Home Assistant What’s New October 2026: Vector Maps, Trigger IDs, Dashboard Conditions & Local Energy

AI disclosure: This episode was created using artificial intelligence. Anna and Jan are fictional AI hosts with synthetic voices. Home Assistant 2026.10 focuses on making location, automation, and smart home controls easier to understand. The episode covers the new vector-based map experience, clearer profiles, and visibility improvements across dashboards and settings. You'll learn how map markers, zones, people, and devices become easier to read, including fallback support for older dashboard tablets. You'll find out how the new trigger ID interface helps automations react differently based on what started them, without manual YAML. The episode also explains conditional dashboard cards, Home dashboard alerts, ESPHome outgoing connections, Modbus visibility, and local solar and energy integrations such as SolarEdge Modbus and Bitvis Power Hub. The format is a practical release walkthrough with plain-language explanations for beginners and upgrade caveats for advanced Home Assistant users.

Home Assistant What’s New September 2026: Modbus Modernization, Cloud Login IPs & Voice Processing

Home Assistant 2026.9 introduces significant improvements in smart home automation with a focus on Modbus integration, cloud security, and voice processing. This release modernizes Modbus support, making it easier to connect solar inverters, heat pumps, and energy meters without complex YAML configuration. You'll learn how the new Modbus integrations simplify setup by handling device-specific protocols and enable connection sharing to improve reliability. The update also enhances Home Assistant Cloud by forwarding real source IP addresses for failed login attempts, improving security and IP banning effectiveness. Additionally, a new voice processing engine is being tested to better handle accents, background noise, and non-English languages, enhancing voice control for diverse households. This episode offers a clear, practical overview of these updates, blending technical depth with an accessible, real-world perspective.

Home Assistant What’s New August 2026: Port 8123 Removal, Web Server UI & Safer Configurations

Home Assistant 2026.8 focuses on making the platform easier to understand, configure, and use without reducing its flexibility or technical capabilities. Rather than introducing one major headline feature, this release delivers a wide range of smaller improvements that remove common obstacles for both new and experienced users. In this episode, you will learn why new Home Assistant OS installations no longer require the traditional port 8123 in the web address. We also explain how important web server settings, including the port, network interface, and trusted proxies, can now be managed directly from the user interface instead of relying entirely on YAML. A new rollback and confirmation process helps prevent users from accidentally locking themselves out after changing network settings. The episode also covers Home Assistant’s effort to use clearer and less intimidating language. Terms such as “Advanced,” “Expert,” and “Developer Tools” are being removed or renamed so that features are described by what they do rather than by the assumed experience level of the user. Other topics include the redesigned Home Assistant Cloud settings, greater flexibility when managing entity IDs, and a major change to devices that are provided by multiple integrations. We also discuss new vibration and moon-phase triggers and conditions, media browser search, favorite dashboard cards, improvements to the template editor, and more accurate battery calculations in the Energy Dashboard. For advanced users, the release introduces new AI conversation options through LiteLLM and llama.cpp, as well as expanded credential management for supported Z-Wave locks through Z-Wave JS UI. Additional integrations include Google Health, Gatus, GeoSphere Austria Warnings, NeoPool, Dyson Infrared, and several others. The episode concludes with the most important breaking changes. Users of Paperless-ngx, UniFi Protect, robot vacuum integrations, Ohme, Volvo On Call, and Permobil should review the release notes carefully before updating. Home Assistant 2026.8 is not a traditional feature-packed release. It is a refinement release that makes configuration safer, navigation clearer, and powerful features more approachable.

Home Assistant What’s New June 2026: Card Picker, Automation Editor & Zone Triggers

In this episode, we dive into Home Assistant 2026.6, a release focused on making dashboards smarter and automations more intuitive than ever. At the center of this update is the new Card Picker for dashboards. Instead of starting with a specific card type, you now begin with your entities and areas. Home Assistant then suggests the most relevant cards with live previews, making dashboard creation faster, more visual, and far less trial-and-error. We also explore major improvements to the Automation Editor. New purpose-driven triggers and conditions make it easier to build meaningful automations without complex setup. This includes four new zone-based triggers and conditions, allowing you to react when people or devices enter or leave custom zones such as home, work, gym, or any location you define. These updates significantly improve how Home Assistant handles context-aware automation across Zigbee, ESPHome, Bluetooth, and other integrations. Combined with refinements to dashboards and automation workflows, this release continues to push Home Assistant toward a more accessible and intelligent smart home experience. We’ll break down what’s new, how it works in practice, and why it matters for both beginners and advanced users building complex smart home setups. As always, we also highlight important changes, improvements, and things you should check before updating your system.

Home Assistant 2026.5: Native RF Support, Serial Proxies & The Open Roadmap

In this episode, Anna and Jan dive into the May 2026 release of Home Assistant. True to its title, “We’re on the same frequency now,” version 2026.5 brings a long-awaited feature to the heart of the Open Home: native support for Radio Frequency (RF). We explore how this release bridges the gap between "old" hardware and modern automation, making your smart home more sustainable and versatile than ever. RF as a First-Class Citizen: Following last month's Infrared update, Home Assistant now officially supports Radio Frequency. We explain how you can use ESPHome or Broadlink (RM4 Pro) as transmitters to control "dumb" devices like motorized blinds, ceiling fans, and Honeywell string lights. Serial Ports Over the Network: A game-changer for advanced users. Learn how ESPHome serial proxies allow you to connect smart meters or AV receivers to Home Assistant even if they are floors away from your server. The Maintenance Dashboard: Say goodbye to "silent" sensor deaths. The new built-in dashboard automatically tracks battery levels across your entire home and highlights what needs replacing. Natural Language Automations: "Labs" gets a major upgrade with duration support. We discuss how to build intuitive automations like "If the garage door is open for 30 minutes, send a notification." The Open Roadmap: Fresh from the State of the Open Home 2026 in Utrecht, we talk about Home Assistant’s new public roadmap and how every user—not just developers—can help shape the future of the platform. Redesigned UI & Smarter Tools: A fresh look for robot vacuums and lawn mowers (including "Clean by Area"), the new Shortcut Card, and a massive overhaul of the templating documentation with context-aware autocomplete in the code editor. Also in this episode: 12 new integrations (including Victron GX and Denon RS232), GPT-5.5 support in OpenAI Conversation, and crucial breaking changes regarding Person/Device Tracker triggers and Ring doorbells. Host Note: Always remember to create a backup before upgrading and read the full breaking changes list in the official release notes! Highlights of this Release:
