JESS MEGAN • surviving grief, addiction and social media #657

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by model, activist and general whirlwind of greatness JESS MEGAN! A deluxe edition of the podcast this week as Pip catches up with Jess, which as you will bear witness to, is no average catch up. While they worked together on the 'Dark Summer' Speech Development merch shoot back in 2016, which seems like mere months ago, that was an entire decade ago it turns out. And as with life in general, it also turns out that an almost insurmountable itinerary can intervene. In Jess's case, without treading on any of what you're about to hear, there's been an immense amount of grief, varying degrees of addiction, depression, and in case you need any sensitivity warnings, there is frank discussion of suicide - so please know that before you begin this episode. Of course, among the heavier elements of the conversation, a huge amount of light enters - Jess and Pip are lovely people and you're in safe hands, as hopefully you'll feel aware of by now. There's a lovely balance of the fun and the far more serious, including a lot of fascinating chat regarding social media and the like. But importantly, even if this situation doesn't mirror one of your own, there will likely be familiar moments or perhaps some which might be of help for others going through it. However you meet it, you'll emerge at the end in a different spot, and hopefully have found a glorious new friend in the bargain. A valuable, intimate but ultimately incredibly powerful conversation right here folks. PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting nature JESS IG PIP AT PRINCE CHARLES CINEMA! FEARNE COTTON (Happy Place / Top Of The Pops) • Friday Rewind

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Fearne Cotton, originally episode 295 from 2019-10-30. Original writeup below: This is the mirror side of a two podcast deal the two of them struck up, where Pip appeared on her ‘Happy Place’ podcast, so as you’ll witness, the driver is often interchangeable, but it’s all perfect as they get on just grand. Maybe it’s because they were born a month apart and have the same cultural touchstones - WHO KNOWS! Whatever the case, it’s a breeze of a podcast which touches on so much including a sentence which features Hanson and Led Zeppelin in the same breath (in fact I think it could be called an “Mmm Bop-cast” but that’s of no consequence), her intro into different kinds of music, being mates with Sarah Cawood and how she eventually got into gig going through her, Coldplay haters, the power of music shared on a mass scale, cathartic crying sessions, early days of her presenting on TV and growing up in front of the camera, presenting the Disney Club, still being treated as a kid in adult life, the old fashioned kid poop story which serves as a grounding device, how being a cool parent isn’t possible, her book ‘Happy’, losing her sense of self in her 20’s and regaining it later, social media, podcast therapy, changing one’s self in the midst of crisis and her work with CoppaFeel. But of course, SO much more. Lovely stuff from start to end. ENJOY! emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Brett Goldstein and Jon Drever, originally episode 62 from 2015-10-07. This is a very early days episode right here, the chasm of time made only wider when you consider the career arcs of those involved in the time intervening... Jon is one of the OGs of production company Grain Media, the home of the wonderful Superbob (made by he and Brett), who has now gone on to focus on producing comedy and has been more solo since 2018 or so. Brett has always been doing comedy / writing / film, and since the huge success of Superbob has gone onto find the combination to the universe by way of Ted Lasso, Shrinking, All Of You, and indeed the (some might say) perfectly edited podcast Films To Be Buried With. Here is a snapshot of - at time of this Rewind - over a decade ago, which is such an interesting position from which to view this point in time. Enjoy, and catch all of their furture work too of course. Christmas Drinks w/Musa Okwonga & Polarbear • Part 2 of 2 #650

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by friends of the podcast and friends in life MUSA OKWONGA and POLARBEAR! Part 2 of 2! Otherwise known as the 'elevated' Drunkcast with 100% less rowdiness and very little if any drunkenness! So an entirely respectful affair all in all (shoutouts and love of course to Chris and Stu as always). It's a rare occasion for this formation to come together too, as Musa is an incredibly busy writer/performer/podcaster, and Polar is perpetually busy with the words and the page. What happens though is a beautifully cordial, jovial, inspiring and really warm catchup between folks who have a lot of love for each other but a love which radiates outwards to us too. You'll notice it and feel it. And while tough topics come up - not least involving where Musa lives and the environment cooking there - it is all met with that said outward gaze and a communal outlook. A perfect listen not only for this time of year, but for this time in the world. A lush mix of local and global happening throughout - the small acts of kindness which spread out, that kind of vibe. Oh and on the subject of vibes - let's all just crown Polar the Vibemaster General, while we're at it. ENJOY! Merry festivetimes to all who get down as such - but as always lots of love to all of you listening XX PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting nature MUSA OKWONGA POLARBEAR SPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTORE PIP TWITCH • (music stuff) PIP INSTAGRAM PIP TWITTER PIP PATREON PIP IMDB POD BIBLE Hosted on Acast. WILL POULTER (Midsommar / Detroit / The Bear) • Friday Rewind

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we catch up with Will Poulter, originally episode 167 from 2017-10-17. Original writeup below: In the midst of his current promo run for Kathryn Bigelow's 'Detroit', Will takes time to sit down with Pip for a long overdue chat covering - as you will have come to expect from the DPP - a crazy large number of bases... From the issues raised in portraying a violently racist policeman in 'Detroit' (and the poignancy of the film itself), a powerful back and forth is triggered with Pip and Will, which is the beauty of films like this and how an open discussion can be had which leads into so much more besides - race, politics, society, it's all here. On top of that, you'll hear his tale from the very early days back in 'School Of Comedy' and how his young foot in the acting world's door gave him the necessary inspiration for a full on career, Will drops some gems from his unique perspective on his experience with acting and his ascent from those younger days right up to 'Son Of Rambow', 'The Maze Runner' and 'The Revenant', the latter of which had him up alongside Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Hardy no less. A rich and diverse filmography right there, which has in many ways freed him from his somewhat reductive nickname of 'that Weird Eyebrow Actor'. Get yourself involved, it's a goodie and as interesting as it is entertaining. DEFUND THE POLICE: Discussed • Friday Rewind

emocleW, emocleW, emocleW to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This is your bonus FRIDAY REWIND episode! Today, we look back at the Defund The Police two-part discussion, originally episode 330 from 2020-06-19. Original writeup below: A very timely and hugely informative one for you this week, as Pip is joined by two guests, one after the other. The first is Alex S. Vitale (professor of sociology at Brooklyn College, US), followed by Dr Adam Elliott-Cooper (University Of Greenwich, humanities and social science department). With everything we’ve seen over the last month in most recent history, one sentiment and statement that’s been gaining traction is “Defund The Police”. On face value and without any further research or intrigue, this could come across in an entirely different way than it is supposed to. Pip did a good amount of digging, and after being passed along to appropriate potential guests, meetings were set up and he arrived at two people who are well versed and well equiped to speak on the issue. In the interest of balance, he speaks to Alex from the US, where the issue is very pertinent and pressing and also has very different implications for society there, and also Adam from the UK, who goes into what this means for the UK and the nuances involved. It’s a complex matter for sure, but along with the accompanying links from Pip to break down what’s been talked about, and a comprehensive conclusion, you’ll hopefully be way more up on the subject than you might have been previously, and have a good understanding on what it means to say ‘defund the police’. Be informed, share, and enjoy. Dissecting Disfluency (w/ Cherry Burns) #641

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip discusses the broad topic of disfluency with journalist CHERRY BURNS! Those of you familiar with Pip's Twitch channel and the community within might well be familiar with Cherry, but if not, all is well as here is your formal introduction! Although their role is two-fold, as guest and interviewer, with Pip as the subject. Today (at time of episode publishing) is Wednesday 22nd October, which is International Stammering Awareness Day. With Pip being a person with a stammer as well as a patron of the organisation Stamma, it would be a missed opportunity to celebrate the event and that is exactly what's going down today! This is a chance for those of you who stammer, as well as those of you who do not, to listen in on a conversation covering a vast amount of points and topics within the greater world of stammering that you might not usually hear. It's a wonderful chance to gain some insight into not only what it is, but how it can come into play in day to day life, the issues that might otherwise go unseen or unheard, but also the added compensatory factors that can kick in as a result. Something that comes up in the chat is about how stammering is not the problem, it's how the world meets the stammer that is the problem, which is a really interesting swing on it all. So please, listen and enjoy, it's a really fun episode and definitely one we can all gain something from, and ultimately celebrate. Shouts to Cherry too for being an awesome guest interviewer! 9. Grandmaster Flash: further adventures on the wheels of steel #634

Grandmaster Flash: further adventures on the wheels of steel #634

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by Hip Hop legend GRANDMASTER FLASH! Y'say... Y'say... Y'say / y'say / y'say (etc) and if you're not carrying that scratch sentence on in your head you have some SERIOUS homework to do. We flashback to the 20-teens to the era of the Beatdown radio show, Pip's XFM show which centred around (but not exclusively) rap and Hip Hop music. Pip had some stone cold legends guesting on there, as you will have heard on some previous flashback episodes, but THIS flashback is the Grandmaster Flashback of all of em. Flash has retained the pure enthusiasm and excitement you would hope for in a DJ and crate digging legend, and enthusiasm which radiates easily and - speaking as a DJ myself (this is producer Buddy typing) - makes me want to just grab an armful of records and hop on the turntables. It's just that pure fun mixed with discovery but entirely fueled by funk and straight up musical greatness. Although as you'll hear, Flash does speak like a true old skool DJ skipping through the 'wack parts' and heading straight to the break. You have to imagine how insanely brilliant that feeling must have been back then, when people just didn't know what these breaks and now classics were, and he even goes into the old trick of hot-watering the labels off and replacing em with dud labels to throw other DJs off the scent. It's hard to retain that mystery these days but back then it was just so different. Anyway - a beautiful snapshot of a truly crucial time in Hip Hop, a part of the genesis of what we know it as now. Whether you like it or acknowledge it or not, this is where it started. Lesson's started, yer late!
