Sharon Horgan finds the comedy in 'Youth'

This week, Kim Masters speaks with Sharon Horgan about her HBO series Youth. The writer, actor and producer reflects on taking control of her career by creating her own material, building the production company Merman, and working across broadcast networks and streaming platforms. Horgan also explains why she returned to the idea for Youth after years spent making Bad Sisters, and how a brief pitch to HBO quickly turned into a green light. Plus, Masters and Matt Belloni process California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s decision to settle the antitrust suit involving Paramount Skydance. With a major wave of layoffs looming, the banter partners look at what could come next for the proposed Warner Bros. Paramount merger.

Trump’s Media Ban Threatens The First Amendment

President Trump kicked three news organizations out of the White House, but a judge ordered them back in…for now. There are deeper issues here about freedom of the press and, however this plays out, understanding what to do when a brazen president tries to dictate the story of his presidency. President Trump’s foreign policy is also in the spotlight as he speaks at the UN and hosts China’s leader Xi Jinping. What is that foreign policy exactly? Trump launched a war in Iran and targeted Venezuela, but the Russia-Ukraine conflict drags on. If this is a president who promised that he could pick up the phone and influence any world leader, is it time for him to prove it with Vladimir Putin? Producer: Leo Duran Host: David Greene Guests: Mo Elleithee, executive director at Georgetown University's Institute of Politics and Public Service - @MoElleithee Will Swaim, CEO of the California Policy Center - @WillSwaim

Friends of Michael

Longtime friend and editor of Bookworm, Alan Howard, returns to host this episode, the last of 10 shows to journey through Bookworm’s 33 years and offer a retrospective look at Michael’s accomplishments on behalf of writers and readers. For decades Michael has read almost all of a writer’s work, not just the book which has been most recently published. Howard has watched writers glow as they realize that they’ve been seriously witnessed by the ultimate Bookworm. All of the writers on today’s show have become friends of Michael’s and of Bookworm. We’ll hear from rock band Sparks (brothers Ron and Russell Mael), Art Spiegelman, Françoise Mouly, Ann Beattie, Susan Sontag, and Dennis Cooper.

Hollywood goes to Washington for a tax break

This week, Kim Masters reports on the newly formed U.S. Film and Television Production Coalition and its push for a federal tax incentive to stem the loss of production overseas. Members representing studios, producers and unions lay out the industry’s unusually unified campaign, the backing of President Donald Trump, and the details that still have to survive Congress. Plus, Masters and Matt Belloni give a brief update on the rollout of Bari Weiss’s new 60 Minutes. Spoiler: the early ratings are not good. The banter partners also turn to a pair of surprises from the documentary world, including reports that Universal considered holding back Alex Gibney’s upcoming Elon Musk documentary from a global theatrical release, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu escalating threats against the directors of NAZA following the film’s Venice debut.

Carla Lalli Says Food Is A Feeling, from Expense Account

Sharing an episode of the new podcast Expense Account. We all know eating out in New York has become an extreme sport. If you treat dining out like a full-time obsession—and care about the scene just as much as what’s on the menu—you need to listen to Expense Account. Expense Account uses food as an entry point into bigger conversations about restaurants, culture, taste and how it all relates to life and the world at large. Hosted by J Lee, food critic at Emily Sundberg’s Feed Me media empire, J has one million opinions about food. But since he wants to hear everyone else’s take, J will talk to chefs, writers, musicians, actors and more. Like writer Molly Baz, chef Carla Lalli, and PBS host Pati Jinich. You’ll hear about their best meals and worst meals. Favorite spots around the world. And you might even get a peek inside their fridges to find out how they’re really eating. The conversations will start with food, but will always wind up somewhere else, because food is culture, and everybody eats. I’m going to play the first episode for you now. In it, J Lee talks with chef and author Carla Lalli about her journey from Shake Shack to Bon Appetit, her new cookbook, and why we should eat our feelings.
