    Episode 5: The Validation Trap Part 2 - Why Validation Never Feels Like Enough

    Why is validation so hard to stop chasing? In Part 2 of The Validation Trap, Mike and Justin go deeper into the places men look for proof that they’re enough—and what happens when achievement, respect, being needed, being right, toughness, and even service become tied to our identity. We unpack the hero complex, the pressure to always provide and have the answers, and the way men often compete with each other instead of actually connecting. We also explore how the need to be right can damage relationships, why being “the tough guy” is often another form of performance, and how chasing success can quietly pull us away from the people we’re supposedly doing it all for. Then we get into why validation can become so addictive. From childhood, our brains learn to associate approval with safety, belonging, love, and acceptance. As adults, that same wiring can create a cycle: Comparison → insecurity → validation → temporary relief → comparison again. Like drinking salt water, the first sip feels like relief—but the more you drink, the thirstier you become. Because validation doesn't create confidence. It temporarily relieves insecurity. This episode challenges you to identify where criticism hurts the most, because that pain may reveal where you've placed your identity—and where you're still allowing other people to determine your worth. There’s nothing wrong with wanting a stronger body, a better marriage, more money, greater success, or more respect. Most of us want to hear “good job.” We want our partners to appreciate us, our bosses to recognize our effort, our friends to respect us, and the people we love to be proud of us. There’s nothing wrong with that. The problem begins when their approval becomes the evidence we use to determine our own worth. In Part 1 of The Validation Trap, Mike and Justin get personal about the ways they spent years chasing external validation—from career success and achievement to relationships, appearance, possessions, and the need to prove themselves to the people around them. Mike shares how constantly chasing the next promotion and the next “attaboy” eventually became a moving finish line. The harder he worked to prove his worth, the further he drifted from himself and the people he was actually working so hard for. Justin shares his own experience of growing up wanting to prove himself, using achievement and even acting as a way to build an identity others could see—while hiding parts of himself underneath the performance. Together, they explore the difference between appreciating validation and depending on it, why criticism can feel devastating when your identity depends on approval, and how comparison keeps the cycle alive. Mike shares the night he came dangerously close to ending his life—and the unexpected message that interrupted that moment. Justin shares the loss of his mother to suicide, the years of pain and addiction that followed, and the decision to finally enter treatment and rebuild his life.
