How to Connect With Art: Remembering Sir Patrick Stewart

When conversations get contentious, we often double down on logic. Perhaps a less Vulcan approach would work: something more befitting the captain of the Enterprise. This week Sir Patrick Stewart died at age 86. He embodied "Star Trek" for generations, artistically expressing the lofty values its fans hold dear. You may not be a Shakespearean actor, but those same skills can work for you when trying to convey something that matters. This episode explains how to express yourself creatively when literal explanations don't work, and pays tribute to our beloved Captain Jean-Luc Picard. What to Listen For3 Keys to Making Art: Discover practical techniques to convey without convincing, depict rather than describe, and open up without oversharing.Which Words To Use: Use active voice to trim dead phrasing and purchase room for vivid, memorable imagery in everyday communication."If You Really Knew Me...": Walk away with an immediate exercise to uncover the missing emotional truth needed to bridge difficult relationship gaps. An Oasis Of Connection For After the Election

We're ready for Election Day. But are we ready for the day after? Political news has everyone on edge. If "they" win, we're in trouble. If "we" win, we still have to deal with "them". So we retreat to our bunkers, turn on noise canceling and wait for someone else to fix it. The bad news is that nobody is coming. The good news is that nobody needs to. In this episode, Joshua Johnson gets you ready for this year's post-election stress. He starts with Halloween and a confession that he's a lifelong fraidy cat. Haunted houses turn out to be a good way to understand difficult conversations, because both use our survival instincts against us. Then he looks at the "post-election hangover" that has kept families apart and soured workplaces since 2016. He draws on a tense but successful panel he moderated at the Aspen Ideas Festival, where liberals and conservatives talked politics over drinks. From there he lays out a simple plan for protecting the places that keep you sane: your bowling league, your project team, your family table. If you're dreading the next few weeks, this episode gives you a way to set boundaries without burning bridges. In this episode, you'll learn: Why your fear in a conflict is a feature, not a flaw, and how to stop judging yourself for itHow to spot the sensory cues people use to provoke you, like a raised voice, someone getting in your space or wide eyesWhat makes a place an "oasis," and how to name its "source," the value it can't do withoutWhy expecting everyone to agree (the "mirage") leaves you defenseless instead of safeFour steps to protect your oasis after the election: map it, let the wind blow, share custody of the source, and carry your own canteenWord-for-word examples of how to steer a political tangent back on track at work or at the bowling alley without starting a fight Chapters 00:00 – Ready for the day after?00:58 – One thing you can use today: surviving haunted houses02:39 – Tip #1: Remind yourself it's just a show03:50 – Tip #2: Don't judge your fear05:26 – Sidebar: Alfred Hitchcock on why we love a good scare06:40 – Tip #3: Bring earplugs (and notice sensory cues)08:15 – Owning your emotions doesn't make you weak10:15 – Something scarier than Halloween: Election Day11:04 – Bonds remain broken after the 2016 election13:20 – A lesson from the Aspen Ideas Festival15:39 – Altitude sickness: carry your own oxygen18:04 – Find your oasis and its source20:08 – The trap of the mirage22:23 – Step 1: Map your oasis23:06 – Step 2: Let the wind blow24:16 – Step 3: Share custody of the source24:32 – 2 examples of how to respond to outbursts27:13 – Step 4: Carry your own canteen28:50 – Building on the idea of your "lodge" from Episode 129:48 – What is the oasis at your lodge? Overcoming Cynicism to Build Connection

Cynicism is easy. Disconnection feels safe. But is isolating in an echo chamber getting you the life, the work, or the relationships you actually want? In this episode, Joshua introduces a clear, actionable alternative to outrage culture: building real human connection over cheap contempt. Through personal stories from 25 years in broadcast journalism—and a memorable exchange with a furious Baltimore police officer on live radio—Joshua breaks down why most modern "debates" are just verbal blood sports and how you can run tactical "ballistics" on conflict to uncover the pain driving the anger. Plus, Joshua tackles four major objections that keep reasonable people from connecting—from the dread of "toxic positivity" to the paralyzing shame of having bought into the outrage machine in the first place. Connection doesn't mean surrender, and civility isn't about being nice. It's about building a lodge in the middle of the storm: hospitable, safe, and governed by boundaries that protect your peace. In This Episode: One Thing You Can Use Today: The three-word phrase that disarms someone in crisis without trapping you in an endless monologue.Ballistics Over Backfire: Why analyzing where the rhetorical "shots" are coming from is more effective than firing back or diving for cover. The 4 Excuses for Disconnection: "I have bigger problems." (Why coalition-building beats isolation)."It's on THEM to fix this." (The illusion of performing toughness vs. exercising real self-command)."You can't reason with a tiger when your head is in its mouth!" (Why keeping your sword sheathed is tactical, not cowardly)."I'm ashamed I bought into the outrage." (Extending grace and gratitude to yourself to break the cycle). The House Rule: Why "nice" is just social lubricant, but "kind" is character—and how to enforce that boundary in your own lodge. Chapters: 00:00 — Introduction 00:22 — One Thing You Can Use Today: “Tell Me Everything” 05:30 — Setting the Stage: Who I Am & Why Connection Matters 09:35 — Ground Rule for Disagreement: If You Can’t Be Nice, Be Kind 10:20 — “Civics for Cynics”: Why Connection Matters 11:45 — The Viral Outrage Machine & the Loss of Civic Debate 15:35 — Running the “Ballistics” on Conflict: A Radio Lesson 20:15 — Objection 1: “I Have Bigger Problems” 23:25 — Objection 2: “It’s on Them to Build the Connection” 27:15 — Objection 3: “You Cannot Reason with a Tiger” 31:30 — Objection 4: “I’m Ashamed” 32:35 — Grace and Gratitude: Moving Forward 34:35 — Don’t Build a Bunker—Build a Lodge 38:45 — Establishing Your House Rule 42:05 — Final Thoughts: What’s Your House Rule? 44:40 — Closing & Goodbye Key Quotes: "Saying 'tell me everything' is not about demonstrating capacity; it's about tenacity. It's about showing... that nothing they can say will scare you off." "Surrendering your boundaries is subjugation. That's not connection. Real connection requires self-control and self-command."
