    How Love Really Works

Most of us have ideas about what we’re looking for in a romantic partner. But psychologist Paul Eastwick says these preferences are surprisingly poor guides for finding love. He explains why attraction is so difficult to predict, and what the research suggests is the best way to meet someone with whom you'll connect. Then, in a new installment of “Your Questions Answered,” psychologist Ed Lemay responds to your questions about how we project our own thoughts and feelings onto other people, and how these projections shape our relationships. In our companion conversation for Hidden Brain+ subscribers, we talk with Paul Eastwick about online dating apps. He says apps can powerfully shape our experience of meeting potential romantic partners — often not for the better. If you're a subscriber, that episode is called “The Online Dating Trap.” If you're not yet a subscriber, you can listen to that conversation with a free seven-day trial to Hidden Brain+ by going to support.hiddenbrain.org. If you use an Apple device, you can subscribe via Apple Podcasts at apple.co/hidden brain.   Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. • What a trapped antimatter particle could tell us about reality

What a trapped antimatter particle could tell us about reality

Almost all matter particles have corresponding particles of antimatter: Protons have antiprotons, neutrons have antineutrons, and so on. When matter and antimatter bump into each other they destroy each other and release energy. With carefully manipulated magnetic fields, however, it’s possible to trap particles of antimatter and prevent them from touching regular matter, allowing researchers to study them.  A group of antimatter experts recently reported that they had trapped and held a positron (an antielectron) in a vacuum at ultra-cold temperatures for months, creating what they called “a one-positron quantum cyclotron.” That advance allowed them to study the positron’s quantum properties. They hope to learn whether the positron is indeed an exact opposite of an electron, or if there are tiny physical differences between them. Antimatter wrangler Gerald Gabrielse joins Flora to describe the project, and why researchers care about the properties of antimatter. Guest: Dr. Gerald Gabrielse is a Board of Trustees Professor in Physics at Northwestern University. Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. The Buried Bodies Case

In 1973, a massive manhunt in New York's Adirondack Mountains ended when police captured a man named Robert Garrow. And that’s when this story really gets started. In this episode, that we first released in 2016, we consider a string of barbaric crimes by a hated man, and the attorney who, when called to defend him, also wound up defending a core principle of our legal system. When Frank Armani learned his client’s most gruesome secrets, he made a morally startling decision that stunned the world and goes to the heart of what it means to be a defense attorney - how far should lawyers go to provide the best defense to the worst people? NOTE: This episode contains graphic descriptions of sexual assault and violence, listener discretion is advised. Special thanks to Tom Alibrandi, author of Privileged Information, with Frank Armani, Laurence Gooley, author of Terror in the Adirondacks: The True Story of Serial Killer Robert F. Mothman Mythology (YES, MOTHMAN) with Jeff Wamsley

Red eyes. Ten-foot wings. And an absolute dumptruck. Let’s get to the bottom of the great American mythology of the world’s sexiest cryptid, Mothman. Haunting the hills of West Virginia in 1966-67, he vanished as fast as he flew. Point Pleasant-raised Jeff Wamsley is the owner/operator of the Mothman Museum and an expert in the legends of this creature. What’s the story? Who is telling it? Is Mothman real? What are some scientific explanations? Do other cultures see a Mothman? Is he even a moth? Is he even a man? Where did he go? Why do we want to see him? Who are the Men in Black? Also: why is he so caked up? (Content warning: we discuss an entity that likely is not real. I know that. Don’t email me.) Bloating, Belly Fat & GLP-1: What Your Gut Is Trying to Tell You with Dr. Rajsree Nambudripad

Bloating is one of the most common complaints I hear from women, especially during perimenopause and menopause. And what's frustrating is that so many women are eating healthy, doing everything they think they should be doing, and still struggling with digestive issues. In this episode of Live Like a Girl, I'm joined by integrative medicine physician and gut health expert Dr. Rajsree Nambudripad to talk about what's going on in your gut and some of the everyday habits that might be contributing to bloating. We talk about why giving your gut a break between meals is so important, how your gut bacteria influence hunger hormones like GLP-1, and why stress and even the way you eat your meals affect digestion. We also get into the changes that happen during menopause, the difference between bloating and belly fat, and why some of the foods we consider healthy aren't always easy on our digestive systems. _ IN THIS EPISODE: Why constant snacking might be contributing to bloatingHow spacing out your meals supports gut healthThe connection between your gut bacteria, GLP-1, and hungerHow to tell the difference between bloating and belly fatWhy digestion changes during perimenopause and menopauseHow stress and your nervous system affect digestionWhat to know about fasting, fiber, and supplements for gut health_ MORE ON DR.
