839 Elizabeth Barrett Browning (with Fiona Sampson) | My Last Book with David Medina

In 1845, Edgar Allan Poe wrote, in a review of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's work, "Her poetic inspiration is the highest - we can conceive of nothing more august. Her sense of Art is pure in itself." Later that year, he dedicated his collection The Raven and Other Poems to her, calling her "the noblest of her sex." In this episode, Jacke is joined by the alumni of the first-ever History of Literature Podcast Tour for a lively discussion with poet and biographer Fiona Sampson (Two Way Mirror: The Life of Elizabeth Barrett Browning) about this esteemed Victorian-era poet. PLUS David Medina (Shakespeare's Greatest Love) stops by to discuss his choice for the last book he will ever read. On Sale Now! For more information and to order Great Detective! 838 The Emerson Circle (with Bruce Nichols) | Life Hack! Could This Simple Trick Help You Read More?

What did Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott, Bronson Alcott, Margaret Fuller, the Peabody sisters, and Nathaniel Hawthorne have in common? In addition to being literary luminaries who've been famous for nearly two hundred years, they all lived in Concord, Massachusetts, a little town roughly 20 miles northwest of Boston. How did a town of just over two thousand people come to host so many celebrated American writers? And how did their ideas end up changing the world? In this episode, Jacke talks to author Bruce Nichols about his new book The Emerson Circle: The Concord Radicals Who Reinvented the World. PLUS a listener tells Jacke about his years of struggles to read - and how a surprisingly easy trick changed his life forever. On Sale Now! For more information and to order Great Detective! 837 Ghost Month (with Simon Wroe) | Madness and Murder - The Story of Charles and Mary Lamb

Jacke gets ready for the Halloween season with an episode filled with madness, murder, and ghosts! First, he recounts the story of Romantic period writers Charles and Mary Lamb. Although the brother-sister duo later became famous for their summaries of Shakespeare's tales, they each spent time in madhouses due to fits of "lunacy," one of which resulted in Mary killing their mother with a kitchen knife. Then Jacke talks to author Simon Wroe about his new novel Ghost Month, in which the spirits of the dead return to visit London for four weeks each year. What do they want? And how do Londoners respond? Happy Halloween! On Sale Now! For more information and to order Great Detective! 834 Shakespeare's Scholars (with Sean Keilen) | My Last Book with Nan Z. Da

But have they missed the lessons that Shakespeare had for them in particular? 832 Stendhal [Revisited]

As we recently discussed with Hadley Suter, nineteenth-century French novelist Stendhal (1783-1842) came of age in an era when identity was up for grabs. So who was he? How did he view himself? What did he write, and why do we care so much about him now? In this episode, which originally ran in July of 2000, Jacke takes a look at the life and works of Stendhal, whose innovative novels The Red and the Black and The Charterhouse of Parma made him one of the greatest and most influential novelists of all time.
