Virginia Woolf
Virginia Woolf, born Adeline Virginia Stephen on January 25, 1882, was an English writer, considered one of the most important modernist 20th-century authors and a pioneer in the use of stream of consciousness as a narrative device. Woolf was born into an affluent household in South Kensington, London, the seventh child in a blended family of eight. Her parents were Sir Leslie Stephen and Julia Prinsep Duckworth Stephen, both of whom had been married previously. Woolf was educated at home by her father, a notable historian, author, and critic, and she grew up in a literary and intellectual atmosphere. The early deaths of her mother in 1895 and her half-sister Stella in 1897 led Woolf to experience her first of several nervous breakdowns. Throughout her life, Woolf would battle with periods of mental illness. Despite the challenges she faced, Woolf became an influential part of the Bloomsbury Group, an association of English writers, artists, and intellectuals. She began writing professionally in 1900, initially for the Times Literary Supplement. Her career took off with the publication of her first novel, "The Voyage Out," in 1915. Throughout her life, Woolf wrote prolifically, producing novels, essays, criticism, and biographies. Her most famous works include "Mrs. Dalloway" (1925), "To the Lighthouse" (1927), and "Orlando" (1928). Woolf's marriage to Leonard Woolf in 1912 was largely a happy and stable one, although they did not have children. Together, they founded the Hogarth Press in 1917, which published much of Woolf's work as well as groundbreaking work by T.S. Eliot, Katherine Mansfield, and Sigmund Freud. Virginia Woolf is remembered both for her contribution to literature and for her essays on art, politics, and society. Her works are considered essential readings in the canon of feminist literature. She continued to battle mental illness throughout her life and sadly ended her own life by drowning in 1941 at the age of 59. Woolf's legacy continues to influence writers and readers around the world.
