How to use email marketing to grow your business with Retention's Adam Robinson | #616

How to use email marketing to grow your business with Retention's Adam Robinson | #616

Keen to use email marketing to grow your business? Cool. On your website, offer visitors something of high perceived value to them, but at a low cost to you. In exchange for their email address, they get it for free. It might be an eBook. A video full of helpful tips. A one-off discount coupon. Over time you build an email list of prospects, that you then communicate with on a regular basis. The result? More loyal customers. More sales. And the lifetime value of those customers increases exponentially. Sounds good, huh? It’s a retentive episode 616 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast with host Tim Reid.

A little more about email marketing expert Adam Robinson …

Adam Robinson is the founder of Retention.com, a company laser-focussed on solving the #1 problem marketers and eCommerce brands face today: growing, engaging, and re-activating their email database.

In just two and half years, and with zero funding, Adam has grown Retention from zero to $14M in annual recurring revenue. Trust me, he knows what he’s doing!

We cover plenty of marketing ground including:

Why you need an email database and how to build one
If you have built an email database, you’ll discover how to best engage with it
The role polarisation plays in attracting and retaining customers
Plus Adam shares some great case studies covering all of the above

Now, I intended to kick things off by asking Adam how he became a retention expert, but we were quickly side-tracked when he mentioned just how much he paid for his business’s domain name!

Word of mouth marketing hall of famer Jay Baer on creating marketing that gets results | #615

Word of mouth marketing hall of famer Jay Baer on creating marketing that gets results | #615

If there was a more mature, funnier, well-informed small business marketing lover than me, then it’s Jay Baer. The guy has an uncanny ability to turn even the most sceptical business owner into a marketing tragic. I’ve been stalking, I mean following Jay’s work for over ten years, and every book (he’s written six), every research study he’s commissioned, every new concept he comes up with to help us small business owners grow, never fails to disappoint. It’s an exciting episode 615 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast with host Tim Reid.

A little more about small business marketing expert Jay Baer …

OK, so if I asked Jay Baer to introduce himself, here’s what he’d say:

“The world’s most inspirational customer experience, customer service, and marketing keynote speaker. New York Times best-selling author of six books. A 7th-generation entrepreneur. The founder of five, multi-million dollar companies. Certified tequila sommelier. And, lover of all things plaid!”

I agree with all of the above, plus here’s my own two bobs worth.

You see, Jay is a marketing hero of mine who I’ve been following for over ten years. He first appeared way back in episode 296 where he spoke about his then new book Hug Your Haters.

What I really like about Jay is that he has an engaging way of identifying and uncovering the fun side of marketing that always produces results for those who action his teachings.

Jay’s second book Youtility is in my top 3 marketing books of all time.

In terms of achievements, it’s an impressive roll call. He’s:

One of less than 200 living members of the Professional Speakers Hall of Fame
An inductee into the Word of Mouth Marketing Hall of Fame
An advisor to more than 700 companies since 1994, including Caterpillar, Nike, The United Nations and 36 of the FORTUNE 500

I encourage you to get your journal out for this one, as we cover so much marketing gold it verges on embarrassing! Topics include:

The importance of speed in business
How to create an unforgettable customer experience
How to create effective marketing on a limited budget
Jay shares his #1 secret to getting a return from your social media
    We touch on word-of-mouth marketing
    And plenty more …

I started off by asking Jay Baer to share his favourite definition of marketing …

How to create a culture of care in your business with a 4th generation business owner | #611

How to create a culture of care in your business with a 4th generation business owner | #611

Ball chain. Three million feet of ball chain every week. That’s what today’s guest manufactures. You know what ball chain is, right? You will shortly! Plus his 84 year old family business has become the most trusted provider of masks in the US. How’s that for a pivot!? Two vastly different products connected by a business owner who cares deeply for all aspects of his business. It’s a loving episode 611 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast with Host Tim Reid.A little more about Ball Chain's Bill Taubner …

Today’s guest owns and runs two businesses.

One manufactures and sells three million feet of ball chain each week, and was started in 1938 by his great, great, great grandfather. I can already hear you asking what the hell is ball chain. Sit tight, you’re about to find out!

The other is a hygiene mask business that was started in 2020 in direct response to the pandemic, and in just two years has become the most trusted mask provider in the US.

His name is Bill Taubner and whilst he doesn’t sell the sexiest products in the world, he is a business owner that cares deeply for his customers, his staff, his suppliers and his local community.

He’s also a business owner that’s crystal clear on his values and ensures they’re evident in all his, and his 100+ staffs’ business dealings.

And that’s where today’s big learning is for us all.

As you’ll hear Bill say on more than one occasion, great businesses should be a reflection of who you are and what you stand for.

Now Bill can get on a bit of a roll, making it challenging for this timid little podcaster to get a word in … but do persevere as he shares some business and marketing gold once he builds up a head of steam.

I started off asking Bill how it feels to be at the helm of a fourth generation business …

Annie C. -Truly Grateful ,

Honestly a life saver…

Hi Timbo,

(first of all, what a cool name.)

I stumbled across your podcast in the fall of 2021. I thought your accent was pretty cool, so I kept listening. My husband and I had just had our first baby in October of the same year, and then we opened up our chiropractic office in February of ‘22. I had no business or marketing training whatsoever, (actually I have a bachelors degree in nursing) and your podcast planted the seed for the love of “marketing” which I've learned is so much more than Facebook ads. Instead- it’s really trying to get deep into understanding humans and what makes them tick. But in the early (earlier) days of small-business owning… honestly my hubs and I had some dark days. There are so many unknowns, and often-times, ideas fail. Your podcast gave me hope and excitement and courage to keep going and most importantly, to take action. So a big “thank you” to you, and I’m hoping that you keep up the podcasting for many years to come.

Truly grateful,

Annie Claggett
