A total gem of an episode here, whether you are a heavyweight devotee of Mark's film output or if this is the first time you're hearing about him. Mark's got many years in the game, and in an era where almost every single thing feels digital, his approach to film making is almost as aesthetically radical as it comes - using all analogue gear, and a truly unique attitude to post-sync sound too. This chat gets into many eras and processes, including the origins of Bait (2019) which stem back to decades ago, how to tour a film, making films for an audience of self, representing the working class in an honourable way, Cornwall stereotypes, falling in love with the film making process again via Super8 cameras, the music making process and how said sync work happens. Genuine good stuff for the films heads (and, as said, those not familiar - everyone will get something from this). Oh and just TRY not to incorporate the Cornish Affirmative into you daily parlance. We are still in lockdown (lockdown has been lifted), and while we’re all going in to work (no going into work) and staying alert (SO much more alert than usual), Pip decided to round up a willing crew for some further drunk antics by way of the second ISOLATION DRUNKCAST! This one right here is the Back To The Future / Godfather / Karate Kid of podcasts. A three parter of crazy huge proportions, featuring not only Pip and the usual Hardcore Listing crew Stu and Chris, but also the truly great comedians / Off Menu duo of JAMES ACASTER and ED GAMBLE! A heavy affair combining all manner of drink combos, raised voices and flaring tempers all conducted over zoom through five mini computer screens. Although their role is two-fold, as guest and interviewer, with Pip as the subject. Today (at time of episode publishing) is Wednesday 22nd October, which is International Stammering Awareness Day. With Pip being a person with a stammer as well as a patron of the organisation Stamma, it would be a missed opportunity to celebrate the event and that is exactly what's going down today! This is a chance for those of you who stammer, as well as those of you who do not, to listen in on a conversation covering a vast amount of points and topics within the greater world of stammering that you might not usually hear. It's a wonderful chance to gain some insight into not only what it is, but how it can come into play in day to day life, the issues that might otherwise go unseen or unheard, but also the added compensatory factors that can kick in as a result. Something that comes up in the chat is about how stammering is not the problem, it's how the world meets the stammer that is the problem, which is a really interesting swing on it all. With past success and proven track record, turns out the hands it's in are very safe indeed, but nevertheless it is fascinating to hear how the whole thing is assembled and taken from writing room to screen. As you would expect, it takes a long time and there are no shortcuts, but what a pleasure in a time when so many shortcuts are made for us and the path is usually all about speed and quick results. This is most definitely an episode for the appreciators of the craft of poetry, but not ONLY that - it's more like a demonstration of why everything else around it matters so much, and how poetry is achieved by plugging into community, society, and life its very self. It's fascinating hearing about Aja's New York upbringing, and how exposure to the urban envrionment and the people within it helped cultivate the person she would grow into - Aja really does live and embody the life of a creator, and the self-proclaimed status of 'surrealist blues poet' is perfect indeed. Thankfully creation and art and music are not in short supply, no matter what some of the highers might want us to think, and Joe is proof of that. Highly regarded rappers and musicians coming together in ways that even us fans would be refreshingly surprised by. Truly it hasn't been an easy journey, with various dependancies and relapses on the table, but the 2026 Iain is congniscant of how these situations came into play and is able to trace the path. But there have been some awesome stops on the journey too, in finding love via a long term working relationship, and navigating an incredibly heavy and tense live radio situation resulting in a life-saving triangulation of listeners.
