In 1977, a stranger calls Ruth Finley to blackmail her about a secret from her past. The caller escalates to stalking her on the streets, sending terrifying poems in the mail, and threatening her life. The case sets off a years-long manhunt, one of the most expensive and infamous in Wichita history, to catch the man known as The Poet. A serial killer named BTK, with a knack for bad poetry, already had the city on edge. So when Ruth goes to the police, they start to wonder: are The Poet and BTK the same person? The police try to protect Ruth at all costs. At one point stationing officers in the home she shares with her loving husband. Still, The Poet keeps finding ways to get to her. At the dawn of criminal profiling and serial killers, it’ll take a whole new strategy to finally crack this case. And when they do, it opens up bigger, scarier mysteries about the human psyche. True Crime
We’re getting into 1950s Hollywood, ground zero for a cultural transformation that would upend every aspect of Americans’ lives. A movie theater in every city, a TV in every living room, and a Post-war America determined to be happy at any cost. Also during this period… a slew of untimely Hollywood deaths. The rules of the road for the next seventy years were being written in real-time, and not everyone would make it out alive. This is the story of how Hollywood sold us on a new American Dream, and left a few unlucky stars holding the bag. Hosted by Adam McKay (The Big Short, Vice, Succession). Documentary
Seven years ago, journalist Justine van der Leun received a letter that would change her life. The sender was a woman named Kwaneta Harris, who was incarcerated at a prison in Texas. Kwaneta had an incredible story—one that, over time, she began to tell Justine. Justine wanted to know more, and began to report deeply. Kwaneta’s story turned out to be more complicated, tangled, and murky than Justine could have ever imagined. Bad checks are cashed. Fibs turn into lies turn into scams. A mysterious man wrapped in bandages signs binding legal documents. At one point, a young mother walks into a courthouse in Dallas and confesses to a murder she did not commit. None of it is real, or maybe all of it is. And somehow at every twist, behind every bizarre story, Justine kept finding her way back to one person: Kwaneta. - For more of Justine’s work, read Unreasonable Women, which follows three women who have been punished for defending themselves. The result of seven years of reporting inside U.S. prisons, it's a gripping, urgent look at how survivors are criminalized, called "required reading for anyone who cares about women and justice," by Bookpage, "remarkable... riveting," by Kirkus, and "true crime at its finest," by Booklist. Available now on Amazon or Bookshop.org. - Episodes release weekly on Mondays. To binge the series right now, hit ‘Subscribe’ at the top of the show page on Apple Podcasts or visit GetTheBinge.com.
