From Gang Leader to Cop: Inside Miami’s Cocaine Wars with Lt. Raul Diaz- Interview with Lieutenant Raul J. Diaz and Sean Oliver

Join Lisa, Matt, and Jules for a gripping conversation with Lieutenant Raul J. Diaz and Sean Oliver, co-authors of Killing the Lieutenant, a firsthand account of crime, corruption, and survival during Miami’s notorious cocaine wars. Raul Diaz’s story sounds like something out of a crime movie—but it’s real. After immigrating to the United States from Cuba, Diaz went from being involved in gang life to becoming a police officer and eventually one of the law enforcement officers fighting some of Miami’s most dangerous criminals during the explosive drug era of the 1980s. In this episode, Diaz takes us inside a Miami where cocaine trafficking was exploding, violent criminals were flooding the streets, and police were often working without the technology, resources, and forensic tools available today. He shares what it was like confronting powerful criminal organizations and operating undercover in an era when the risks were enormous and backup wasn't always guaranteed. We also explore the human cost of a career spent fighting violent crime. Diaz opens up about the relentless stress, physical and mental toll, and health problems that followed years on the front lines of Miami's war on drugs. Sean Oliver discusses how his collaboration with Diaz began and what went into transforming Diaz’s experiences into Killing the Lieutenant. Together, they explain why telling the personal stories behind the badges and headlines was so important—and why the human perspective can make a crime memoir far more powerful than simply recounting the cases. The conversation also takes aim at the way popular culture and media have romanticized notorious criminals, including figures like Griselda Blanco, and asks what gets lost when criminals become celebrities. We discuss the difference between the mythology surrounding Miami’s cocaine era and the reality experienced by the police officers, informants, victims, and communities caught in the middle. Finally, we reflect on Diaz’s legacy and his work with CENTAC 26, examining the impact of his career and the sacrifices made by the officers who helped take on Miami’s drug trade during one of the most dangerous periods in the city’s history. If you're a fan of true crime podcasts, Miami cocaine wars, organized crime, drug trafficking, police memoirs, undercover investigations, criminal history, and real-life crime stories, this is an episode you won't want to miss. *Please note all opinions in the show are our own and solely in regards to the specific case we are discussing in this episode* We made a one stop shop for all the Eye for an Eye links our listeners might want to check out whether its where to listen, our merch shop, all of our socials, our email, or ways to support the show,  we’d love for you to visit the link below!  https://msha.ke/eyeforeyepod/ Tired of Ads? The Co-Ed Killer: Inside the Disturbing Mind of Ed Kemper - Ed Kemper

Join Lisa, Matt, Jules, and Noa as they take a chilling deep dive into the life and crimes of one of America’s most notorious serial killers: Ed Kemper, the “Co-Ed Killer.” In this episode, we explore the disturbing story of a man whose horrific crimes were matched by his remarkable ability to articulate his thoughts and seemingly understand the gravity of what he had done. From his deeply troubled childhood and early criminal behavior to the murders that ultimately made him infamous, we examine the events that shaped Kemper's path toward becoming a serial killer. We discuss Kemper's reported mental health diagnosis, his disturbing relationship with his mother, and the murders of multiple young women before turning to the shocking killings of his mother and her friend. How could someone commit such horrific acts while simultaneously providing such detailed insight into his own thoughts and behavior? The conversation also dives into one of the most difficult questions surrounding violent crime: What does it actually mean to be legally insane? We examine Kemper's trial, his sentencing, his cooperation with law enforcement, and the conflicting perspectives surrounding his mental state. Was Ed Kemper truly unable to understand right from wrong—or was he fully aware of what he was doing? And when someone can calmly explain their actions after committing unimaginable violence, where does mental illness end and criminal responsibility begin? We explore the complicated intersection of serial killers, psychology, mental illness, criminal investigations, and the insanity defense, while confronting the uncomfortable reality that understanding a killer's mind doesn't necessarily explain—or excuse—their actions. No Ass, No Acquittal- The Karen Read Trial

Join Lisa, Matt, Jules, and Noa as they take a deep dive into one of the most polarizing true crime cases in recent memory: the death of Boston police officer John O'Keefe and the murder trial of Karen Read. Did Karen Read deliberately strike O'Keefe with her SUV and leave him to die in the snow? Or was she framed as part of a larger cover-up designed to protect powerful insiders? In a case filled with conflicting testimony, disputed forensic evidence, questionable investigative tactics, and endless speculation, separating fact from fiction has become nearly impossible. In this episode, we break down the competing theories surrounding O'Keefe's death, examining witness statements, digital evidence, timelines, and the forensic findings that have fueled heated debates across the true crime community. We discuss the intense media scrutiny that transformed this trial into a national obsession and explore how internet sleuths, podcasts, and social media have shaped public perception of guilt and innocence. The conversation also tackles uncomfortable but necessary questions about police accountability, the "blue wall of silence," and whether loyalty within law enforcement can sometimes stand in the way of the truth. Could investigative mistakes and tunnel vision explain the inconsistencies in the case, or do the unanswered questions point to something much more troubling? As we review the many scenarios presented throughout the investigation, we grapple with the reality that proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt is often far more complicated than it appears. With allegations of corruption, claims of a cover-up, and no shortage of unanswered questions, the Karen Read case remains one of the most fascinating and controversial legal battles of our time. If you're obsessed with true crime podcasts, unsolved mysteries, courtroom drama, forensic evidence, and high-profile murder cases that leave you questioning everything, this episode is one you won't want to miss. Murdaugh's Second Chance: Did Power Corrupt Justice?- Murdaugh Update

Join Lisa, Matt, Jules, and Noa as they dive into the latest shocking twist in one of the most infamous true crime cases in recent history—the granting of a new trial for convicted killer Alex Murdaugh. Once found guilty of murdering his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, in a case that captivated the nation, Murdaugh is now seeking another chance in court. But this isn't just a story about murder. It's a story about power, privilege, political influence, and a legal dynasty that controlled a corner of South Carolina for generations. In this episode, we examine the allegations that helped secure Murdaugh's retrial, including claims that former court clerk Becky Hill improperly influenced jurors while allegedly pursuing a tell-all book and media opportunities connected to the case. We explore how these accusations have reignited debate about whether justice was truly served—or whether the system itself became compromised. The conversation goes beyond the courtroom as we unpack the extraordinary influence wielded by the Murdaugh family for decades and ask a difficult question: Would an average defendant ever receive the same opportunities and legal advantages? We also discuss how true crime documentaries, podcasts, social media, and internet sleuths have transformed modern criminal investigations and high-profile trials. Has public scrutiny improved accountability, or has it complicated the pursuit of justice? This episode explores the intersection of wealth, corruption, media influence, and the American justice system in a case that continues to raise more questions than answers. If you're fascinated by true crime podcasts, courtroom drama, criminal investigations, legal scandals, and the Murdaugh family saga, this is an episode you won't want to miss. Savage vs. Civilized: A Psychologist’s Fall from Power to Prison...and Back- Paul Smith Interview

Join Lisa & Matt as we sit down with Paul, a former clinical psychologist whose life took a shocking turn from running a thriving private practice to serving time in federal prison for healthcare fraud. Get your copy of Paul's book 'Cruel and Unusual Punishment: A Memoir of the Psychological Realities of Federal Prison' here: https://amzn.to/3QHVs4c Paul shares how he built a successful psychology practice between 2007 and 2011 before everything unraveled, leading to his conviction and incarceration. We dive deep into his firsthand experiences navigating the federal prison system—from solitary confinement and unexpected transfers to the harsh realities inmates faced during COVID-19. Paul opens up about the unspoken rules of prison life, including how dominance and intimidation shape daily interactions and determine survival. In one striking story, Paul recounts a childhood moment on a farm where he learned the hard way asserting dominance can mean the difference between vulnerability and control. He shares how, despite initially trying to avoid conflict, he was forced to adapt quickly in situations that challenged his place within the prison hierarchy. This episode also explores bigger-picture conversations around criminal justice reform, questioning whether the system prioritizes punishment over rehabilitation.
