This episode is brought to you by Vivo Life! Use our code 'chickpeeps10' to get 10% off your order at vivolife.com! This week, Evy speaks to full time activist and animal rights speaker, Joey Carbstrong, about his direct, no-nonsense style of activism. Joey talks about how his early life as part of a gang influenced his bold and confrontational approach to speaking up for the voiceless, and how he remains unperturbed by criticism when he focuses on his core mission of achieving animal liberation. Also on this episode... Joey recounts the time in his life as a gang member, and how a particularly depressing stint in prison prompted a total lifestyle overhaul, and eventually his vegan awakening. How Joey left his gang and found his calling in animal rights activism. How one-on-one street activism can have the greatest impact as an activist. 'The people who say animals are killed humanely, they haven't ever witnessed what happens inside a slaughterhouse. They're talking merely off of their indoctrination and what they're told.' Joey talks about his experiences in slaughterhouses as being some of 'the most horrific experiences' of his life. His mindset for dealing with the verbal and online abuse that comes with being a confrontational activist. Joey explains how to avoid ever being 'stumped' by an anti-vegan argument in a debate. How to focus and conserve one's energy for activism: 'I don't let anyone get inside my head to try to make me feel guilty for standing up for animals, no matter who it is.' What to say to people who accuse vegans of caring more about animals than humans. Do hardcore vegan activists want people working in the animal agricultural industry to go out of business, or evolve with the plant based food system? Joey explains how he takes a more forceful approach and how Gary Yourofsky's direct speeches about animal abuse was what he needed to hear to go vegan. 'People need to be held accountable for their contribution to something that is horrific.' Robbie and Evy talk about the c-word and how we can discuss the original source of the virus, as being the consumption of wild animals, without shaming and angering people. As the world continues to battle a global pandemic that originated from contact with a wild animal, it seems timely to contemplate humanity's relationship to wild animals. So this week on Chickeeps, Evy speaks to longtime animal welfare activist and vegan, Katie Tostevin-Hobbs of World Animal Protection about what it means to create safe and respectful boundaries between people and wild animals. We discuss why it's unethical to use animals in entertainment, what wild animals really shouldn't be kept as pets, and also why some animal welfare organisations choose not to take a publicly vegan stance. Seeing the problem from all perspectives: Katie explains how the mahouts and exployees of elephant riding companies are victims to the system too, and what World Animal Protection do to help them find a new livelihood. How to open a dialogue with people who work in the animals in entertainment sector. What to do when you see a friend posting about swimming with dolphins? Katie explains the Promise4Wildlife and how important it is to shift public perception of wild animals in entertainment. This episode is brought to you by Vivo Life! Use our code 'chickpeeps10' to get 10% off your order at vivolife.com! This week on ChickPeeps, Evy speaks to Dr.Melanie Joy, PhD., about managing relational conflict between vegans and non vegans, and the social conditioning that makes the majority of society resistant to embracing veganism. A harvard educated psychologist, international speaker and author, Melanie has long been exploring the question of what makes a person ready to learn about veganism, and this episode she speaks about the importance of vegan allies in this movement, how vegans activists can suffer from secondary traumatic stress disorder, and the self care practices that are essential to being a lifelong activist. Also on this episode... Dr.Joy discusses the idea of being 'ready' for veganism and encourages vegan activists to focus their efforts on the 'low hanging fruit'. The perspective shift that happens when you go vegan - 'You don't see different things, you see the same things differently.' The balance between being extremely sensitised to the plight of animals and being measured and relatable as an activist. 'When you look at the major problems of the world, these are not problems that exist because people are too sensitive; they exist because people aren't sensitive enough.' Moral perfectionism - Melanie discusses what she sees as the shadow side of being a conscientious person, and why it sets the movement back. Why self care is fundamentally important to being an effective activist. Is bearing witness to animal slaughter a moral obligation for activists? 'The animals don't need a movement of walking trauma survivors. The animals need a movement of healthy, self-connected, resilient individuals who are not going to burn out and who are going to be able to be their advocates for the long haul.' What is Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder and how it materialises in vegans. What is carnism? Has 'carnist' become a pejorative used to describe meat-eaters in vegan circles?  What is a vegan ally and how we can ask our loved ones to be that for us. The importance of relational literacy in the vegan movement. What can vegans do better to communicate our message? 'Vegan activists are doing an amazing job.' Dr.Melanie Joy encourages us all to pause and acknowledge the progress we've made! 'Give yourself permission to love non vegans even if you don't love what they do.' How does working with the oppressors of animals help the vegan movement? Leah Garcés, president of Mercy For Animals and author of Grilled, has made it her life's mission to advocate for animal rights by crossing enemy lines and working with the world's largest food corporations to change the system. In this episode she speaks to Tylor and Evy about her dedication to protecting animals from a young age, how meeting a factory farmer radically altered her outlook and approach to activism and how she navigates relationships with the people killing the animals she's trying to save. Also on this episode... Leah shares how the ducks in her backyard awakened her urge to protect animals. How Leah's dream of being a vet evolved when she realised she wanted to tackle the very root of animal suffering. 'Once I discovered that there was this world where you could advocate for farmed animals, and that could be a job, I never stopped advocating for animals, it was my professional job from day 1'. How having her first child inspired Leah to deeply consider her work and life's purpose. Leah talks about the initial inner conflict of being a vegan working in a welfare space, and how she reconciled herself with fighting for animal welfare. 'Conversations and empathy do not equal endorsement.' We talk about the fact that many vegans see working with people in animal agriculture as a betrayal of one's vegan values. Leah explains how her unique friendship with farmer, Craig Watts, radically shifted her approach to animal rights advocacy. How farmers become trapped as 'indentured servants' in the factory farming system 'Hate the oppression, not the oppressor,' Leah explains the Martin Luther King philosophy that inspires her activism. If farmers are not the enemy, then who is? How Leah built a rapport with and earned the trust of farmers in the first place. The role of protesting in animal welfare activism and when is the right time to stage a protest. MFA's Transfarmation project Leah talks about being a vegan mom and how much of her work she chooses to share with her children.  Leah weighs in on whether or not a fully vegan future is plausible.             Links: Buy Leah's book, Grilled: Turning Adversaries into Allies to Change the Chicken Industry.
