The barrels are non-varnished so the tobacco can breathe, and the inside is heavily charred, creating charcoal that helps filter and round out rough edges. What we rely on is the residue in the wood, the pressure inside the barrel, and the natural heat that builds as the leaf goes through another fermentation.
