It was depression, of course, that made me take control of what was happening in my life. I thought “Okay I’m pretty smart, so how come I can be a valedictorian but cannot make my brain make me happy?” And that’s when I started to look through books that talk about brains. While browsing I came across “Genius Foods.” Will not lie, it took me a while to get past the first hundred pages (as I hadn’t been accustomed to this kind of language and justifications) but then it all just clicked. That’s how I was literally welcomed to the rest of my life!
I was never a really bad eater, but I instantly excluded the majority of processed food I was having from time to time, all the unnecessary oils and all of that. Then I found the podcast, read the next book, changed lamps at home, started really working out and focusing on resistance training. Had a tough conversation with my grains.
Max, you introduced me to a new world of people who prioritize health, both physical and mental, take responsibility for their choices and just try to make this world a bit better. I like that you actually listen to your guests, allow other opinions to be said out loud and stress that all of us need to find what works specifically for us. That’s healthy and it’s a great anchor of adequacy that’s so hard to find these days.
The podcast especially points you in a direction of loving yourself, appreciate your body, find a new meaning in life in progressing over the time with your own efforts without looking left and right. The path you chose is your own. After I changed the way I eat and the way I think about my body I found that all the physical activities like yoga, hiking etc which I had been rejecting suddenly brought joy and happiness to my life. Found new hobbies and found new people to surround myself with.
After all my attempts to bring my friends on the new path with me they now introduce me to their new-borns as Auntie Avocado...
Needless to say, who remembers the dude I was depressed over?! Gosh...
Also, Max, I actually used your book in an IELTS essay as an argument (though I got a terrible low score on that... 🤨). Anyway a big thank you from a Russian living in South Korea. We transcend borders and that’s amazing!
