    74. Transitioning Back to School - How do we support our anxious kids?

    74. Transitioning Back to School - How do we support our anxious kids?

Lynda Dell is a Certified Early Childhood Educator who is writing a blog to support parents called "Resilient Families Thrive" (link below). Joining Lynda is Karen DeHaven, a licensed therapist, founding Director and Principal Clinician.

Lynda says that moms need to give love to themselves and recharge their batteries so they can “fill their cup” and be available for their children.
Karen suggests that mom and dad look inward to see how they are feeling so they can “take their own temperature” before addressing their children’s needs. If not, it is a set up for conflict and agony in the home. She has some strategies to use with parents so they can regulate and properly respond to their children to help answer their questions since there will be a lot of uncertainty.
Getting children to self-regulate is great too. Practicing strategies with them are important to do so when everything is going well so they can use the strategies when chaos ensues.
Lynda discusses the importance of modeling these strategies for your children to help them through the anxiety they are feeling.
Behavior is a “cry out” for something that is happening with children, so Karen is working on a booked called “COVID DAYS 911” to help parents deal with the anxiety their children are experiencing.

    73. Managing Life after Death - How do you parent through grief?

    73. Managing Life after Death - How do you parent through grief?

Dr. Ashley Wellman is a criminologist, children's author and mom who has a life story that took an unexpected turn. As she puts it,“I am a scholar who focuses on grief/trauma/loss particularly with sexual assault and homicide survivors, BUT it was this very work that helped me fight through my own traumatic/PTSD experience: the sudden death of my young husband”.
Ashley serves victims of homicide and sexual assault, but this podcast is not about her work with others.
In this episode, we cover some of the following questions:
What is the difference between pre and post trauma for you?
Who are you now because of your experiences?
What is it like the moment you knew you lost him?
What were the next 24 hours, the next week for you?
Talk about being vulnerable with Reghan.
After hearing Ashley’s story of transitioning to a “new normal” with her daughter, she talks about how others helped her through it since being on her own would be too difficult.
EMDR therapy helped Ashley with traumatic visions she had which were haunting her, and eventually she was able to “reshape” her images.
Ashley also took a creative leap away from academia and wrote a children’s book about seeking the special qualities in those who are deemed to be different.
Her children’s book is called: My Friend Fresno

    72. Natural Sweeteners - How safe are these & should we substitute our sugar source?

    72. Natural Sweeteners - How safe are these & should we substitute our sugar source?

Thom King is the Founder and CEO of Steviva and natural sugar alternatives,
Thom King, a self-proclaimed foodie and health nut, he founded Steviva as a way to effectively help combat metabolic disease and the “diabesity” (his self-coined term to refer to obesity + diabetes) epidemic in this country by offering clean-label sweetening systems to replace sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup.
Steviva Brands Inc. is one of the largest importers, manufacturers and distributors of clean-label sweetening systems and natural sweeteners. As a serial entrepreneur, he says, “you aren’t doing well unless you’re also doing some good”.
Thom is a food scientist and formulator who figured out that sucralose smells like chlorine and was amazed that humans are putting this into their body and it may disrupt your body’s biodome. Taking care of your gut health can help your whole body so this was important to Thom and his team to develop a natural sweetener that would work well with your body and not cause disruption or neurological effects to your body.
Thom talks about the “liquid” sugar (corn syrup) that is used in many of our products and its effect on fat storage in the body. When you eat too much fructose, it automatically gets stored as lipids around your organs and stomach which hinders our health.
We also discuss the difference between the Keto and Paleo diets and the benefits of each. Thom explains the importance of the liver which is able to metabolize fats into ketones, and the body makes a more energy source in the metabolic process.
There’s nothing better than keto for brain function, focus, concentration, etc. Keto is not a diet, it’s a lifestyle.
Overall, Thom believes it is the responsibility of individuals to make these substitutions as big business and the government won’t do it for us. As parents, I asked if his products were safe for kids, and he assured me that they have been FDA approved and safe for our children to use.
