Myth: The tradwife movement empowers women by affirming traditional gender roles

If you’ve been on social media lately, you might have seen some content about the tradwife movement and from tradwives themselves. Popular tradwife accounts post photos and videos of an idealized domestic lifestyle – taking care of children, cooking from scratch, baking bread, and keeping a clean and organized house – often with a feminine aesthetic that harkens back to the 1950s. They make beautiful content that showcases the value of “traditionally” gendered households, where men are the bread-winners and women are the bread-makers. It might be easy to think that this movement is simply about empowering women to return to tradition. But, when you dig deeper, there’s much more to the story. What even is toxic positivity?

Work relationships can often be complex and can feature blurred lines between the personal and professional. For some, this can result in unnecessary pressure, gaslighting, and toxic positivity, the idea that the best way to cope with a challenging situation is to put a positive spin on it. Busting myths around Indigenous entrepreneurship

Indigenous entrepreneurship has existed across Turtle Island long before settler colonization. But today, there are still so many myths about Indigenous businesses — including the idea that Indigenous people aren’t entrepreneurs, that they rely on government handouts, and that they need to be taught how to build successful businesses. None of that is true. In fact, Indigenous entrepreneurship is thriving — and it’s rooted in long-standing traditions of innovation, sustainability, and community care. Gender Analytics in Financial Services

Financial services is one of the most important sectors in our economy. This is an industry that touches everyone—whether it is saving for retirement, getting a housing loan, financing a new business, or using a credit card—and with that comes the potential to exacerbate or remediate inequalities. And, we probably all know that still so little investment goes to women-owned businesses relative to their male counterparts. And, what about the fact that women are more likely to live in poverty after retirement in part because of the gendered nature of savings and investment? In this episode, we are going to hear from Kelly Baldoni, Stephanie Kelly, Sylvia Kwan and Myan Marcen-Gaudaur about how a gender lens, an Indigenous lens, and more broadly an equity lens on financial services, can create new business ideas, identify new opportunities for improved returns, and achieve a more inclusive economy.

Myth: Gender-based violence is a private issue

Overview: There’s a perception that gender-based violence (GBV) only happens in the home, and that means it’s a private matter, just for families or partners to deal with. This is a misconception that can keep survivors from reporting violence and finding support. Gender-based violence is a human rights violation that encompasses many types of actions including harassment, assault, manipulation, and abuse. It can happen anywhere, including in workplaces, schools, and public spaces, and has significant consequences for all of society. In this episode, we hear from experts from different organizations working against gender-based violence to understand why it is not a private issue but something that everyone should be working to address. This episode is based on an event we held in December 2022 for the 16 Days of Action Against Gender- Based Violence. Myth: Artificial intelligence is bias-free

Many people think of AI as objective and neutral, something that not only makes our lives easier, but also helps us to eliminate the biases that plague human cognition and decision-making. While it’s true AI can do a lot for us, it’s a myth that AI is bias-free. In fact, AI can amplify the bias and perpetuate the inequality that is already rampant in our society. In this episode, we’ll explore how and why AI isn’t as fair as we’d like to believe, the consequences of bias in AI, and what responsible and ethical AI could look like.
