Mother Katie has a bachelor degree in Religious Studies from the University of Kansas- Rock Chalk! And a Masters of Divinity from The Theological School of the University of the South in Sewanee TN, YSR! When Katie is not at church, she is spending time with her family-(husband, daughter and German Shepherd), hopefully in nature- hiking, camping, or glamping more like. She practices yoga and loves dancing to music with a sick beat. Mother Katie enjoys a good laugh, through watching funny tv, movies or stand up comedians, but the best is when you are surprised by the quick wit of the person you are talking to.  Relevant links… Book of Common Prayer online: www.bcponline.org  An Episcopal Dictionary: https://www.episcopalchurch.org/glossary/  To learn more about the Episcopal Diocese of West Missouri College and Young Adult Ministry click here To learn more about the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas Young Adult & Campus Ministry click here All Things…Episcopal podcast is a production of The Diocese of West Missouri and Diocese of Kansas in association with Resonate Media.  Music is provided by Blue Dot sessions Our opening theme is New Found Believers and our closing theme is After Sunrise

Heaven & Hell: No Easy Answers

In this episode… In this episode, Clare, Kelsey Phillips and Riley Brown dive into one of the oldest — and most misunderstood — topics in Christian theology: heaven and hell. Together, with Mtr. Kelly Demo, they unpack what the Episcopal Church teaches (and doesn’t teach) about the afterlife, judgment, salvation, and what it all means for how we live today.   About the Hosts The Rev. Clare Stern-Burbano (she/her) The Rev. Clare Stern-Burbano (she/her) is the curate for Campus Ministry at Kansas State University and the Associate for college, youth, and children’s ministry at a parish in Kansas City, MO and graduate from the Univ. of Dubuque Theological Seminary (MDiv.) and from Bishop Kemper School for Ministry (Anglican Studies). She hopes of one day becoming an Episcopal priest and is discerning in the Diocese of Kansas. Clare comes from an interfaith family and found a spiritual home in the Episcopal Church when she was nine years old.    Riley Brown (He/Him) Riley Brown is the Young Adult Missioner for the Diocese of West MO. He is passionate about making the Episcopal Church accessible to young people who, like himself, might not have grown up in the tradition. In other words, he feels his goal is to help make it all make sense to those who might not understand all the smells, bells, kneeling, and standing. Riley lives with his wife, Noah, and their two cats, Punchy and Teddy. He enjoys reading and playing games with his friends.      Guest:  The Rev. Kelly Demo (she/her) is the Associate Rector at St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church in Overland Park, Kansas. During her 29 years of ordained ministry much of Kelly's work has focused on both youth and their spiritual development, and matters of social justice and poverty. Outside the church Rev. Demo worked for ten years with international aid organizations. She created and published a Scripture based retreat for youth called Miqra which is used in many dioceses around the country. She is currently developing a curriculum that helps older teens discover their gifts and God-given passions so they might serve the Kingdom and has authored two books. Kelly is married to The Rev. Gar Demo. They have two grown children, a dog, and a cat she never knew she needed.   Relevant links: Suggestions and Comments for the Co-hosts? Bonus Episode: God’s Time ≠ Your Planner: Telling Liturgical Time

In this episode, Fr. Ryan Williams is joined by Mtr. Katherine Mansfield and they talk about how the church tells time, something that is very important in the Episcopal church and several denominations. We unpack: ●      Linear time vs. spiral time—yes, we’re getting a little philosophical●      Why Sundays aren’t just Sundays, and what it means to step out of Chronos and into Kairos ●      How vestments, candles, and colors aren’t just aesthetics—they’re time cues●      The full sweep of the liturgical year: from Advent anticipation to Pentecost fire to the long green stretch of Ordinary Time     Plus, we’ll explore how the liturgical calendar isn’t just for worship—it’s a way of life. It reshapes how we pray, how we wait, how we remember, and how we hope. Whether you’re a lifelong Episcopalian or just church-curious, this episode will help you see time differently—sacredly. About the Hosts The Rev. Clare Stern-Burbano (she/her) is a transitional deacon in the diocese of Kansas. She is the Curate for Campus Ministry at Kansas State Univ.  She graduated from the Univ. of Dubuque Theological Seminary (M.Div.) and Bishop Kemper School for Ministry (Anglican Studies). She hopes to one day become an Episcopal priest. Clare comes from an interfaith family and found a spiritual home in the Episcopal Church when she was nine years old.    The Rev. Ryan Williams  is the rector at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Joplin, MO.  In a previous life, he was an organic vegetable farmer and Baptist pastor.  In a previous life, he worked in student leadership and development at the university level.  He continues to have a passion for exploring the big questions of life and faith with people of all ages, but particularly students and young adults.  Ryan lives with his wife, Anna, their two kids, John Mark and Eleanor, and their dog, Scout.  When he isn’t taking Scout for runs or enjoying downtime with family, you can find Ryan rooting for the Milwaukee Bucks (basketball) and continually on the search for the perfect pizza dough recipe.      Guest Bio:  The Rev. In this episode, we dive into the winding path from Episcopal summer camps to college campus ministries with guests who’ve lived the journey. From first-time campers to seasoned student leaders, they share how early nudges (or outright shoves!) into camp life planted seeds of faith, community, and identity. We explore how those formative summer experiences shaped their spirituality and how stepping into college brought both challenges and opportunities for growth. Did Episcopal campus ministry help bridge the gap? How did community, ritual, and relationship carry over—or shift—in a university setting? ✨ Topics We Cover: First steps into Episcopal summer camp: choice or calling? How camp shaped early ideas of faith and belonging The transition from s’mores and songs to syllabi and stress Grounding faith through campus ministry in times of big questions Moments of challenge and transformation, both at camp and on campus Lifelong spiritual practices and habits that stuck around Community vibes: campfire circles vs. college chaplaincy couches Seeing yourself—and your calling—through the lens of these experiences Dreaming big for the future of camps and campus ministries (yes, snacks included!) Bonus Episode: Saved from What? Saved for What?: Grace and Salvation in the Episcopal Church

In this episode… In this episode, we’re breaking down two churchy words that carry a lot of weight: grace and salvation. What do they really mean—and more importantly, what do they mean for your actual, everyday life?  We explore these big ideas through the Episcopal lens, where grace is God's unconditional love, freely given, and salvation is about becoming whole—starting now, not just later. Joining us is Fr. Ryan Williams, one of the newer priests in the Diocese of West Missouri and a behind-the-scenes worker bee on this very podcast. We talk about his journey into the “wonderfully weird and holy chaos” of the Episcopal Church, plus what grace has looked like in his life and ministry. ✨ Questions we’re asking: What even is grace? Is salvation just about the afterlife—or something more? How can we unpack these words in a way that actually helps, not harms? Along the way, you'll hear stories, laughter, maybe a weird fact or two, and most importantly, a reminder that grace meets you exactly where you are.
