The Cadaver's Lessons is a podcast that explores the strange, fascinating, and sometimes unsettling history of medicine. Each episode traces the origins of medical practices and rare or unusual diagnoses, examining why people believed in them, how they were used, and what they reveal about the people and societies behind them. From early anatomy and experimental treatments to cases where medicine and crime collide, this show examines what lessons the past has left behind. Some ideas evolved into the foundations of modern healthcare. Others? Definitely should have stayed buried. Episodes range in tone and focus: some lean heavily into medical history and science, others drift into true crime, and many sit right at the intersection of both.     Case File: The Birth of Intubation: How Joseph O'Dwyer Changed Medicine Forever

Tracheotomy was the only available treatment—and for many young patients, it offered little hope. In this episode, we tell the remarkable story of Dr. Joseph O'Dwyer, the physician who refused to accept that reality. Working in New York's overcrowded Foundling Asylum during the late 1800s, O'Dwyer witnessed hundreds of children die from "croup" (diphtheria). Determined to find another way, he spent six years studying cadavers, creating airway molds, redesigning instruments, and repeatedly testing new techniques until he developed the first practical method of laryngeal intubation. Today, placing a breathing tube into the airway is one of the most recognizable procedures in emergency medicine—but getting to this point took more than 4,000 years of trial, tragedy, and innovation. In this episode of The Cadaver's Lessons, we trace the incredible history of airway management from ancient Egyptian tracheotomies and the physicians who dared to cut into the neck, to the diphtheria epidemics that inspired the first successful intubation devices, the birth of modern anesthesia, World War I reconstructive surgery, and the invention of the laryngoscope that forever changed emergency medicine. Today we're diving into the incredible life of Dr. James Francis "Frank" Pantridge, the physician whose vision transformed emergency medicine forever. Before portable defibrillators, suffering a cardiac arrest outside the hospital was almost always a death sentence. Pantridge refused to accept that reality. Drawing on experiences that included surviving one of World War II's most brutal prisoner-of-war camps, he pioneered the world's first portable defibrillator and created the first mobile intensive care ambulance—bringing lifesaving cardiac care directly to patients. His ideas were considered radical. Many believed ordinary people could never safely use a defibrillator. Pantridge disagreed, and his determination ultimately led to the development of the modern Automated External Defibrillator (AED) that now hangs in airports, schools, gyms, and workplaces around the world.     Case File: The First Insulin Murder: How Forensic Science Solved the "Perfect" Crime

In May 1957, 31-year-old Elizabeth Barlow was found unconscious in her bathtub by her husband, Kenneth, a former charge nurse. At first glance, the scene appeared to be a heartbreaking accident. But an observant forensic pathologist noticed small details that didn't fit—a healthy young woman drowning in a household bathtub was unusual, and subtle clues at the scene raised more questions than answers. As the investigation unfolded, an autopsy revealed Elizabeth had actually been eight weeks pregnant. Even more puzzling were signs that pointed toward severe hypoglycemia rather than a simple drowning. When investigators discovered tiny injection marks hidden on her body, the case took an extraordinary turn. At a time when insulin was widely believed to be impossible to detect after death, forensic scientists embarked on one of the most ambitious toxicological investigations ever attempted. Using experimental techniques involving more than 1,200 mice, 150 rats, and 24 guinea pigs, researchers were able to recover measurable amounts of insulin from Elizabeth's tissue—an achievement that forever changed forensic medicine.
