In this weeks episode of the Arc Junkies Podcast, I am sitting down with John Grdina and Ryan Eubank. John is an Author, Life Coach and Host of the John Grdina Classroom Podcast. Ryan Eubank is one of my good friends in mentors. If you’ve listened to the podcast, you’ve no doubt heard me talk about Ryan. He’s one of the main reasons that I am so passionate about welding education and motivated to share my knowledge with the next generation of welders.
 
In this episode, we talk about Ryan’s passion for teaching welding, his career as an educator, his recent trip to train welders in Africa, and how we are missing the mark when it comes to training welders. Ryan’s love and passion for helping others cannot be contained, you can hear it in his stories and in his voice.
 
John has been a longtime friend of Ryan’s and decided to write a book about Ryan’s welding Journey. Through this book, you will no doubt be able to identify with one or many of the chapters. Ryan is a life changer, and he’s been doing it for over two decades and has helped thousands of people find their inner strengths and gifts and has fostered these flames to help others reach their full potential.

This week’s guest is Michael Ewing. Mike is an Industrial Maintenance Technician out of Mississippi. Mike and his team do whatever it takes to keep plants all across the country up and running. They do a little bit of everything from welding, hydraulics, pneumatics, rigging, mechanical and anything else required to get the plants back up and running during failures or planned shut downs. I have an awesome guest for you today, Eddie Alverez Rocha is a welder turned mechanical engineer, who got back into welding and then became a CWI and is now working on his masters in welding engineering. Eddie has an awesome story of how he used welding to continuously grow in this vastly diversified trade. I’ve talked about the welding skills tree many times on this show and Eddie is climbing all the way to the top. Welcome to another on-site episode of Weld Wednesdays with AWS brought to you by the American Welding Society. This recording took place at the AWS Inspection Expo and Conference November 8th-10th in Austin Texas. This was by far my favorite event of this year because I got to network with so many legends in our Industry  like Dr. Rick Polanin, Bill Newel, Richard Holdren, Richard Campbell, Brent Boling and many more. The opening ceremony kicked off with the presentation of colors by the Distinguished Navy JROTC from Stony Point High School from Rock Round Texas followed by a keynote presentation by Gregg Boss Woolridge, the only commanding officer to have led the Blue Angels for three tours. Greg’s speech was all about teamwork and operating at peak efficiency. Right after the Keynote we broke out into 3 full days of back to back sessions and networking opportunities. Session topics included, What A CWI Needs to Know, Updates to current codes and standards, Intro to Mechanical Testing, Remote Inspections, Field Heat Treatment, Visual Inspection gauges and many more. It was a great event, if you didn’t have an opportunity to make the conference and you are an inspector or your planning on becoming an inspector, I highly recommend attending the IEC conference next year, it’s well worth it. While attending the conference, I had the opportunity to chat with my good friend and mentor Scott Witkowski, vice president of Republic Testing in Houston Texas, Scott and his team serve many clients in evaluating welders for certification and developing procedures. Scott is a wealth of knowledge and when I run into an issue that I can’t solve, he’s usually one of my first phone calls. In this episode we talk about some different resources and how to avoid some common pitfalls as a new inspector.

As many of you know, I had the amazing opportunity to go to CANWELD 2023 in Moncton New Brunswick with the Canadian Welding Bureau. This was a great event full of awesome speakers and presentations on pre and post heat, modes of metal transfer, automation and a slew of other topics. I had the esteemed opportunity to be invited up to the conference as a Keynote speaker on the last day of the conference. My buddy Max Ceron and I took to the stage in a between two ferns type of setup to discuss the current skills gap. While most welders will argue whether it’s a skills gap, or a wage gap (I personally think it's both) the fact of the matter is that it’s not just effecting the US, it’s also effecting Canada, as well as many parts of Europe. In this episode, Max and I discuss some of the things we as professionals, business owners and manufacturers can do to attract young talent into our industry. I’m sure you all have heard that it takes a village to raise a child, well it’s going to take an industry to bring in the next generation. There is not a one size fits all solution, but I give my two cents on how we can start to make a change.
