Episode 396: Capable Connections: Friendships with David and Sissy

Friendships are where kids practice being human, but social anxiety, screens, group dynamics, and “rollercoaster” relationships are making connection harder than ever. Sissy and David offer practical ways parents can help kids recognize healthy friendships, develop realistic expectations, practice conversation and initiation, understand reciprocity, set kind boundaries, and navigate awkward moments. Rather than managing every relationship, parents can coach kids to find good friends, have a “good picker,” and become the kind of friend they hope to have. Our family trip to Georgia, conspiracy theory nights & the importance of gathering

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, we're coming to you from GEORGIA!!! We recorded Sunday night from Serenbe (a neighborhood focused on wellbeing 45 minutes outside Atlanta - If you live a direct flight from ATL and are looking for a family trip… we highly recommend!!). We flew in for a friend's kid's first birthday and turned it into a whole family weekend, which leads to a bigger conversation: every state has "pockets of magic" like this, and we share the ones at the top of our list to check out next (the Northeast in the summer!! Montana!! Yellowstone!!).  Then we get into the idea from book club this week that we're SO excited about: conspiracy theory nights!! The concept: each couple researches a conspiracy, presents it (PowerPoint encouraged), and everyone debates whether it's true. Already on the table: the moon landing, aliens, and the Titanic insurance theory we'd never heard before… (pls put your recs in the comments). Plus, THINGS WE DMED on the viral video of an entire flight rallying to find formula for a mom stuck in delays 🥹 (& the very real question: why don't airports sell baby formula?!), a cyclosporiasis update (are we still swearing off produce?), why more servers aren't ALSO the bartender, and a fun fact reveal: Alex went to BARTENDING SCHOOL?! (A+ on the test, never made a cocktail since lol). We wrap with the Harvard study we can't stop thinking about: gathering is MORE healing than sleep for new moms. Alex gets into how this maps onto her two postpartum journeys, and why putting yourself out there to find your people pays dividends 🥹 LOVE YOU GUYS! Timestamps: 00:00:00 Welcome back to Two Parents & A Podcast! 1KHO 871: Children Shouldn’t Have To Wait To Move Their Bodies | Mike Huber, Embracing Rough-and-Tumble Play

Movement isn't a distraction from learning—it's one of the ways children learn best. In this conversation, Ginny sits down with educator and author Mike Huber to explore why rough-and-tumble—or "whole body"—play is one of childhood's most misunderstood and essential experiences. Drawing from decades of classroom experience and research, Mike explains how movement helps children develop self-regulation, social awareness, empathy, confidence, and even the ability to focus and learn. Together, they unpack the difference between healthy risk and hidden hazards, why today's children often lack meaningful agency over their own movement, and how physical play teaches kids to read nonverbal cues, build trust, assess risk, and strengthen friendships. They also discuss why fidgeting and movement are often signs that the brain is trying to regain focus—not evidence that a child isn't paying attention. Whether you're a parent, teacher, or caregiver, this episode offers a compelling case for embracing movement instead of suppressing it—and practical encouragement for raising children who are confident, capable, and deeply connected to both their bodies and the world around them. 282: ENCORE: How to Help Kids Build a Healthy Relationship with Food

If mealtimes in your home feel like a power struggle, or you're exhausted from worrying whether your kid is eating well, this episode will come as a relief. Dr. Lisa Damour and Reena Ninan revisit their conversation with Dr. Reshma Shah, a Stanford-affiliated pediatrician, public health expert, and co-author of the award-winning book “Nourish: The Definitive Plant-Based Nutrition Guide for Families.” With over 20 years of experience in academic and clinical pediatrics and a deep commitment to family-centered approaches to food and wellbeing, Dr. Shah offers a low-pressure, evidence-based roadmap for helping kids develop a healthy relationship with food. 💡 YOU'LL LEARN: - Why what you model at the table matters far more than what you say, and how your own relationship with food shapes your child's more than you realize - Why "clean your plate" rules and other tension-raising practices can backfire (and what a low-stress mealtime actually looks like in practice) - How the language you use around food shapes your child's relationship with eating, and why ditching "good" and "bad" food labels makes a real difference - How to expand your kid's palate and involve them in food choices and preparation in ways that actually work - Why family meals (even brief, imperfect ones) have lasting benefits for your child's nutrition, wellbeing, and your relationship with them It’s not about eating perfectly—it’s about creating a healthy food environment. ________________ GET DR.
