The Pathways Initiative - Future Earth

The Pathways Deep Dive Podcast is a project of the Pathways Initiative of Future Earth. With our Deep Dive, we aim to raise awareness and understanding of the connections between political tensions and socio-ecological crises as well as the many forms of resistance and responses within and outside science. Hosted by the French Hub of Future Earth, the mission of the Pathways Initiative is to enhance researchers’ capacity to engage in transformative research and actively contribute to supporting societal actors in co-developing pathways for more sustainable futures at different scales. Pathways Deep Dive Podcast - Unpacking environmental mis- and disinformation

How does disinformation spread, who is behind it, who is most vulnerable to believe misinformation, and what strategies can help counter it? These are some of the questions that we strived to answer in our first episode of the Pathways Deep Dive Podcast: Unpacking Environmental Mis- and Disinformation. Disinformation is a result of an organized, systemic network of actors, and is a significantly profitable endeavour for those behind the scenes. We shouldn’t forget though that such networks are so successful because they are able to exploit the psychological factors that render us more vulnerable to believing fake news in the first place. To help us go through the interplays of these two dimensions, we are grateful to have been joined by: Thais Lazzeri, founder and director of @FALA – Estúdio de Impacto. A journalist and researcher, she created Mentira Tem Preço (“Lies Have a Price”), an initiative exposing the true economic and social costs of climate disinformation and its supply chains. She also directs the Observatory for Information Integrity on Climate (Oii-Observatory). Kevin Winter, postdoctoral researcher at the University of Hohenheim, Germany. As a social psychologist, his work focuses on why people come to believe misinformation and what strategies can be used to make people less vulnerable to fake news. ------- We are the Pathways Initiative, hosted by the French Hub of Future Earth, our mission is to enhance researchers’ capacity to engage in transformative research and actively contribute to supporting societal actors in co-developing pathways for more sustainable futures at different scales.
