    DC S06.E14: Clean And Sober

    The writers’ ambivalent (if not outright confused) views about excessive drinking are inflicted on us once again as Pacey throws himself a belated housewarming party to celebrate a Best Buy shopping spree. At least one of your co-hosts is disgusted by the portrayal of female characters uniformly disdaining the new giant TV; all the dudes are firmly in favor, including Gus, Emma’s fiancé? Yep, turns out she needs an American husband, and fast, because her visa is no longer valid for reasons we should have figured out back when she was hanging around the aquarium every day. Joey is determined to drink away her heartache over Eddie’s departure; Jen is ready to be sober out of respect for CJ, so she’s horrified when she hears that Pacey offered him a drink and he took it. At the other end of the sobriety spectrum, Audrey’s still in rehab in L.A. Dawson comes to visit, not only cloddishly arriving without so much as an Us Weekly but then forgetting whom he’s there for as soon as she spots one of her fellow patients: a producer named Toni Stark. Dawson would have to be made of iron (man) not to parlay this chance sighting into a networking opportunity, right???     MSCL S01.E04: Father Figures

    Angela’s in the middle of icing out Graham over her suspicions about his fidelity when another crisis strikes the household: the printing business Patty has taken over from HER father, Chuck (Paul Dooley!) is getting audited by the IRS. Though Graham could not be more ready to put all the blame on Chuck, Patty is stressed that the year in question is when the management passed from Chuck to her, and running decisions past him when he has no such concern for her. Speaking of the print business: a client thanks Graham for a rush job with a couple of tickets to the Grateful Dead. Seeing a chance to win over Angela, Graham offers them to her and Rayanne, only to find out after the fact that Patty doesn’t want Angela to go at all, never mind on a school night. While Graham's putting off breaking the news to Angela, she stumbles into a new reason to talk to Jordan: seeing if he knows anyone who might want buy the tickets from her. When she runs into him again on campus in the fall, his reaction is her first sign that her impulsive decision isn’t going to pan out exactly the way she might have hoped when she made it. A TV iteration of Cruel Intentions, Manchester Prep, was planned for FOX’s 1999-2000 primetime schedule…until Rupert Murdoch (allegedly) had the project sacked for being too crass (!), at which time it was reworked as a prequel, Cruel Intentions 2, and everything about it is…number two: the casting, the timeline, the geography, the wardrobe, and Robin “AJ” Dunne as Valmont makes Ryan Phillippe look like Jon Hamm. This is possibly the crappiest show-verse property we’ve ever contemplated, and we’re talking about that, plus early TWoP days, Some Kind Of Wonderful, and “frisky twins” (ew). Listen now!
