When La Chancla Crosses the Line

La chancla, which refers to a flip flop in Spanish, is a cultural discipline style that has evolved to be very symbolic. La chancla can also refer cords, cables, the belt, hangers, any item that can be used to inflict pain as a punishment. Often, it is also a trigger word and is a form of child abuse. In this special 1-hour sesión, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Maritza Plascencia shares her personal experience with la chancla, and dives deeper with her professional knowledge about the generational differences of la chancla, the use of it in schools, when discipline crosses the line, when professionals and people need to report, why it is used and what people can do instead.  You can find more about Maritza at www.mindfulquestrelationshipcounseling.com/  Instagram: @MindfulQuestRC Facebook: Mindful Quest Counseling Resources: ChildHelp: www.childhelp.org is a nonprofit dedicated to helping victims of child abuse, neglect and at-risk children. Stop Waiting to “Figure It Out!” (Do THIS In The Next 48 Hours to FINALLY Take the First Step in Finding Your Purpose)

Jay taps into the question so many people quietly carry: “Is this really what I’m meant to do?” With honesty and clarity, he challenges the myths we’ve been taught about purpose, that it’s a single calling, that passion comes first, or that clarity arrives before action. Instead, Jay reframes purpose as something you build through curiosity, experimentation, and small, consistent steps. He reminds us that most people aren’t lost, they’re avoiding what they already know because of what it might cost. Jay offers a practical framework for finding direction. He points to the things that come naturally, what deeply moves or frustrates you, the challenges you’ve lived through, and even who you envy as signals worth paying attention to. These aren’t random, they’re clues guiding you toward the work that’s truly aligned with you. The message is simple but powerful: stop waiting for certainty, start moving, and trust that clarity comes through action. In this episode you'll find: How to Find Your Purpose How to Turn Passion Into Purpose How to Start Before You’re Ready How to Overcome Fear of Failure How to Build Confidence Through Action How to Become More Yourself The quiet ideas you keep returning to, the things that light something up inside you, the dreams you keep pushing aside, they matter for a reason. Start where you are, with what you have, and trust that clarity often comes after action, not before it. Session 458: Hair, Identity & Choice

Hair always seems to be a hot topic, doesn’t it? From what style is “acceptable” to wear at work, to the politics of what’s considered “going natural,” hair is, no pun intended, always on the brain. And as Black women especially, there is so much tied to our hair–it can dictate how we’re perceived in certain spaces, signal lifestyle choices, and can reflect much more than a simple aesthetic preference. Amidst all the hair discourse, it’s important that we reclaim the space we want (or don’t want) hair to take up in our lives. Today, I’m chatting with our Director of Podcast & Digital Content, Ellice Ellis all about my hair journey and the different shapes it’s taken throughout my life.  About the Podcast The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves.   Resources & Announcements Want to reflect on this conversation in community? Join us inside our Patreon community where we’re unpacking this episode together. Session 450: Reproductive Psychiatry

Reproductive health is often discussed in terms of our physical bodies, but what about our mental and emotional well-being across the reproductive lifespan? In today’s session, I’m joined by Dr. MiMi Sanders, a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in reproductive psychiatry, to help us better understand the unique mental health needs that can show up during menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum, fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, and menopause. We explore what reproductive psychiatry is, why it’s especially important for Black women, how mood and anxiety disorders can show up during major reproductive transitions, and what it looks like to advocate for yourself when navigating mental health care during these seasons. Dr. Sanders also breaks down common myths about medication during pregnancy and postpartum and shares what supportive, culturally responsive care should look like. Session 453: What Speech-Language Pathologists Actually Do?

The ability to express ourselves through speech remains one of the most important ways we communicate. It’s at the root of how we connect, understand each other, and even how we explore our own identities. From childhood, we learn that what we say and how we’re able to say it can impact how we move through the world. Speech pathologists help those of us who experience challenges in expressing our thoughts and processing language. And as important as this work is, there are still disparities in who receives care.  This week we're excited to welcome Dr. Dawn Ellis, a Speech-Language Pathologist, advocate, and educator whose journey led her to a career helping children, families, and communities communicate with confidence. In this conversation, we explore language development, identity, and how communication intersects with mental health, particularly for Black women and families.
