Geekstorians Episode 10: The Secret Language of Geekdom - How Fans Built Modern Geek Culture

Language doesn’t just describe culture. Sometimes, it creates it. In the Season One finale of Geekstorians, Dave explores the hidden history of geek language — how fans invented their own slang, references, in-jokes, and shorthand, and how that language quietly shaped modern geek culture and the internet itself. From handwritten letters in the back pages of early science-fiction magazines, to fanzines, conventions, badges, and costumes… from Monty Python quotes and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, to arcade slang, tabletop role-playing games, online gaming, text-message shorthand, memes, and chat rooms. This episode traces how fandom learned to communicate long before social media existed. Along the way, we explore how shared language helped fandom survive moral panics, cancelled shows, shifting technology, and changing formats, not through manifestos or rules, but through jokes, references, and community shorthand. This episode of the Geektown Behind The Scenes Podcast features possibly my favourite interview so far this year - legendary voice actor, Jeff Bergman. Whilst you might not know his name off the top of your head, you have definitely heard his voice before. Jeff became the first voice actor to perform the voices of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester, and many other Looney Tunes characters after original voice, Mel Blanc, passed away. He also voices iconic Hanna Barbera characters such as Fred Flintstone, Barney Rubble, George Jetson and Mr. Spacely, and is currently lending his vocal talent to the loveable Yogi Bear, Ranger Smith and many others in the new HBO Max series 'Jellystone!'. If all that wasn't enough, his other current project sees him voice both Trump and Biden, along with a multitude of other characters for the hilarious Showtime series 'Our Cartoon President', which is currently airing Saturday nights at 9pm on Sky Comedy in the UK. In the interview, we chat about his work on 'Our Cartoon President', Loony Tunes, Hanna Barbera, and a meeting the legendary Mel Blanc who set him on his career path as a voice actor. We also discuss his work on the Batman '66 animated movies with Adam West and Burt Ward, and he, of course, provides us with a host of spectacular voices! Hitman's David Bateson, the voice of Agent 47 himself!David is a South African actor, born to English parents who now lives in Denmark. He’s worked across film, tv and theatre, but what we know and love him best for, is his voice work as Agent 47 in the long running Hitman video games. He has voiced the character since it’s inception in the year 2000, and, as far as we can tell, he is one of the longest serving voice actors in gaming history. We got to talk to him about his work, how the character has evolved, and some of his favourite scenes in the games.
