The workers in the engine room of big tech

We look at revelations about outsourced tech workers in Kenya, and try to find out why more than a thousand of them have been made redundant. Also this week: are you getting the best out of artificial intelligence? Could changing "how" you communicate with AI make a difference? We speak to an author and put his recommendations to an AI test. And we hear from a company turning lamp-posts into data centres. Presenter: Chris Vallance Producer: Tom Quinn (Image: The words "Meta AI" are displayed on a smartphone screen. The phone is resting on a laptop keyboard. Credit: Reuters)

    Tarjeteros

In the streets of the Dominican Republic, a new economy thrives in the shadows. It’s built not on tourism or sugar, but on stolen data. They call them tarjeteros. And they are making a lot of money from stolen credit cards. This is a story about one group of tarjeteros who came to the US, and let loose on New York city. In this episode we hear EvilMog (https://x.com/Evil_Mog) tell us a story about when he had to troubleshoot networks in Afghanistan. We also get Joe (http://x.com/gonzosec) to tell us a penetration test story.SponsorsSupport for this show comes from Varonis. Do you wonder what your company’s ransomware blast radius is? Varonis does a free cyber resilience assessment that tells you how many important files a compromised user could steal, whether anything would beep if they did, and a whole lot more. They actually do all the work – show you where your data is too open, if anyone is using it, and what you can lock down before attackers get inside. They also can detect behavior that looks like ransomware and stop it automatically. To learn more visit www.varonis.com/darknet.Support for this show comes from Axonius. • Will algorithms increase your grocery bill?

Will algorithms increase your grocery bill?

Walmart’s digital price tags. The retail giant is rolling out shelf labels that allow prices to be updated instantly across stores. This isn’t a new trend. Airlines and hotels constantly adjust pricing based on demand. But if grocery prices can change in real time, what will this mean for your bill? And will pricing ever be adjusted using customer data or behavioural signals to maximise profit? Nicky launches the Great Interface Banana Pricing Study to monitor digital price tags in your local store. Also this week: Houston we have a problem… with our Microsoft Outlook. Artemis II’s crew on the way to the moon reported issues with their email inbox. While the glitch was eventually fixed, it raised eyebrows on earth and questions about the popularity of Microsoft Products. Microsoft still has a massive user base. Windows remains dominant in PC gaming. But the real backbone is enterprise: businesses are already deeply embedded in Microsoft’s ecosystem, and switching is costly and disruptive. What would the future look like if Windows was dethroned? Microsoft responded to our request for comment after our recording. A spokesperson said: “At Microsoft, we deliver broad access to technology that works across price points, devices, and environments. We design products like Windows and Microsoft 365 for the people who use them every day, while ensuring organizations get the security, performance, and manageability they need at scale.” Is being techy an old person’s game now? Friction Maxxing is the Gen Z term for deliberately making life less convenient. Instead of removing obstacles, it embraces difficulty, tension, and emotional resistance. Karen asks why are some people taking this approach to regain control and focus? Is the next trend in tech…less tech? In Tom’s case, this means listening to cassettes on his boombox. The Interface is your weekly guide to the tech rewiring your week and our world. Hosted by journalists Thomas Germain, Karen Hao, and Nicky Woolf, each episode unpacks, week by week, how technology is shaping all our futures. No guests. No jargon. Just three sharp voices debating the stories that matter — whether they shook a government, broke the internet, or quietly tipped the balance of power. A lot of modern AI models have a kind of security guard layer that sits in front of them. Its job? A binary choice as to whether the prompt heading into the model is safe or not. Kasimir Schulz, a lead security researcher at HiddenLayer, has been researching how to trick these models. Their solution, a technique called "Echogram" involves words with such positive statistical sentiment — such overwhelming good vibes — that it flips that verdict. Learn more about your ad choices. The Legion of Doom (LoD) wasn’t just a “hacker group”, it captured the essence of underground hacking in the 80s/90s. BBSes, phreaking, rival crews, and the crackdowns that changed everything. From those humble beginnings came a legacy that still echoes through modern security culture today. This is part 1 of the LoD/MoD saga. Part 2 is episode 169: “MoD”.
