    #406 Responding to the Backlash: Grifting, Manipulation & Biblical Forgiveness

    After my recent appearance on Alex Clark’s Culture Apothecary, the backlash came fast. Candace Owens featured clips from our conversation on her show, accusations of “Christian grifting” started flying, and a discussion about biblical forgiveness sparked a firestorm of its own. In this episode, I’m responding—not to every insult or comment, but to some of the bigger issues underneath the controversy. What does the Bible actually mean by forgiveness? Does forgiveness require repentance? What should Christians make of Jesus’ words, “Father, forgive them”? And how do we distinguish biblical forgiveness from simply releasing bitterness or resentment? I also take a closer look at what I call “confident mocking”—when ridicule, accusations about motives, and sheer certainty can masquerade as an argument. We’ll talk about conspiracy culture, intuition versus objective truth, the burden of proof, and why “asking questions” doesn’t automatically make a claim reasonable or true. Most importantly, how can Christians practice real discernment without becoming mockers ourselves? Finally, I respond to a couple of questions from recent episodes about deconstruction, including the relationship between faith in Christ and faith in Scripture—and why our ultimate foundation must be the person and authority of Jesus Christ. At the end of the day, this isn’t about winning an internet fight. It’s about truth, humility, discernment, and keeping the gospel of Jesus Christ at the center of everything.     In Part 1 of my conversation with Matt Schmidt, we explored his argument that many deconstruction stories reveal a deeper problem: faith that was ultimately built on something other than the person and authority of Jesus Christ. In Part 2, we put that thesis to the test by watching and analyzing real deconstruction stories posted online. We hear from former Christians whose faith unraveled over questions about morality, the Word of Faith movement, biblical criticism, the Epic of Gilgamesh, the nature of faith, and more. With each story, we ask four important questions: What was their faith originally built on? What caused the first crack? What replaced that foundation? And was Jesus himself ever really the problem?     For the first time, John and Korey Cooper of the Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum rock band Skillet are breaking their silence about the church abuse that devastated their family and turned their community against them. For years, the Coopers were deeply embedded in Korey’s lifelong church, never realizing that its leadership embraced beliefs and practices associated with the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR).     Few topics generate more emotional pushback among Christians than forgiveness. Are Christians required to forgive everyone—even when the person who hurt them refuses to repent? And if forgiveness is conditional, does that contradict Jesus’ command to forgive? In this episode, I sit down again with Teasi Cannon, author of Counterfeit Forgiveness: How a Modern Myth Betrays Victims, Protects Abusers, and Corrupts the Gospel, to respond to the biggest objections to the conditional view of biblical forgiveness. We tackle passages like Mark 11:25 and Jesus’ prayer from the cross, “Father, forgive them,” and ask whether requiring repentance makes forgiveness transactional. We also discuss how to recognize genuine repentance and what happens when an offender never repents, is unavailable, has died, or is unsafe. Most importantly, we address the concern at the heart of this debate: Does conditional forgiveness leave victims trapped in bitterness or unable to heal? Teasi explains why rejecting therapeutic forgiveness does not mean holding onto bitterness, refusing to love your enemies, or abandoning healing—and why forgiveness, reconciliation, restoration, justice, and trust need to be understood as distinct biblical categories.
