Trump's Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Grift

Kate, Melissa, and Leah try to wrap their heads around Trump’s nearly $2 billion DOJ slush fund, which they agree may be—despite extremely stiff competition—the biggest act of trolling and self-dealing of his second term. The professors count the ways this is so, so illegal, and speculate on how it can be challenged (looking at you, Congress). They also cover other legal news and some SCOTUS opinions before speaking with Dorothy Roberts about her book, The Mixed Marriage Project: A Memoir of Love, Race, and Family. The Daily Blast: Trump Tirades Take Unhinged Turn as His Epic Poll Collapse Rattles GOP

GOP discomfort with Donald Trump is growing. Republicans have effectively blocked taxpayer money for his ballroom, revolted against his corrupt slush fund for insurrectionists, and turned against his war. GOP panic about the his cratering approval and the midterm elections has reportedly escalated amid the ballroom and slush fund dramas. Amid mounting GOP opposition, Trump let out a strange, self-pitying Truth Social rant about his ballroom. Then at a rally he unleashed a weird tirade about the stock market and another bizarrely manic-sounding one about affordability. The rants only underscored how disconnected he is from the reality of voters’ economic experiences. We talked to New Republic deputy editor Jason Linkins, who’s been writing well about Trump’s corruption as a major political vulnerability. We discuss Trump’s growing mania, why these stories are uniquely difficult for Republicans to defend, and why Americans’ experience of the economy poses a potentially unsolvable political problem for the GOP.  Looking for More from the DSR Network? 05-26-26 Part One - Left In The Nuclear Dust

In part one of Red Eye Radio with Gary McNamara and Eric Harley, President Trump claimed Monday that Iran’s enriched uranium, or "nuclear dust", will either be surrendered to the U.S. or destroyed as the two countries continue working toward a potential peace deal. His comments came after an earlier post in which he said countries negotiating for peace should join the Abraham Accords. Over Memorial Day weekend Trump announced that a deal with Iran — which would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz — had been “largely” negotiated. Also rumors abound that Vice President JD Vance will NOT run for President in 2028, audio from a Ken Paxton political ad exposing a clearly delusional James Talarico making un-Godly statements, that "spawned" a hilarious discussion about alien sex movies, audio from a podcast supporting mixed gender sports, the latest from The Babylon Bee and Kamala in 2028? Lawfare Daily: How the World Sees Trump’s America with Eve Fairbanks and Madeleine Schwartz

On today’s episode, Lawfare Managing Editor Tyler McBrien sits down with Eve Fairbanks, a writer and journalist based in Johannesburg, South Africa, and Madeleine Schwartz, founder and editor-in-chief of The Dial, a magazine of international writing, to discuss The Dial’s forthcoming book, “How We See it: The World Looks at America in the Age of Trump” (out June 9 from The New Press). They speak about several essays in the collection, which is made up of contributions by journalists from around the world who probe their home countries’ complex relationships with the United States—relationships made even more complex under the current administration. They also dive deep on Fairbanks’s essay on the South African perspective. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. How SCOTUS is Waging Electoral Warfare

Kate and Leah break down the Supreme Court’s extension of a stay allowing for continued mail-order access to mifepristone, from the Court’s unconscionable failure to meet its own arbitrary deadline to the unhinged dissents from Justices Thomas and Alito. They also cover last week’s other legal news before speaking with Ari Berman, national voting rights correspondent for Mother Jones, about the devastating fallout from the Court’s ruling in the Voting Rights Act case, Louisiana v. Should We Cherish the Ultra-Wealthy? (a.k.a. ‘The Cornfield’)

A certain kind of wealthy American has been griping out loud lately — about taxes, about progressive cities, about how unappreciated they are for the jobs they create, the stuff they buy, and the tips they hand out. A narrative is coalescing around them too: that the top 10% of earners now do so much of the spending, the U.S. economy relies on them. But an economy that depends so much on the people at the top isn't the healthy one the country deserves — it’s just wearing a nice suit.Chapters: 00:00:56 Announcements: Q&A episode questions wanted 00:01:18 Retcon: The 86 debate; FDR's full "calamity howling executives" quote 00:05:32 Terms & Conditions: Wealth Effect and Zugzwang 00:09:26 Big Pilcrow: Should we cherish the ultra-wealthy?00:36:41 Executive Orders: Retire "mummies"; union credits on red carpets 00:39:34 Spiritual Sponsors: Mellow Cello podcast; enormous floral arrangementsFurther Reading Moody's claim that the top 10% of earners now drive nearly half of consumer spending in the WSJ:https://www.wsj.com/economy/consumers/us-economy-strength-rich-spending-2c34a571 The Minneapolis Fed on what the underlying data actually shows. https://www.minneapolisfed.org/article/2026/have-us-consumers-gone-k-shaped-a-review-of-the-data Wealthy part-time New Yorkers reacting to a proposed pied-à-terre tax in the Financial Times. https://www.ft.com/content/3283eaab-e9cf-41e6-a028-5a02fb6f4615 The Wall Street Journal on second-home taxes spreading from New York City to other states, including the San Diego homeowner who'd like to be cherished. https://www.wsj.com/real-estate/taxes-on-second-homes-are-springing-up-across-america-93a64448 Full reading list at https://optimisteconomy.substack.com Donate to Optimist Economy: https://optimisteconomy.com Video-curious? NTK: A Different (Smarter) Perspective on China

There was a shifting power dynamic during Donald Trump’s recent trip to China. Of course, this administration has been fraught with a foreign policy strategy (or lack thereof) that has only come back to bite the US. What does this meeting with Xi Jinping tell us? And how should the US approach China on the global stage? China expert Jessica Chen Weiss joins David Rothkopf to discuss the state of US-China relations, the future of Taiwan, and why the US might not be viewing China the way that they should. Listen here.
