Guy Ritchie directed it, and it sounded like a very cool and very unique environment to be a part of...     Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip! This week Pip is joined by Mystery Jets OG BLAINE HARRISON! Mystery Jets are a total indie band sureshot, who are currently in the 20th anniversary year of their debut 'Making Dens' debut. They've been total crowdpleasers since the first days, rocking any venue they've graced (including Banquet Records to name one, who get flowers in perpetuity). Back then it was a VERY different time, and a near-unrecognizable media terrain in which many bands were assigned a persona, or vibe, or aura by the music press. The Jets were not immune to this and were often saddled with this and that from various publications, but thankfully forged ahead, and always retained pure love from their fanbase. Pip catches up with original member Blaine, who is such an easy breezy chat subject and has his own questions here and there too (Jets and Pip share 20th anniversary celebrations this year!). It was a really vibrant era back in 2006, but it's so valuable to see a successful band who are still rocking it with no loss of passion or ambition. A really fascinating episode which, as always, will appeal whether you're a Jets-head or you've never heard of 'em. ENJOY! Nor was it disinterest. Karl was looking through the world through a different prism, and certainly a prism of which we should all have a go at experiencing. It’s really nice hearing him get around ideas at leisure and with Pip (and us) as a sounding board, and definitely a really cool way of sharing the worldview of one of the more fascinating characters in the cast of podcasts, series and media in general. The two get into it all, from the origins of podcasting (kind of beginning with the Gervais one of course), to his thoughts on the promo run, to confidence, last minute tinkering, being a fan of real life and the fine line between that and comedy, ponderings on having children, the XFM days, being rubbed the wrong way by Ricky, his genuine curiosity, working on Derek, people being over familiar and a charming spider story to round it off. This is most definitely an episode for the appreciators of the craft of poetry, but not ONLY that - it's more like a demonstration of why everything else around it matters so much, and how poetry is achieved by plugging into community, society, and life its very self. It's fascinating hearing about Aja's New York upbringing, and how exposure to the urban envrionment and the people within it helped cultivate the person she would grow into - Aja really does live and embody the life of a creator, and the self-proclaimed status of 'surrealist blues poet' is perfect indeed. You'll definitely get a huge amount from the chat if you yourself are involved in words, but if you're in the least bit creative and find that side of your life as crucial as air and water, you'll get so much from the chat. A genuine treat for anyone in the least bit invested in all things Game Of Thrones and House Of The Dragon lore. Pip catches up with someone who is dealing with one of the tasks in recent times, which is showrunning a series with much expectation on its head. With past success and proven track record, turns out the hands it's in are very safe indeed, but nevertheless it is fascinating to hear how the whole thing is assembled and taken from writing room to screen. As you would expect, it takes a long time and there are no shortcuts, but what a pleasure in a time when so many shortcuts are made for us and the path is usually all about speed and quick results. So much goodness for the fans and appreciators in here, and those who are yet to begin their quest (god bless you!). Pip is a confirmed fan of course, and caught up with them on a very swift whirlwind run in London to talk all things film, from the time taken to get to this stage with the film, seeing the effect of it on an audience (especially comedically), the casting of Adam Sandler, the importance of voices, the use of extras in a far more involved sense, British acting and the realism of it, casting real people, working with musicians, using New York as a character, their intense focus on character even down to auditioning actors for one line appearances, and the sonic world of a film including the ‘Atmos’ mix which they go into.
