Why Levelling Up Feels Like Falling Behind

A 16-year-old apprentice asked me the other day how I knew all this. I went to answer him and it hit me mid sentence. The thing he was watching was a twist of the shovel that makes cleaning a hole faster and easier. It took me three years to learn. He was six months in and holding his day one up against my 25 years. Then I realised I do exactly the same thing to myself.  Pivoting my business meant I became the face of it overnight. I went from the tools to marketing, sales, podcasts and being in front of the camera. Twenty-five years a carpenter and suddenly I was a beginner again, and I was bad at it. You've been doing this long enough, the voice said. You should be better than this.  I wasn't going backwards. I'd just picked up a shovel I'd never used before. In this episode: -Why levelling up in business always feels like going backwards -Beginner mindset, and why every master goes back to apprentice -Imposter syndrome and the voice that says you should be further along by now -Why your ego makes you avoid the exact thing that would grow the business -Nobody is simply good at business. You're a master in some areas and a novice in others -The first deck I ever sold, and the client who told me my work sold it, not my pitch -Adding the reps, and running towards the thing you've been avoiding -Why marketing and being the face of your business should take years, same as any trade -Pivoting your business and learning a whole new skill set to do it -Managing 40 homes from day one, and 500 builds in four years as a site supervisor -Leading a team with realistic expectations instead of measuring them against your own best  Connect with Tim: Instagram:  @timsayce Linkedin: https://au.linkedin.com/in/tim-sayce-658a2616b Website: https://kaikonstruct.com.au/about/tim-sayce/ Foundations & Futures is for ambitious business owners who want their business to build long-term family wealth, freedom and opportunity.  New episodes every Monday. How Two Brothers Split One Business

A bloke washed dishes at a restaurant in Canada for one snow season. He kept getting free beers there for years afterwards. Not the head chef. Not the manager. The dishwasher. That bloke is my brother. He worked out that clean plates meant better tips for the front of house, and clean pans meant the chef wasn't held up. He chopped the wood nobody else wanted to touch. On $11 an hour with no tips, he built a different kind of currency. The reason he owned that kitchen from the sink is the same reason our building company works today. Jamie runs the site and I run the business. We did our apprenticeship together but went completely separate ways. Years later we ended up in a shipping container on a farm building the first version of Kai Konstruct. We get into how we split one business in two. Why we don’t fight about it. And what to look for before you do the same.  In this episode: Family business and why it isn't the risk everyone says it is The dishwasher principle: work out what everyone needs from you and deliver it every time How two brothers split one business into site and office Why complementary strengths beat identical ones in a business partnership Trust in business, and why Tim hasn't been to site in a month How we disagree without it turning into an argument, and the lanes that make it work Why a construction business is really two businesses in one Going from the tools to running a business, and why nobody teaches tradies that part What a site supervisor actually does, and leadership on site with trades Removing bottlenecks, and the phone call that dropped Tim's ego in one hit Business partnership advice: what to look for and the warning signs it won't work Why every position has more leverage than you think  Connect with Tim: Instagram: @timsayce |  @affinity_res |  @kaikonstruct | Linkedin: https://au.linkedin.com/in/tim-sayce-658a2616b Kai Konstruct: https://kaikonstruct.com.au/about/tim-sayce/ Affinity Res: https://affinityres.com.au/ Foundations & Futures is for ambitious business owners who want their business to build long-term family wealth, freedom and opportunity.  New episodes every Monday. Running a business is lonely

Running a business can be the loneliest thing to do. You're surrounded by people all day but carrying everything on your own. You can't show the team the cracks because they need you to be the steady one. You don't want to dump it on your partner because they've already had the worst of you.  So you lie awake at 2am asking why you're even doing this, with nobody to say it to. I was at an all time low and seriously thinking about calling it quits.  Then a conversation with a stranger gave me the clarity I needed.  That one conversation was the difference between carrying on and packing it in. In this episode: -Business owner loneliness and why it hits hardest when you're surrounded by people -Lonely at the top, and why you can't show the team the cracks -Why you don't take it home to your partner either -The 2am question every business owner has asked themselves -Business owner burnout, business owner stress, and getting close to walking away -The airport conversation with a builder I'd never met -Why running a solo business isn't a badge of honour, and why asking for help felt like failure -Entrepreneur mental health and the cost of building a business alone -Building a business network that helps, and finding a business mentor playing a bigger game -What to pay yourself, how to structure finance, and the questions nobody answers alone -Referring work with no agenda, and the ecosystem that comes back around  Connect with Tim: Instagram:  @timsayce Linkedin: https://au.linkedin.com/in/tim-sayce-658a2616b Website: https://kaikonstruct.com.au/about/tim-sayce/ Foundations & Futures is for ambitious business owners who want their business to build long-term family wealth, freedom and opportunity.  New episodes every Monday. Financial Freedom Starts Outside Your Business

Everyone says reinvest everything into your business. Nobody tells you when to stop. Matt Srama found out the hard way. Two and a half years in, he was earning the most money he'd ever made but dreading Monday at his own business. Then it clicked. He'd bought himself a job. He'd already lost one career. And now the one he’d created for himself felt like a chore.  We talk about the three pillars he runs his life by. The mistake that cost him his own borrowing power. And why assets outside the business make the biggest difference. He also shares the one question he'd ask owners who have everything tied to their business, which took him years to answer himself. In this episode: -Business owner wealth creation and when to stop reinvesting every dollar -The three pillars: business, wealth and personal, and why they run together -Business owner burnout, the sauna moment, and "I bought myself a job" -The three times he nearly quit, including once before he'd even started -The Cashflow Quadrant and the flip in how he saw money and profit -Buying his first investment property at 22 on a footy wage -Deposit fear and limiting the time between your thoughts and your actions -The business strategy mistake that wrecked his borrowing power before EOFY -Playing the year in quarters and halves instead of going all-in on one thing -How a property portfolio and passive income made him take more risk, not less -Career transition from professional sport, leadership, and scaling a business -Property investment mistakes: right location, wrong dwelling type  Resources mentioned: Cashflow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber  Connect with Matt: Website: https://www.thesramagroup.com/  Instagram: @matt_srama Instagram: @srama_goldcoast Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/6ZTdnNdku9iVdkBEFrND8V  Connect with Tim: Instagram: @timsayce Linkedin: https://au.linkedin.com/in/tim-sayce-658a2616b Website: https://kaikonstruct.com.au/about/tim-sayce/ Foundations & Futures is for ambitious business owners who want to build a successful business and use it as the vehicle to create long-term family wealth, freedom and opportunity. The Habit Driving Business Burnout

Nobody posts the hard years. Someone bumped into me at a coffee shop and told me we were crushing it. I smiled and said thanks. In my head I was running through the floods, Covid, sleepless nights, and the moments I wanted to pack it all in. Then a younger builder told me he looked up to me. Instead of feeling good, I felt like a fraud. I'd become the highlight reel, doing to him exactly what the feed had been doing to me. The comparison trap. In this episode I'm breaking down the comparison habit, what it cost, and the question that replaced it.  In this episode: Business comparison and why it quietly kills your drive Social media comparison, doomscrolling, and what the feed does to you at 10pm Your messy 24 hours against someone else's best 10 seconds Imposter syndrome and feeling like a fraud when someone says you're crushing it Why overnight success is a myth, and chapter three versus chapter twenty Business owner burnout from measuring against the wrong scoreboard The iceberg: the 10% everyone sees and the 90% nobody does How I rebuilt my feed and started measuring year on year instead Why reaching out to the people I admired unlocked my business growth Finding a business network that tells you the truth Losing motivation in business and how I got my drive back The only question worth asking when you catch yourself comparing  Connect with Tim: Instagram:   @timsayce Linkedin: https://au.linkedin.com/in/tim-sayce-658a2616b Website: https://kaikonstruct.com.au/about/tim-sayce/ Foundations & Futures is for ambitious business owners who want to build a successful business and use it as the vehicle to create long-term family wealth, freedom and opportunity. Context Switching Is Why You're Exhausted

Everyone tells you to work on the business, not in it. But when you're in it every single day, is that even possible? Tim sits down with Corné Lategan, co-founder of Bizvideo, who's 15 years into running a creative business with his brother Andre. He's burnt out a couple of times getting here. And for the last nine months he hasn't worked a single Friday. Almost nobody knew that. He kept it quiet because he was worried people would think he was lazy. This is the honest version of creative space. What Corné actually does, how he earned the time back, and what he'd tell an owner still stuck in the grind with cash flow tight and no room to think.  In this episode: Why creative space isn't a luxury, it's a business system Context switching and why it leaves you exhausted Why email is the worst context switch in your business Business owner burnout and the "what did I even do today?" hamster wheel Why the office is the worst place for an owner to think Mental models and first principles thinking for business owners The two week notepad system Corné uses instead of a to-do list Time blocking and deep work for founders that actually holds The four day work week, nine months in, from an owner still building Why your day off is an investment, not a reward The fishy effect: small input, big output, and business systems that buy back your week The honest first step when cash flow is tight  Resources mentioned:The Great Mental Models by Shane Parrish Connect with Corné and Bizvideo: Website: https://bizvideo.com.au/ Instagram: @bizvideoInspired Builders Podcast: @inspiredbuilderspodcast Connect with Tim: Instagram:  @timsayce Linkedin: https://au.linkedin.com/in/tim-sayce-658a2616b Website: https://kaikonstruct.com.au/about/tim-sayce/ Foundations & Futures is for ambitious business owners who want to build a successful business and use it as the vehicle to create long-term family wealth, freedom and opportunity. Your Family Deserves More Than Leftovers

I started my business so I'd have more time. Instead I was leaving at 4am and coming home in the dark with nothing left in the tank. The people I built the whole thing for, my wife and my kids, were getting the scraps. Everything changed one freezing morning when my teary-eyed son stopped me at the door and asked me to stay. It was the wake-up call I needed. A reminder that I'd started the business to build a life for him, and I was building the opposite. In this episode I break down what actually changed. It wasn't working fewer hours. It was protecting the right ones. In this episode: Work life balance for business owners and why fewer hours isn't the answer Business owner burnout and how it shows up at home before it shows up at work Why being home and being present are two completely different things The Third Space and how I used my commute to stop bringing work through the door Setting work boundaries that actually hold when the phone never stops How to protect family time and treat it like a client meeting Parenting guilt, present parenting and why 10 focused minutes beats two distracted hours Time management for business owners without cutting back on growth How to delegate tasks effectively so the business doesn't need you in every decision Taking four weeks off for the first time in seven years and what it did for my clarity Why overworking made me a worse business owner, not a better one The one hour challenge I'd give any business owner tonight Resources mentioned: The Third Space by Dr Adam Fraser: https://dradamfraser.com/shop-content/p/the-third-space Connect with Tim: Instagram: @timsayce Linkedin: https://au.linkedin.com/in/tim-sayce-658a2616b Website: https://kaikonstruct.com.au/about/tim-sayce/ Foundations & Futures is for ambitious business owners who want to build a successful business and use it as the vehicle to create long-term family wealth, freedom and opportunity.
