Your Life Can Get Bigger After 60—If You Let It

Send us Fan Mail Your life can get bigger after 60. When Jack Kohler’s marriage ended five years ago, he suddenly had to face one of his greatest lifelong fears: being alone. What followed wasn’t a quick transformation. Jack filled his calendar because being home alone frightened him. He struggled with Friday nights and New Year’s Eve. He questioned his worth when there wasn’t someone beside him. Slowly, he began discovering something different. He could take care of himself. And as the fear loosened its grip, his world expanded. In this conversation, we explore loneliness versus being alone, learning to choose yourself, friendship and community after 50, physical and emotional wellness, creativity, self-trust, and the unexpected possibilities of getting older. Jack shares a beautiful metaphor for this stage of his life. After his marriage ended, he felt as though he were suspended between two trapezes. At first, he thought he was falling. Then he realized he was flying. And eventually he began wondering whether he needed to grab another trapeze at all. For gay men over 50 who are questioning a relationship, facing an ending, living alone, rebuilding their social lives, or simply wondering what else might be possible, this is a conversation about what can happen when fear stops making our decisions. The Wisdom Trust is a community for gay men over 50 who want richer conversations, deeper connections, conscious aging, and more from the second half of life. Join us and be part of the conversation. What If the Life You Built No Longer Fits?

Send us Fan Mail For many of us, the second half of life brings a strange realization. The career, beliefs, roles, or expectations that carried us this far may not be the things that carry us forward. In this episode of The Wisdom Trust, Loren Crawford talks with Gregg Taylor about what it means to listen when something inside you says it’s time for a change. Gregg’s life has included career reinvention, going back to university at 50, recovery from alcohol addiction, coming to terms with being gay, wrestling with Christianity, and eventually finding a way to bring the different parts of himself together. But this conversation isn’t really about changing careers or even starting over. It’s about becoming more fully yourself. Gregg shares a powerful lesson from decades of helping people through career and life transitions: sometimes we know years before we act that something no longer fits. We stay because it feels safe. But as Gregg says, “Playing it safe is not safe.” For gay men over 50, that question can go especially deep. We’ve lived through enormous changes in how the world sees us—and often in how we see ourselves. The second half of life gives us an opportunity to ask what we still want to carry forward and what we’re finally ready to leave behind. We talk about: • Why careers and identities can have an “expiry date” • Going back to school and reinventing yourself after 50 • Why the transition after leaving a career can take longer than expected • Learning to hear the quiet voice telling you something needs to change • Gregg’s struggle to reconcile being gay with his Christian faith • Moving beyond internalized homophobia toward a more integrated life • Why purpose and community matter as we age • How our experiences can eventually become wisdom • Why the future doesn’t have to be a repetition of the past Chapters 00:00 — Welcome to The Wisdom Trust 01:27 — Meet Gregg Taylor 04:15 — When what got you here no longer fits 06:09 — Rethinking retirement and purpose 09:26 — Gregg’s first major career pivot 14:38 — Making a big change at midlife 19:58 — Why playing it safe isn’t always safe 22:16 — Leaving the daily grind behind 27:37 — Becoming more authentic and integrated 29:59 — When sexuality and spirituality collide 34:15 — The moment Gregg could no longer pretend 37:24 — Putting God “on the shelf” 38:23 — Finding a healthier way to be gay and spiritual 44:39 — Turning experience into wisdom 45:39 — Building a future instead of repeating the past 47:28 — Why gay men need deeper community 51:43 — Closing thoughts The Wisdom Trust is a podcast and community for gay men over 50 who want more from the second half of life—more connection, meaning, friendship, honesty, purpose, and possibility.
