Experiences of an Autistic SLP and GLP: A Conversation with Andi Bordash-Colen

Embracing Lived Experiences for ARFID with Rachel Conrad

She quickly acclimated to the culture of the United States and earned her doctorate degree in speech-language pathology from Northwestern University. Currently, she is a Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at California State University, Sacramento, and a part-time speech pathologist in the San Juan Unified School District. She provides services for pre-schoolers through high school. She especially enjoys working with culturally and linguistically diverse students who have communication disorders, as well as those from low-income backgrounds. In addition to her practical experience, Dr. Roseberry-McKibbin has authored over 70 publications, written 16 books, and delivered nearly 400 presentations throughout the United States and internationally. She is an ASHA Fellow and winner of ASHA’s Certificate of Recognition for Special Contributions in Multicultural Affairs, and received the national presidential Daily Point of Light Award for her volunteer work in building literacy skills of children in poverty. Notably, she recently delivered an excellent TED Talk, which earned her a standing ovation. Her topic? “Is ignoring children for devices creating language delay?”

She has obtained certifications in neonatal therapy, pediatric physical therapy, lactation education, neurodevelopmental treatment, infant massage, developmental care, and transportation of children with special needs to better support infants and families. Kati has published articles about support for preterm and medically fragile infants and spoken nationally and internationally on improving the care of infants in the NICU. Kati serves as the therapy representative on the Vermont Oxford Network Multidisciplinary Advisory Council and is a founding member, past co-chair, and past treasurer of the Neonatal Therapy Certification Board. Kati saw patients in NICU follow-up clinic for more than 25 years where she also helped to redesign care to make it more accessible to families. Her thesis explored the use of immersive virtual reality in rehabilitation for cognitive-communication disorders following traumatic brain injury. Sophie’s research examines the use of digital health technologies to support communication after acquired brain injury, while her teaching focuses on practice education for speech pathology students. Dr. Petra Avramović is a lecturer, clinical educator, early-career researcher, and certified practicing speech pathologist. Petra completed a Bachelor of Applied Science (Speech Pathology) with First Class Honours and completed her PhD within the Acquired Brain Injury Communication Lab at the University of Sydney. She has held several roles in clinical and research settings with a variety of populations, with a particular focus on working with people with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Her thesis, entitled “The development and evaluation of convers-ABI-lity: an online communication partner training platform for people with traumatic brain injury”, aimed to collaboratively develop a novel multimodal communication partner training program with people with TBI and others involved in their care, and to evaluate its effectiveness and efficacy for improving conversation skills following TBI. Petra is involved in academic, clinical education, and research supervision for speech pathology students within the university.
