REWIND Vulnerable EP04: Actress Alyson Stoner Gets Vulnerable

Vulnerable Rewind: *Content Warning* In this episode, Alyson Stoner and I discuss the realities of child labor and the exposure child actors experience. We do discuss different traumas we experienced. It may be triggering, and we encourage you all to take care of yourself.  Today on Vulnerable, I sit down with the incomparable multi-disciplinary artist in my most vulnerable conversation to date: actress, singer, dancer Alyson Stoner. Alyson and I share our experiences of growing up as child actors. As adults, we have been working hard to unpack it all and advocate for current and future child actors. This episode isn’t a salacious conversation, rather a sobering insight behind the curtain of fame. Alyson’s passion for advocacy has prompted her to work with a team of experts to create modules that educate and protect child actors.  Beyond being a multi-disciplinary artist, published author, and global speaker, Alyson and I discuss how she Co-Founded Movement Genius, a digital platform using movement to improve mental and emotional health. Alyson and the Movement Genius team are incredibly generous and offer Vulnerable listeners 30 Day Free Trial of Movement Genius. On top of acting in iconic movies and tv shows, he is a very talented rapper and musician, streetwear clothing designer, gamer, influencer, and also host! Today Khleo spends his time creating content about the things he loves and is cultivating a community motivated to pursue their passions. Throughout this conversation with Khleo, I was in awe of Khleo’s groundedness and confidence. He knows who he is, what his talents are, and isn’t afraid to experiment with new ways to highlight his passions. He shares why he decided to stop producing music, how his family has kept him grounded, how he took months of studying Twitch before he launched his own channel and so much more. REWIND Vulnerable EP09: Halloweentown Actress Kimberly J. Brown Gets Vulnerable

VULNERABLE REWIND: Today on Vulnerable, I sit down with Kimberly J. Brown. Kimberly is an actress who started her career at just five years old. We grew up together in the industry, crossing paths at commercial auditions, on Broadway, and later in California during our Disney Channel days. So it was great to catch up with my friend! In this episode, Kimberly and I reflect on our experiences in NYC being child actors. Kimberly shares what it was like to be Young Cosette in Les Miserables and how she juggled being on Broadway and a regular on Guiding Light at the same time.  We also talk about being the first Disney Channel “stars” and what it was like to usher a new era for the Disney Channel in terms of entertainment that adults and kids today still enjoy! Kimberly shared how she navigated her education while acting and why she decided to go to college and study something entirely outside of “the arts.” Kimberly’s deep wisdom from growing up in the industry, has allowed her to really own her creative endeavors, from continuing her acting, to writing and producing sketches on her YouTube and social channels, to selling unique graphic tees on her Etsy shop, to traveling and interacting with fans at Cons. Kimberly has crafted a life she enjoys. She truly loves that her work can bring someone joy. PLUS, we even learn how unexpected love came into her life when she reconnected with her Halloweentown co-star. This episode highlights how you can design a life you love that will uplift all the talents that make you, you!  You can follow Kimberly @OfficialKJB on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. If you are a fan of custom artwork, graphic tees, and more, check out Kimberly’s Etsy shop CraftilyCreative. Response to QUIET ON SET: THE DARK SIDE OF KIDS TV

EXCLUSIVE REACTIONS: Mayim, Jenna von Oy, and Christy Carlson Romano dive deep into the explosive QUIET ON SET documentary, from the heartbreaking abuse exposed by some of their peers, to their own firsthand accounts of the pressures they faced as child actors.   Mayim, Christy, and Jenna reflect on how the model for kids’ tv made child actors particularly vulnerable, the dangers of children working in the high pressure entertainment industry, the trauma-bonding nature watching the doc has had for their peer community, whether the system can truly be reformed, and ways to effectively pivot the conversation from sensationalistic gossip to promoting real change in the industry.   Christy reveals why she has currently chosen NOT to watch the documentary, breaks down her reservations about the exploitative nature of "trauma tourists," and explains more about the important advocacy work organizations like the Looking Ahead program (@alifeinthearts) are doing to connect child actors and their families with essential resources.   THEY ALSO DISCUSS:  - The dangers of dangling fame in front of child actors - The role parents have to play, even if a studio tries to remove them - The importance of teaching children to use their voices - The crucial need for female representation and trauma-informed care in the entertainment industry   This episode is a must-listen, from revealing the dark side of how the entertainment millions love was actually made, to the exploration of what we can all do to ensure the safety of children everywhere.    Learn more about the Looking Ahead program: http://give.actorsfund.org/site/Calendar?id=101701&view=Detail Learn more about the Coogan Law: https://www.sagaftra.org/membership-benefits/young-performers/coogan-law BialikBreakdown.com YouTube.com/mayimbialik Learn more about your ad choices. REWIND Vulnerable EP20: Jodie Sweetin From Full House Gets Vulnerable

VULNERABLE REWIND: Today my guest is actress, tv personality, podcaster, and activist - Jodie Sweetin. Jodie has been gracing our televisions since she was five, portraying the beloved Stephanie Tanner in Full House. In this episode, Jodie and I reflect on our individual journeys coming into our authentic selves. She shares her experience of being on Full House and how being sober has helped her grow as a human. She also explains being her authentic self has allowed her to flourish in podcasting, hosting, and participating on reality TV. Jodie is also an activist. Vulnerable EP43: Former Child Actor Lisa Jakub on Why She Quit the Business

Today on Vulnerable, I talk with Lisa Jakub. You may remember her from Mrs. Doubtire, Independence Day, and The Beautician and the Beast, to name a few. I had the pleasure of meeting her at 90's Con. In this episode, Lisa shares with me how she started acting as a child and the events that led up to her decision to ultimately quit the industry. She details the work she did to discover herself outside of performance and how she addressed her anxiety and depression. Today, Lisa has written two books, is the CEO and founder of two organizations. Blue Mala is a pay-what-you-can mental health community that offers yoga, meditation, and mindfulness practices. Mission Flexible is a non-profit which supports veterans through mindfulness retreats. Lisa is inspiring because she has built a life that she truly loves when before she didn't have the agency to do so. I hope this episode is encouraging to everyone to care for their mental health and seek community in the process. Follow Lisa @lisa.jakub on Instagram and @lisa_jakub on Twitter. 9. Vulnerable EP10: Wizards of Waverly Place Actress Jennifer Stone Gets Vulnerable

    05/10/2022

Vulnerable EP10: Wizards of Waverly Place Actress Jennifer Stone Gets Vulnerable

Today on Vulnerable, I sit down with actress and nurse Jennifer Stone. Jennifer began acting at age six, which led her on a journey where she became Harper Finkle on the Disney Channel Original Series Wizards of Waverly Place. In her early twenties, she was diagnosed with latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA). She took some time away from acting and went to school and studied nursing. She became a registered nurse in 2020 and joined the ER front lines during the pandemic. Brendan and I were excited to deep dive with Jennifer about how she balances her acting career with her nursing career.  In this episode, Jennifer reflects how acting has always been something she was passionate about from a young age. As an adult, she realized that although the art of acting is something she continues to love, she needed to spend time doing something that wasn’t just about her. She didn’t want to become the narcissistic and self-involved side of the industry she was exposed to as a child. Being a nurse has allowed her to continue pursuing acting while grounding herself in the real world. It was so interesting to talk to Jennifer about how acting has informed the way she taps into empathy while navigating the ER, how patients sometimes recognize her, and how she has survived working on the frontlines during the pandemic.  This episode highlights how it’s important to cultivate a resource that grounds you and supports your artistic expression. It doesn’t even have to be a career, it could be a mantra, an ethic, a community action, anything that guides you to be more fully you. You can follow Jennifer @jenniferstone on Instagram, Twitter, and @jenniferlstone on TikTok.  Follow me, Christy Carlson Romano on Instagram @thechristycarlsonromano and TikTok @christcarlsonromano, subscribe to my YouTube channel, and follow Brendan Rooney on  Instagram @thebrendanrooney and TikTok @brendanrooney.
