Brennan Poole’s Spire Motorsports Truck Series opportunity at Kansas, new partners for the No. 0, and a little NFL Sunday and fantasy-football talk. Recording update — September 15, 2026: NASCAR issued no penalty for the Sawalich/Day Gateway incident. Zane Smith’s September 14 update said he was doing well and ready for Bristol. Those developments update the uncertainty discussed during recording. NASCAR Darlington: Keselowski Warns Hocevar, Bell Wins Southern 500

Brad Keselowski says Carson Hocevar’s day is coming after Hocevar spun the No. 6 at Darlington. Chase Holden and NASCAR driver Garrett Smithley break down the growing Keselowski–Hocevar feud, Christopher Bell’s Southern 500 win, Kyle Larson’s late tire gamble and the opening race of NASCAR’s 2026 Chase. RACESPACE Episode 25 begins inside the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series garage. Garrett takes us through his P25 run in the No. 0 SS GreenLight Racing / BRK Racing Chevrolet, including the difference between the team’s owned and leased engines, the missing torque off Darlington’s corners, a tight-handling race car, the changing conditions after the lightning delay and the physical demands of racing against the wall in the South Carolina heat. Garrett also explains the Joey Gase incident, why Darlington forces drivers to race the track instead of each other and how the No. 0 escaped a chaotic night with only a small Darlington stripe. Chase and Garrett examine the car’s stronger long-run speed, a possible alternate tire strategy and new RaceTek tire-falloff metrics used to evaluate performance throughout the field. Then the guys celebrate Sheldon Creed’s second career NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series victory and first win at Darlington. Creed controlled the final run, beat Corey Day and left the Chase opener only seven points behind Justin Allgaier. They also discuss Anthony Alfredo’s Stage 2 win, Parker Retzlaff’s championship opportunity and why Creed could become especially dangerous later in the Chase at Homestead. The O’Reilly conversation also covers Alpha Prime Racing’s move to Ford. Chase and Garrett discuss what the 2027 manufacturer change could mean for the team, Brennan Poole, Lavar Scott and Ford’s return to a larger presence in NASCAR’s second national series. In the Cup Series recap, Christopher Bell ends a 33-race winless streak by passing Kyle Larson late to win his first Southern 500. Chase and Garrett explain the difference between Larson’s worn tires and Bell’s fresh rubber, why the No. 5 stayed out, and how Bell moved to within 12 points of Chase leader Denny Hamlin. The guys also cover Ty Gibbs driving from 28th to second, Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney, Chase Briscoe, Bubba Wallace, William Byron’s engine failure and why Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota appear to be peaking at exactly the right time. Then the conversation turns to Brad Keselowski and Carson Hocevar. Chase and Garrett examine what led to the Lap 107 contact, Keselowski’s “watch out, Carson” warning, Hocevar’s unapologetic response and whether the veteran driver will retaliate at World Wide Technology Raceway or wait for a more calculated opportunity later in the NASCAR Chase. Finally, Scott McLaughlin wins the IndyCar season finale at Laguna Seca, Alex Palou celebrates his fifth championship, Scott Dixon prepares to move from Chip Ganassi Racing to Arrow McLaren, Conor Daly lands a full-time 2027 ride with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and Josh Berry is announced as Legacy Motor Club’s new No. 42 driver. Chase and Garrett discuss SVG’s Stage 1 win, Preece’s Stage 2 recovery, the late fuel decision, RFK Racing’s execution and the overtime finish that changed the championship field. They also debate NASCAR’s revised Daytona superspeedway package, a race that produced 41 lead changes among 22 drivers, the role of fuel-saving strategy and whether shorter stages could create more full-throttle racing.
